Recent advances in wireless communication and multimedia processing allow mobile hosts access to multimedia content on the Internet via wireless connections. However, due to the best-effort character of the Internet and the limited resources available in wireless systems, there are many new issues and trade-offs that require discussion. Among these issues, the smooth playback of multimedia streams is an important topic. In this paper, we present a smooth playback technique for progressive multimedia streams over the Internet with wireless connections. The proposed technique employs progressive encoding techniques for multimedia streams and uses a modified MoSync algorithm to synchronize the streams at different levels of quality. Experimental results show that this technique can offer a high QoS for wirelessmultimedia systems.

With the popularity of ubiquitous multimedia access, there is an increasing demand for appropriate multimedia service selection that satisfies the QoS constraints of the wireless clients. However, due to resource limitations of wireless clients, it is a challenge to select an appropriate service, which is suitable for wireless devices based on their respective QoS demands. To overcome this challenge, we propose a novel QoS-aware multimedia service selection framework, which inherits the adoption of nature-inspired path selection behavior in the service selection. We extend the nature-inspired algorithm to support QoS for multimedia service selection. We also measure the component transcoding service reliability as well as the system reliability.

The transmission of time-sensitive multimedia traffic across unreliable wireless network links requires adaptive scheduling that respects substantial resource fluctuations and irregular traffic arrival patterns. As finding a near-optimal adaptive transmission schedule, in our case for the prioritized access categories of the 802.11e Enhanced Distributed Channel Access (EDCA), is a combinatorial optimization problem, we introduce an Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) based meta heuristic for scheduling multimedia traffic. ACO is known to develop near-optimal solutions at the expenses of additional administrative and computational overhead. We compare ACO scheduling to a deterministic scheduling approach specifically designed for the needs of multimedia scheduling called MLLF. The aim of this paper is to evaluate the feasibility of ACO approaches for multimedia scheduling in different scenarios and to conclude on the effectiveness of the selected deterministic MLLF approach in comparison to a near-optimal solution.

Packet-level interleaving combined with FEC has tended to be disregarded for video streaming over wireless, because of the delay introduced by the need to assemble the interleaved packets. However, packet level interleaving has the ability to cope with lengthy bursts of error on a wireless channel. This paper proposes adapting the degree of packet interleaving according to: the display deadlines of packets;transmit buffer occupation;and anticipated video input to the wireless channel. Conservative adaptation is applied to avoid missed deadlines and the picture type importance is taken into account. A detailed Bluetooth case study illustrates the value of the techniques and as a by-product the paper corrects some erroneous results of others for Bluetooth version 2's Enhanced Data Rate.

Podcasts are a popular way to provide multimedia information about certain topics. A multitude of podcast servers exist in the Internet, allowing people to subscribe to them. Typically, podcasts are downloaded onto desktop computers and copied on mobile devices to be played while being on the move. In this paper, we extend the idea of podcasts, making them available in mobile network environments. In particular, HyCast does not rely on central podcast directories. Instead, HyCast also allows discovering, subscribing to, and downloading podcasts and episodes in the local neighborhood. For the dissemination of podcast information, we introduce and evaluate two different strategies. One is based on peer-to-peer communication between one-hop neighbors. The second one employs clustering to reduce the overhead of the podcast information dissemination.

In the IEEE 802.11 wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs), after each collision on the shared channel, network nodes sending collided packets need to backoff for a random period of time, which is uniformly selected from the Contention Window (CW). This contention window is dynamically controlled by the Binary Exponential Backoff (BEB) algorithm. The BEB scheme suffers from fairness problem, frequent packet collisions and low throughput under high traffic load. In this thesis, we propose a new backoff algorithm, termed the Multi Rate Backoff Algorithm (MRB), for use with the IEEE 802.11 Distributed Coordination Function. In the MRB scheme, nodes with collision (or nodes with success) increase (or decrease) their contention windows in different rates depending on the current size of the CW. The MRB scheme outperforms the BEB scheme employed in the IEEE 802.11 MAC standard and the Multiplicative Increase Linear Decrease (MILD) scheme, Multiplicative Increase and Multiplicative Decrease (MIMD) scheme over a wide range of network size. In the past decade, Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks (VANET), that specialize Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANET), to vehicle to vehicle (V2V) and vehicle to infrastructure (V2I) communications have received a great deal of attention in the research community. And with a good reason: vehicular communications promise to integrate driving into a ubiquitous and pervasive network that is already redefining the way we live and work. The potential societal impact of VANET was confirmed by the proliferation of consortia and initiatives involving car manufacturers, government agencies and academia including, among others, the Car-2-Car Communication Consortium, the Vehicle Safety Consortium, the Networks-on-Wheels Project, the Vehicle Infrastructure Integration Program, and the Advanced Safety Vehicle Program. While the original impetus for VANET was traffic safety, more recent concerns involve privacy and security. It was recently noticed that allocation of 75MHz spectrum in the 5.9GHz band for Dedicate Short Range Communications (DSRC) in North America opens VANET to multimedia applications including peer-to-peer (P2P) content provisioning and the fast-growing mobile infotainment industry. In spite of their close resemblance to MANET, with which they share the same underlying philosophy, VANET networks have a number of specific characteristics that set them apart from MANET. The presentation will discuss the state of the art in VANETs as well as a zero-infrastructure for multimedia over peer to peer for VANET.
