x-ray grating interferometry has a great potential for x-ray phase imaging over conventional x-ray absorption imaging which does not provide significant contrast for weakly absorbing objects and soft biological tissues. x-ray Talbot and Talbot-Lau interferometers which are composed of transmission gratings and measure the differential x-ray phase shifts have gained popularity because they operate with polychromatic beams. In x-ray radiography, especially for non-destructive testing in industrial applications, the feasibility of continuous sample scanning is not yet completely revealed. A scanning setup is frequently advantageous when compared to a direct 2D static image acquisition in terms of field of view, exposure time, illuminating radiation, etc. This paper demonstrates an efficient scanning setup for grating-based x-ray phase imaging using laboratory-based x-ray source. An apparatus consisting of an x-ray source that emits x-rays vertically, optical gratings and a photon-counting detector was used with which continuously moving objects across the field of view as that of conveyor belt system can be imaged. The imaging performance of phase scanner was tested by scanning a long continuous moving sample at a speed of 5 mm/s and absorption, differential-phase and visibility images were generated by processing non-uniform moire movie with our specially designed phase measurement algorithm. A brief discussion on the feasibility of phase scanner with scanning setup approach including x-ray phase imaging performance is reported. The successful results suggest a breakthrough for scanning objects those are moving continuously on conveyor belt system non-destructively using the scheme of x-ray phase imaging.

Polycapillary lenses are well known optical devices for radiation and charged particles. These lenses consist of thousands channels through which the signal is transmitted by total external reflection phenomenon. Their application have made possible technical improvements in different fields such as imaging, fluorescence analysis, channeling studies etc..[ In particular, the application of this optics coupled with conventional sources such as x-ray tubes has opened a new season for potential applications of desktop instrumentations. For instance, the usage of such lenses has enhanced the spatial coherence and the brilliance over the sample allowing better resolution and contrast for imaging purposes. In addiction, improved focusing power and confocal configuration of other lenses has improved the resolution, from both the energy and the spatial points of view, in fluorescence mapping. A recent work has addressed the behavior of the transmitted radiation through a single capillary in vibrating regime. In this work a test of using a vibrating capillary for stroboscopic imaging is presented. A sample characterized by a known periodic event is studied with a synchronized vibrating capillary.

After the formidable results of x-ray 4th generation light sources based on free electron lasers around the world, a new revolutionary step is undergoing to extend the FEL performance from the present few hundred Hz to MHz-class repetition rates. In such facilities, temporally equi-spaced pulses will allow for a wide range of previously non-accessible experiments. The Advanced Photo-injector Experiment (APEx) at the Lawrence Berkeley National laboratory (LBNL), is devoted to test the capability of a novel scheme electron source, the VHF-Gun, to generate the required electron beam brightness at MHz repetition rates. In linac-based FELs, the ultimate performance in terms of brightness is defined at the injector, and in particular, cathodes play a major role in the game. Part of the APEx program consists in testing high quantum efficiency photocathodes capable to operate at the conditions required by such challenging machines. Results and status of these tests at LBNL are presented.

We present the optical layout of a reflective grating compressor specifically designed for extreme-ultraviolet FEL sources. The working principle is based on the use of a couple of constant-line-spaced gratings used at grazing incidence and illuminated in divergent light. The two possible grating configurations, namely the on-plane and off-plane, are analyzed and compared. The Group Delay Dispersion (GDD) introduced by the compressor is analytically analyzed and quantified. The spatial chirp also is considered, and its effect analyzed. The deviation from the ideal case in which the instrument is feed with a collimated beam is considered. The effect of the beam divergence on the compressor response is quantified and the attenuation of this effect by a "de-tuning" of the compressor is proposed. This solution avoids the use of a pre-collimating optics, therefore incrementing the total instrumental throughput. Finally, it is shown the optical design of an actual compressor for the FERMI FEL, that can be inserted in the optical path without any deviation or translation of the photon beam with respect to the nominal path.

In this manuscript we report on a compact experimental set-up ("mini-TIMER") conceived for transient grating (TG) experiments based on free electron laser (FEL) radiation. This set-up has been tested at the seeded FEL facility FERMI (Elettra, Trieste, Italy) and allowed us to observe the first FEL-stimulated TG signal. This experimental result is of the greatest relevance in the context of developing coherent non-linear optical methods into the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) and soft x-ray (SxR) range. Such a challenging task will be addressed in the next future at FERMI by using the present set-up and the forthcoming EIS-TIMER beamline, which is being installed at FERMI and will start the commissioning phase in the second semester 2015. The possibility to use TGs generated by FEL radiation at sub-optical wavelengths would allow developing EUV/SxR four-wave-mixing (FWM) applications, so far considered only theoretically and widely believed to be potentially able to provide major breakthroughs in several fields of science.

