In modern Power Control Centers, the State Estimator application is responsible for determining the actual state of a power network based on the current network model, the available telemetry (analog measurements and digital statuses) and pseudo-measurements (scheduling patterns and data manually entered by the operator). At present each control center runs its own version of a State Estimator. We propose that it is much more economical to run one grid-wide State Estimator at one site and just exchange input and output data with the individual control centers. In this paper we describe the architecture for a Highly Available distributed RAM (HADRAM) system that can provide the necessary computational power and reliability.

the use of distributed generation (DG) in power systems has many possible benefits, but also presents many challenges. Notable among these challenges is the effect DG can have on overcurrent protection. this paper contains results pertinent to the addition of DG to the IEEE 34 node test feeder. After an overcurrent protection scheme was implemented for the benchmark system, DG of various sizes was added at specific locations. the impact of these generators was evaluated in terms of steady state normal and short circuit currents as well as protection coordination. In the studies performed so far, generally DG did not adversely affect protection selectivity and coordination for penetration levels of 20% of the original feeder load, but there were some problematic situations. the overcurrent protection must be modified so that the circuit remains correctly protected for specific DG cases.

Basic protection schemes against denial-of-service (DoS) are based on a perimeter-based model, where attacks are dealt with after they occur. this is quite often too late to prevent damage or loss of resources and service. the focus of this paper is to investigate a distributed defense method that can neutralize the attack before it reaches the potential target in mass. In order to effectively implement this method, this paper proposes a progressive, globally deploy able sentinel scheme for data sampling, packet inspection, and DoS attack detection and recovery. A simulation framework is developed to study the performance of the proposed scheme. the results show a significant improvement in how the network deals with DoS attacks, in comparison to local DoS detection and prevention schemes.

DEVS is a sound formal modeling and simulation (M&S) framework based on generic dynamic system concepts. Cell-DEVS is a formalism for cell-shaped models based on DEVS. this work presents a new simulation technique for execution of DEVS and Cell-DEVS models in parallel/distributed environments. the parallel simulator is based on time warp, and developed as a new simulation engine for CD++, a M&S toolkit that implements DEVS and Cell-DEVS theories. the technique uses a non-hierarchical approach that simplifies the structure of the simulator and reduces the communication overhead. the results obtained allowed us to achieve considerable speedups.

Monte Carlo (MC) simulation is one of the popular approaches for approximating the value of options and other derivative securities due to the absence of straightforward closed form solutions for many financial models. However, the slow convergence rate, O(N/sup - 1/2/) for N number of samples of the MC method has motivated research in quasi Monte-Carlo (QMC) techniques. QMC methods use low discrepancy (LD) sequences that provide faster, more accurate results than MC methods. In this paper, we focus on the parallelization of the QMC method on a heterogeneous network of workstations (HNOWs) for option pricing. HNOWs are machines with different processing capabilities and have distinct execution time for the same task. It is therefore important to allocate and schedule the tasks depending on the performance and resources of these machines. We present an adaptive, distributed QMC algorithm for option pricing, taking into account the performances of both processors and communications. the algorithm distributes data and computations based on the architectural features of the available processors at run time. We implement the algorithm using mpC, an extension of ANSI C language for parallel computation on heterogeneous networks. We compare and analyze the performance results with different parallel implementations. the results of our algorithm demonstrate a good performance on heterogenous parallel platforms.

In this paper a scanning program is developed based on the normal form technique to analyze the structural properties of a stressed power system. the mathematical model and procedure are presented. Numerical testing on a 17-generator system shows that in the stressed systems, more modes can be strongly excited and new modal resonance phenomenon may occur, which will cause severe nonlinear behavior through modal interaction. the system nonlinearity is not uniformly distributed in various modes. the structural information obtained from the scanning program using the normal form technique makes it possible to efficiently analyze for each mode the dominant modal interaction and the quasi-modal-resonance which lead to the nonlinear modal behavior.

Consider an undirected weighted graph G = (V, E, w). We study the problem of computing (1 + ϵ)approximate shortest paths for S × V , for a subset S ⊆ V of |S| = nr sources, for some 0 o(1) + nω(r)), where nω(r) is the time required to multiply an nr × n matrix by an n × n one. Our PRAM algorithm has polylogarithmic time (log n)O(1/ρ), and its work complexity is Õ(|E| · nρ + nω(r)), for any arbitrarily small constant ρ > 0. In particular, for r ≤ 0.313 . . ., our centralized algorithm computes S × V (1 + ϵ)-approximate shortest paths in n2+o(1) time. Our PRAM polylogarithmic-time algorithm has work complexity O(|E| · nρ + n2+o(1)), for any arbitrarily small constant ρ > 0. Previously existing solutions either require centralized time/parallel work of O(|E| · |S|) or provide much weaker approximation guarantees. In the Congested Clique model, our algorithm solves the problem in polylogarithmic time for |S| = nr sources, for r ≤ 0.655, while previous state-of-the-art algorithms did so only for r ≤ 1/2. Moreover, it improves previous bounds for all r > 1/2. For unweighted graphs, the running time is improved further to poly(log log n) for r ≤ 0.655. We examine the ability of CMPs, due to their lower on-chip communication latencies, to exploit data parallelism at inner-loop granularities similar to that commonly targeted by vector machines. Parallelizing code in this manner leads to a high frequency of barriers, and we explore the impact of different barrier mechanisms upon the efficiency of this approach. To further exploit the potential of CMPs for fine-grained data parallel tasks, we present barrier filters, a mechanism for fast barrier synchronization on-chip multi-processors to enable vector computations to be efficiently distributed across the cores of a CMP. We ensure that all threads arriving at a barrier require an unavailable cache line to proceed, and, by placing additional hardware in the shared portions of the memory subsystem, we starve their requests until they all have arrived. Specifically, our approach uses invalidation requests to both make cache lines unavailable and identify when a thread has reached the barrier. We examine two types of barrier filters, one synchronizing through instruction cache lines, and the other through data cache lines

Open science aims to make scientific research processes, tools and results accessible to all scientific communities, creating trust in science and enabling digital competences to be realized in research, leading to increased innovation. It provides standard and transparent pathways to conducting research and fosters best practices for collecting, analysing, preserving, sharing and reusing data, software, workflows and other outputs through collaborative networks. Open Science appears to be becoming the norm with its applications spanning throughout the whole research cycle of a project. the importance of making Open Science a reality is nowadays reflected in funding policies, research infrastructure and politics. In these proceedings we present the basic Open Science principles explaining briefly best practices for materialising Open Science. Subsequently, we present the results of the landscaping survey of Open Science in the Lattice Gauge theories community. We develop a general technique for the quantitative analysis of iterative distributed load balancing schemes. We illustrate the technique by studying two simple, intuitively appealing models that are prevalent in the literature: the diffusive paradigm, and periodic balancing circuits (or the dimension exchange paradigm). It is well known that such load balancing schemes can be roughly modeled by Markov chains, but also that this approximation can be quite inaccurate. Our main contribution is an effective way of characterizing the deviation between the actual loads and the distribution generated by a related Markov chain, in terms of a natural quantity which we call the local divergence. We apply this technique to obtain bounds on the number of rounds required to achieve coarse balancing in general networks, cycles and meshes in these models. For balancing circuits, we also present bounds for the stronger requirement of perfect balancing, or counting.
