Today's networking hardware (e.g. switches, routers) is typically running 24/7, regardless of the traffic volume. This is because in current networks, the controlling and data forwarding functions are embedded in the same devices, and all L2/L3network protocols are designed to work in a distributed manner. Therefore, network devices must be switched on all the time to handle the traffic. This consequently results in very high global energy consumption of communication networks. Software Defined networking was recently introduced as a new networking paradigm, in which the control plane is physically separated from the forwarding plane and moved to a globally-aware software controller. As a consequence, traffic can be monitored in real time and rerouted very fast regarding certain objectives such as load balancing or QoS enhancement. Accordingly, it opens new opportunities to improve the overall network performance in general and the energy efficiency in particular. This paper proposes an approach that reconfigures the network in order to reduce the energy consumption, based on the current traffic load. Our main idea is to switch on a minimum amount of necessary switches/routers and links to carry the traffic. We first formulate the problem as a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) problem and further present a heuristic method, so called Strategic Greedy Heuristic, with four different strategies, to solve the problem for large networks. We have carried out extensive simulations for a typical campus network and arbitrary mesh networks with realistic traffic information and energy consumption, to prove the potential energy saving of the proposed approach. The results showed that we can save up to 45% of the energy consumption at nighttime.

A Steepest Ascent numerical procedure for offline trajectory optimization of a surface-to-surface missile attacking a stationary target is presented. A detailed numerical solution, starting from building the mathematical formulation till generating an offline angle of attack control history is illustrated. The formulation entails nonlinear 2-dimensional missile flight dynamics with mixed boundary conditions. The influences of the optimization algorithm controlling parameters are investigated. A new weighting matrix is proposed. Finally, a comparison between the obtained control history and the one obtained by a nonlinear optimal control package "GPOPS" is presented. The results indicate that the use of Steepest Ascent method, to a great extent, is comparable in accuracy and iteration time to the well known optimization package "GPOPS".

The purpose of this paper is to develop a bi-level metaheuristic approach to solving the Optimal Bus Transit Route network Design Problem (OBTRNDP). A mix integer linear programming model is first formulated for the OBTRNDP. An innovative bi-level metaheuristic solution approach is then presented, in which the upper level finds the feasible network patterns (including the transit network routes and associated service frequencies), the lower level then evaluates such network solutions and provides feedback, and a genetic algorithm based metaheuristic approach is used to optimize the transit route network. network experiments are conducted. Distributed cooperative control of multi-agent systems is used to implement the secondary frequency control of microgrids. The proposed control synchronizes the frequency of distributed generators (DG) to the nominal frequency and shares the active power among DGs based on their ratings. This frequency control is implemented through a communication network with one-way communication links, and is fully distributed such that each DG only requires its own information and the information of its neighbors on the communication network graph. Due to the distributed structure of the communication network, the requirements for a central controller and complex communication network are obviated, and the system reliability is improved. Content-Centric networking (CCN) proposes a shift from the traditional host-centric communication to a content-centric paradigm, which focuses on the delivery of content to target users. Routing mechanism is a major issue of CCN and has a pivotal role on CCN system performance, where content is addressed by their names instead of their host locations. However, traditional CCN routing is based on broadcast/multicast, which lacks control of the forwarding interfaces and may bring redundant retrieval. In this paper, we present a combination of Genetic algorithm and Ant Colony optimization (GAAC) for CCN routing optimization, based on the distributed caching mechanism of SoCCeR strategy. Our simulation results show that GAAC can accelerate convergence, reduce delay and achieve better performance.
