In this work, a meta-heuristic approach integrated the genetic algorithm (GA) with ranking and selection (R&S) is proposed to solve for a good enough solution of the hard stochastic simulation optimization problem (SSOP) with huge solution space. First, a rough model is used as a fitness evaluation in the GA to select N roughly good solutions from entire solution space. Then, we proceed with the R&S policy to search for a good enough solution from the N roughly good solutions. Finally, the meta-heuristic approach is applied to a booking limits problem at a hotel baby, which is formulated as a hard SSOP that consists of a huge solution space comprised by the vector of booking limits. The vector of good enough booking limits obtained by the proposed approach is promising in the aspects of solution quality and computational efficiency.

An approach of hysteresis modeling in piezoelectric actuators is presented based on the multi-input single-output (MISO) fuzzy system. The proposed model adopts first-order Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy system and transforms the multi-valued hysteresis into a one-to-one mapping with the extended input space vector. The generated fuzzy subspaces (multi-dimensional fuzzy sets) assign the maximum membership degree to the input data vectors. Fewer fuzzy subspaces are obtained by introducing the nearest neighbor and super radius concepts. The consequent parameter optimization is implemented after training the fuzzy system. Experimental results demonstrate that this methodology is algorithmically easy and can achieve high modeling accuracy.

This paper presents an adaptive flow control approach for controlling flow separation in a stator cascade within a low-speed axial-flow compressor using an air injection technique. Flow separation usually manifests itself as an increase in a total pressure loss across a blade row. A 1-D unsteady flow model based on the Euler equations incorporating a pressure loss parameter is used to design a feedback control of the total pressure at the outlet. The air injection control is formulated as a pointwise control in the interior region of the solution domain of the Euler equations. The feedback adaptive control strategy relies on a recursive least-square parameter estimation to estimate the effectiveness of air injection. A nonlinear trajectory optimization is developed in order to determine an optimal air injection gain schedule. A gradient-based computational procedure based on a wave-splitting finite-difference method is implemented for the optimization method. Disturbances due to variations in the inlet flow condition at the stator blade row are minimized by a quasi-steady state error-correction feedback optimal control in order to maintain a desired air injection value. The nonlinear optimization and quasi-steady state feedback optimal control are based on a recent adjoint method for the Euler equations. A numerical simulation demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed flow control strategy.
