In order to improve the dynamic performance of five-axis heavy vehicle, a variable universe fuzzy control method is proposed to optimize suspension parameters. Five-axis multi-body dynamic model including electro-hydraulic proportional valve was firstly established in software ADAMS/Car. The variable universe fuzzy controller based on fuzzy neural network was also designed in MATLAB/Simulink, and then the co-simulation was conducted. The dynamic characteristics of five-axis heavy vehicle are studied to verify the effect of suspension parameters optimized by variable universe fuzzy control method in the A, B and C-level random pavement and different speed conditions. Simulation results show that compared with passive suspension, the real-time optimization of variable fuzzy control based on FNN can improve the ride comfort and the dynamic load of tire. Under different driving conditions, ride comfort can be increased by about 25%-30%, and the dynamic load of tire generally decreases by 25%-35%. Therefore this method has a certain practicability and effectiveness.

In this paper we present the problem of computing optimal tours of toll inspectors on German motorways. This problem is a special type of vehicle routing problem and builds up an integrated model, consisting of a tour planning and a duty rostering part. The tours should guarantee a network-wide control whose intensity is proportional to given spatial and time dependent traffic distributions. We model this using a space-time network and formulate the associated optimization problem by an integer program (IP). Since sequential approaches fail, we integrated the assignment of crews to the tours in our model. In this process all duties of a crew member must fit in a feasible roster. It is modeled as a Multi-Commodity Flow Problem in a directed acyclic graph, where specific paths correspond to feasible rosters for one month. Optimal reactive power dispatch is an important task to achieve secure and economic operation of power systems. A well-organized allocation of reactive power in an electric network can minimize the system losses. This paper presents a Cultural Algorithm (CA) with a single point crossover to minimize the real power loss subjected to limits on generator real and reactive power outputs. In this hybrid approach, CA is used to give a good direction to the optimal global region, and a domain knowledge is used as a fine tuning to determine the optimal solution at the final for better convergence. The solution can be achieved by varying the bus voltages, the on-load tap changer positions of transformers and by switching of shunt capacitors. The performance of the proposed method is demonstrated on IEEE 14-bus system to find the optimal reactive power control variables subjected to various equality and inequality constraints. It is found that the results obtained by the proposed method are comparable in terms real power losses.

The increasing demand for real-time multimedia applications targeting groups of users, together with the need for assuring high quality support for end-to-end content distribution, is motivating the scientific community and industry to develop novel control, management and optimization mechanisms with Quality of Service (QoS) and Quality of Experience (QoE) support. In this context, this paper introduces Q-OSys (QoS-routing with Systematic Access), a distributed QoS-routing approach for enhancing future networks with autonomous mechanisms orchestrating admission control, per-class overprovisioning, IP Multicast and load-balancing to efficiently support multi-user multimedia sessions. Simulation experiments were carried to show the efficiency and impact of Q-OSys on network resources (bandwidth utilization and packet delay). Q-OSys is also evaluated from a user point-of-view, by measuring well-known objective and subjective QoE metrics, namely Peak Signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR), Structural Similarity (SSM) Video Quality Metric (VQM) and Mean Opinion Score (MOS). © 2012 ICST Institute for Computer Science, Social Informatics and Telecommunications Engineering.

Accurately rainfall-runoff forecasting modeling is a challenging task. Recent neural network (NN) has provided an alternative approach for developing rainfall-runoff forecasting model, which performed a nonlinear mapping between inputs and outputs. In this paper, an effective hybrid optimization strategy by incorporating the jumping property of simulated annealing (SA) into Genetic Algorithm (GA), namely GASA, is used to train and optimize the network architecture and connection weights of neural networks for rainfall-runoff forecasting in a catchment located Liujiang River, which is a watershed from Guangxi of China. This new algorithm incorporates metropolis acceptance criterion into crossover operator, which could maintain the good characteristics of the previous generation and reduce the disruptive effects of genetic operators. The results indicated that compared with pure NN, the GASA algorithm increased the diversity of the individuals, accelerated the evolution process and avoided sinking into the local optimal solution early. Results obtained were compared with existent bibliography, showing an improvement over the published methods for rainfall-runoff prediction. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