We consider the problem of shot-by-shot acquisition of pulse shapes at high repetition rate in accelerator-based systems. More specifically, we examine the two-step strategy consisting in (i) encoding the pulse information onto a laser pulse, and (ii) use the so-called time-stretch strategy to "slow-down" the information before recording. We thus show that the repetition rate of already existing electro-optic sampling setups can be straightforwardly increased up to the 100 x 10(6) pulses/s range, and make a demonstration for the detection of coherent THz pulses. The strategy is however not limited to electro-optic sampling of THz pulses or electron bunches. It can be applied to other types of wavelengths, provided the desired information (as e.g., FEL pulses or electron bunches shapes) can be imprinted onto a laser pulse.

Axion helioscopes search for solar axions by their conversion in x-rays in the presence of high magnetic fields. The use of low background x-ray detectors is an essential component contributing to the sensitivity of these searches. In this work, we review the recent advances on Micromegas detectors used in the CERN Axion Solar Telescope (CAST) and proposed for the future International Axion Observatory (IAxO). The actual setup in CAST has achieved background levels below 10-6 keV-1 cm-2 s-1a factor 100 lower than the first generation of Micromegas detectors. This reduction is based on active and passive shielding techniques, the selection of radiopure materials, offline discrimination techniques and the high granularity of the readout. We describe in detail the background model of the detector, based on its operation at CAST site and at the Can-franc Underground laboratory (LSC), as well as on Geant4 simulations. The best levels currently achieved at LSC are low than 10-7 keV-1 cm-2 s-1 and show good prospects for the application of this technology in IAxO. Finally, we present some ideas and results for reducing the energy threshold of these detectors below 1 keV, using high-transparent windows, autotrigger electronics and studying the cluster shape at different energies. As a high flux of axion-like-particles is expected in this energy range, a sub-keV threshold detector could enlarge the physics case of axion helioscopes. © Copyright owned by the author(s) under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike Licence.

Almost 35 years since their suggestion as a good solution to the strong CP-problem, axions remain one of the few viable candidates for the Dark Matter, although still eluding detection. Most of the methods for their detection are based on their coupling to photons, one of the most sensitive ones being the helioscope technique. We report on the current status of the CERN Axion Solar Telescope and the future International Axion Observatory (IAxO). Recent results from the second part of CAST phase II, where the magnet bores were filled with 3He gas at variable pressure achieving sensibilities on the axion mass up to 1.2 eV, are presented. Currently, CAST is expecting to improve its sensitivity to solar axions with rest mass below 0.02 eV/c2 after the upgrade of the x-ray detectors and with the implementation of a second x-ray optic. At the same time, it is exploring other possibilities at the low energy physics frontier. On the other hand IAxO, the fourth generation axion helioscope, aims to improve CAST's performance in terms of axion-photon coupling by 1-1.5 orders of magnitude. Some unsatisfactory characteristics of Ti2AlNb-based alloys restrict its practical application, such as the insufficient high temperature oxidation, corrosion resistance and poor wear resistance. The double glow plasma surface chromizing can improve their wear resistance, however the hot corrosion properties of surface plasma chromised Ti2AlNb-based alloys were little investigated. The microstructure, composition and surface hot corrosion morphologies of Ti2AlNb-based alloy were analyzed by x-ray diffraction (xrd) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The xrd of alloying layer indicated that the Cr-Nb alloy phase was the main composition, including the compact and uniform Cr2Nb phase, which was benefit to improve the hot corrosion properties of alloy.

The very low emittance and low energy spread source of a future Cornell energy recovery linac (ERL) will be equipped with long undulators of large numbers of short period magnets. The power density in the undulator radiation central cone will be much higher than that from normal undulators at current 3rd generation sources. The deformation of liquid nitrogen (LN2) cooled silicon crystal monochromators for ERL beamlines is evaluated by parameterizing the thermal problem with a modified linear power density function based on a simplified analytical model. This provides a clear and "universal" description of thermal deformation under different thermal footprints, variable loads and is independent of specific facility. The characteristics of thermal deformation of LN2-cooled Si crystals for Cornell ERL undulators is also given using finite element analysis (FEA).
