Fixed access networks widely employ fiber-optical techniques due to the extremely wide bandwidth offered to subscribers. In the recent years enormous increase of user data is visible in mobile systems too. Therefore the importance of fiber-optical techniques within the fixed transmission/transport part of mobile systems is inevitably increasing. This paper summarizes a few reasons and gives examples why and how fiber-optic techniques are employed efficiently in 2G networks.

In the heterogeneous wireless network environment, uneven traffic distribution among different wireless access networks results in the distinction of user network resource. A load balancing scheme is proposed to balance load of diverse access networks, lower unfairness of user bandwidth and improve efficiency of heterogeneous wireless networks (HWNs) resource by association control mechanism. The optimization goal of association control is to achieve user max-min fairness bandwidth. The fairness bandwidth allocation in HWNs is NP-hard problem so an approximation algorithm of polynomial-time is presented to achieve suboptimal result. Final simulation demonstrates the presented algorithm's performance in user bandwidth fairness and whole system efficiency.

Active queue management (AQM) is a key congestion control scheme for reducing packet loss and improving network utilization in TCP/IP networks. This paper proposes a hybrid intelligent proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller as an active queue manager for Internet routers. This paper deals with hybrid system (GA-BF) based on the conventional GA (Genetic Algorithm) and BF (Bacterial Foraging) which is social foraging behavior of bacteria. A hybrid (GA-BF) is employed to derive optimal or near optimal PID controller gains such that an objective function of step response characteristic's parameter is minimized, and thereby a stable queue length, low packet loss, and high link utilization for TCP networks are guaranteed. The performance of the proposed control scheme is evaluated in various network scenarios via a series of numerical simulations.

The paper is devoted to modeling and optimization of reliable wireless mesh networks that employ directional antennas. We introduce two mixed-integer programming formulations that allow to simultaneously characterize routing patterns and transmission schedules. The first model allows for maximizing the minimal flow in a network. The second model involves reliability constraints and aims at minimizing the number of used directional antennas. In both cases locations of mesh routers are known. However, the number of installed radio interfaces and their directions are subject to optimization. We discuss a way of solving a cost minimization problem based on the introduced characterization, and present an extensive numerical study that illustrates the efficiency of the solution algorithm.

Demand for fast failure recovery in modern IP-based networks has become compelling recently. Loop-Free Alternates (LFA) is a simple IP Fast ReRoute (IPFRR) specification proposed by the IETF that does not require profound changes to the network infrastructure before deployment. However this simplicity has a disadvantage, in that usually LFA does not provide complete protection for all possible failure cases in a general topology. The LFA graph extension problem asks for adding new links to the network in an attempt to improve the failure case coverage. Unfortunately, this problem is NP-complete. In this paper, we give a detailed graph model for this problem, for the first time formulating it both for the link and node protecting cases, and we propose several fast approximation algorithms to solve it. We compare the performance of the algorithms in extensive numerical studies and we conclude that the optimum can be approximated well in most cases relevant to practice.

It is an important issue to preserve the consistent delivering order of messages at each site in Distributed Virtual Environments(DVEs). Currently, the violations of message delivery order are inclined to happen in the large-scale and frequently interactive DVEs running on Wide Area network(WAN). The inconsistent anomalies are characterized as unpredictable, unrepeatable and uncontrollable, which results in the severe problem for the development of the consistency control approaches. Meanwhile, it is also highly expensive to directly verify the proposed approaches on WAN. Therefore, in this paper, we design and establish an original multi-layered emulation platform in LAN, which can emulate the network latency of WAN and repeat the scenarios of violations. On the platform, the designers of consistency approaches don't have to spend efforts to realize the fundamental functions of the verification, but could pay more attention to the development and optimization of the control algorithms, which is very beneficial for the improvement of message ordering approaches.

An optical grid network provides high speed communications for large scale applications and services may require, for (very) limited time periods, an ultra-high bit rate network services at the order of the transmission capacity of the network infrastructures. In the context of resilient optical grids, we investigate how to maximize the grade of services for given transport capacities, while maximizing the protection level, i.e., against single link vs. single link and node (including server node) failures. In this paper, we present a large scale optimization model, solved with the help of Column Generation (CG) techniques. The model allows the exploration of different protection schemes: protection against single link failures, or single link and node failures, including or not the single failures of the server nodes. Numerical results are presented on some european and German network topologies. Results show that, for given transport capacities, guaranteeing protection against single link and node failures, or only against single link failures does not affect significantly the grade of services. Results also show that the link dimensioning which is proposed is fairly efficient in terms of bandwidth utilization.

Paper introduces the type of reversible lanes technology briefly and discusses the fundamentals of reversible lanes technology in two aspects: road conditions and traffic flow characteristics. Based on the internal relationship between reversible lanes and traffic control, also puts forward the framework for reversible lanes and intersection signal control linkage control optimization, mainly researches the traffic organization and intersection organization method of reversible lanes in the following aspects: road situation assessment; signal phase and sequence designing; optimized design of the cycle, green time, splits and offsets for the linkage control. In addition, based on theoretical research, this thesis studies the traffic organization and intersection organization method of reversible lanes in depth. Finally, stronger practicability and accuracy of the methods proposed is verified through the simulation of Kunming transportation network.

In order to improve resilience in telecommunication networks, multi-paths can be very useful. When disjoint in nature, these multi-paths not only increase resilience of the network, but also tend to optimize the additional capacity required for protection against failures. In this paper, we study the path selection problem for the self-protection multi-path paradigm. We propose a model for load sharing among disjoint multi-paths covering all single link failures. In case of a path failure, the load is re-distributed to the remaining paths. A load distribution of demand over paths in each scenario is determined with the aim of minimizing the maximum bandwidth utilization. We have studied the effect of disjoint and not-disjoint paths in the path set. We observe that if there are more paths available for the optimization process and path selection is left to the discretion of the model, the available capacities can be utilized better and the resultant load distribution on the overall network also balances out.

Overlay-based multicast has been proposed as an efficient solution to ensure multicast communication in the Internet. In contrast to IP multicast, it uses a virtual topology created in an overlay network and eliminates many drawbacks related to scalability or management control. In this paper we focus on modelling and optimization of survivability of overlay multicast system which is aimed at throughput maximization. Based on fractional Steiner trees, we employ the fractional spanning tree packing problem and propose various constraints in order to model features of real systems comprising robustness against a single link failure. The paper compares optimal results of the tree packing model with a general formulation based on conceptual flows dedicated to maximizing throughput in an overlay multicast system with node capacity constraints. Although the linear program of tree packing problem cannot guarantee globally the best utilization of overlay system's resources, but it provides a relative tradeoff between applicability in result quality and time consumption meaning.