Due to the increase in world-wide containerized cargo transport port authorities are facing considerable pressure to increase efficiency of existing facilities. Container vessels with 18,000 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) are expected soon to create high flow peaks at container terminals. In this paper we propose a new framework for managing intermodal container terminals, based on the model predictive control methodology. A model based on queues and container categorization is used by a model predictive controller to solve the handling resource allocation problem in a container terminal in an optimal way, while respecting constraints on resource availability. The optimization of the operations is performed in an integrated way for the whole terminal rather than only for an individual subprocess. Containers are categorized into empty and full containers, and divided in classes according to their final destination. With more detailed information available, like container final destination, it is possible to establish priorities for the container flows inside the terminal. The order in which the container classes should be loaded into a carrier can now be addressed taking into account the carrier future route. The model ability to track the number of containers per class makes this framework suitable for describing terminals integrated in an intermodal transport network and a valuable tool for coordinating the transport modal shift towards a more sustainable and reliable transport. The potential of the proposed framework is illustrated with simulation studies based on a high-peak flow scenario and for a long-term scheduled scenario. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

Aircraft engine is an important component of the airplane, which lifespan and reliability have directly influence to flight safety. Vibration analysis is an effective fault diagnosis method for airplane's mechanical construction fault. Several typical vibration faults have drawn from the vibration analysis on the basis of fault mechanism in aircraft engine, and the standard vibration fault-symptom (Fuzzy Membership) relationship table have constructed based on Fuzzy Mathematic theory in this paper. Sample data are simulated on the basis of this table. Sequential Minimal optimization (SMO) is a fast algorithm for training Support Vector Machines (SVM). The simulated result showed a great improvement on computation efficiency by selecting double threshold parameter for SMO algorithm than single threshold. In order to examine the algorithm's effect applying in the aircraft engine fault diagnosis, Radial Basis Function (RBF) Neural network, C4.5 Decision Tree, SVM (chunking), Platt's SMO and Improved SMO algorithm are applied to the training data and test data. It is shown that the Improved SMO algorithm displayed superior comprehensive performance. Finally, the vibration fault feature is reduced based on Fuzzy-Rough Sets theory. The research shows that the Improved SMO algorithm is quicker than other algorithm in aircraft engine fault diagnosis with the reduced feature attributes, and its accuracy is high. © 2012 IEEE.

The integration of electric vehicles (EVs) poses potential issues for low voltage (LV) distribution networks, such as voltage deviations and overloading of equipment. controlled EV charging is seen as one possibility for reducing, or even eliminating, these issues. This work presents an optimisation method which focuses on controlling the rate at which EVs charge over a 24-hour time horizon, subject to certain constraints. A sample distribution network is used and the optimisation tool is tested for multiple objective functions.

A hierarchical control structure for optimal dispatch of distributed energy resources within different levels of the distribution network has been presented and a deterministic optimization and agent coordination algorithm has been proposed for optimizing the operation of flexible resources at the community cell level. Coordinated optimal dispatch of resources ensures that only the required number of loads/resources are dispatch at every moment, which contributes towards alleviating simultaneous load reconnection which would otherwise occur if all loads/resources were dispatched independently (in an uncoordinated manner). It has also been shown in this paper how number of cold loads and a community storage unit, could be dispatched in a coordinated and cooperative manner to contribute towards the objective function of maintaining the community's power flow below a pre-specified threshold.

Particle swarm optimization (PSO) is one of swarm intelligence. It was modified by escape of the particle velocity, and a self-adaptive PSO (SAPSO) was proposed to overcome the PSO shortcomings of the premature convergence and the local optimization. The SAPSO is combined with radial basis function (RBF) neural network to form a SAPSON hybrid algorithm. Compared with radial basis function neural network, SAPSON has less adjustable parameters, faster convergence speed, global optimization and higher identification precision in the numerical experiment. © 2011 IEEE.
