this paper describes an Erasmus Intensive Programme that used international collaboration as a novel pedagogical approach to teaching programming skills to first-year students in a blended learning context using a mixture of virtual environment and intensive teaching. the experience and outcomes of the Programme are evaluated from the viewpoints of the students and instructors and conclusions are drawn on the value and conduct of international student collaborations.

Fuzzy bi-objective preventive health care network design

Preventive health care is unlike health care for acute ailments, as people are less alert to their unknown medical problems. In order to motivate public and to attain desired participation levels for preventive programs, the attractiveness of the health care facility is a major concern. Health economics literature indicates that attractiveness of a facility is significantly influenced by proximity of the clients to it. Hence attractiveness is generally modelled as a function of distance. However, abundant empirical evidence suggests that other qualitative factors such as perceived quality, attractions nearby, amenities, etc. also influence attractiveness. therefore, a realistic measure should incorporate the vagueness in the concept of attractiveness to the model. the public policy makers should also maintain the equity among various neighborhoods, which should be considered as a second objective. Finally, even though the general tendency in the literature is to focus on health benefits, the cost effectiveness is still a factor that should be considered. In this paper, a fuzzy bi-objective model with budget constraints is developed. Later, by modelling the attractiveness by means of fuzzy triangular numbers and treating the budget constraint as a soft constraint, a modified (and more realistic) version of the model is introduced. Two solution methodologies, namely fuzzy goal programming and fuzzy chance constrained optimization are proposed as solutions. Both the original and the modified models are solved within the framework of a case study in Istanbul, Turkey. In the case study, the Microsoft Bing Map is utilized in order to determine more accurate distance measures among the nodes.

C language is a required course in information science. Students not only need to develop a strong interest in the subject, but also lay a good foundation for C language in studies. the discipline plays a very important role in professional courses, and therefore we need to provide a pleasant environment in which students can complete the fundamental C exercise. Pair programming reduces the pressure of solving a task because in pair programming two programmers tackle the challenge not just one programmer. Moreover, pair programming makes it easy to start a discussion of the subject even if two programmers have different levels because this is the fundamental C exercise. In this study, we design an experiment featuring the pair programming technique to enhance communication in the fundamental C exercise. the experimental results show that pair programming is an effective tool for enhancing communication in the fundamental C exercise.

In event-driven programming we can react to an event by binding methods to it as handlers, but such a handler binding in current event systems is explicit and requires explicit reason about the graph of event propagation even for straightforward cases. On the other hand, the handler binding in reactive programming is implicit and constructed through signals. Recent approaches to support either event-driven programming or reactive programming show the need of using both the two styles in a program. We propose an extension to expand event systems to support reactive programming by enabling the automation of handler bindings. With such an extension programmers can use events to cover both the implicit style in reactive programming and the explicit style in event-driven programming. We first describe the essentials of reactive programming, signals and signal assignments, in terms of events, handlers, and bindings, then point out the lack of automation in existing event systems. Unlike most research activities we expand event systems to support signals rather than port signals to event systems. In this paper we also show a prototype implementation and translation examples to evaluate the concept of automation.

Process modeling can play a central role in problem-based software development education with regard to qualifying students for the design and implementation of software applications for their specific needs without putting the focus on the technical part of coding. eXtreme Model Driven Design (XMDD) is a paradigm that focuses on the What (solving problems), rather than on the How (the technical skills of writing code). In this way it renders application design and implementation less daunting, thus accessible and more appealing to people that are either less technically skilled, or simply not interested at all in learning usual programming. In this paper we report on our experiences with the use of the jABC process modeling framework for teaching service-based software development in an XMDD fashion to students of different fields and on different levels of education.

Learning programming is a difficult task. Such difficulties depends on the chosen programming language and the exposure to the single programming concept. Mainstream programming languages such as Java, C and C++ are the most popular. But their innate complexity and the complexity of their tools risk to divert students' attention from the key point of learning appropriate programming techniques in general. Students that approach learning programming tend to focus on learning the programming language since it looks more practicable. the prominent issue lies within the core components of these languages: each programming language consists of many different features-such as control flow, variable definition, and so on-, each bound to a different group of constructs of the language. Due to their strict intertwining, the students are forced to keep up with a considerable quantity of unknown constructs and concepts since the beginning. this issue aggravates if we consider that many of these constructs are not meant to be fully explained until much further in the course, or worse, never. Also support tools, as IDEs, do not help the teacher in the compartmentalization of the programming concepts since they provide the students with code skeletons to fill without considering any language restriction. Teaching basic and advanced programming courses taught us that students tend to confuse the learning of programming with the learning of the programming language. the students try to master the programming language by learning any tiny little detail of it; in the hope that such details hide an easy solution to the proposed assignments. Evidently, this approach promotes the wrong belief that to learn programming means to learn the programming language instead of the correct thinking that programming is a matter of being able to solve problems independently of the used programming language. Mobile Crowd Sensing (MCS) refers to the sensing paradigm in which mobile users with sensing and computing devices are tasked to collect and contribute data in order to enable various applications. the initiators of mobile crowd sensing campaigns are suitable to be ones for creating MCS applications (MCSA). However, the relatively high requirements in software development skills become the barrier for initiators to create MCSA. In this paper, we propose a supporting framework for the initiators who lack of software development skills to build MCSA in a quick and simple way. It enables initiators to build MCSA by just doing some simple settings, which totally eliminates the requirement of programming skills. Finally, we evaluate the effectiveness of the framework as far as the functionality and efficiency are concerned.

this paper presents a distributed smart home middleware where each appliance is able to learn user behavior and customize their actions by themselves as well as cooperate with other appliances through a more light-weight smart home gateway. As the key components, we present a knowledge base which describes common- and appliance-specific concepts in a smart home domain, and design libraries for smart appliances and a smart home gateway. We implement the proposed middleware on our testbed and conduct evaluations. the result shows that our scheme reduces the interaction time and the runtime memory allocation.

the adoption of the layered architectural style can improve the Product Line Architecture (PLA) design by providing a better organization of the elements, flexibility and maintainability. Search based optimization approaches can also benefit the PLA design, by generating PLA alternatives associated with the best trade-offs between different measures (fitness) related to cohesion, coupling and feature modularization. However, the usage of existing search operators changes the PLA organization, and consequently may violate layered rules, impacting negatively in the architecture understanding. In order to solve this problem, this work introduces search operators that consider the layered architectural style rules. Results show that the proposed operators contribute to obtain better solutions, maintaining the adopted style, with better or equivalent fitness values.
