With the expansion and the diversification of current networks in terms of applications, technologies and services, the network control and management are becoming overly hard to manage manually even for skilled administrators. The autonomic computing and the knowledge plane are two promising initiatives proposed to cope with the ever-growth network complexity. In this article, we propose to use the piloting plane concept to grant autonomicity in current networks. This plane aims at optimizing existing applications by using elaborate algorithms fed by pertinent knowledge recovered from the knowledge plane. In our approach, we demonstrate that the knowledge and the piloting planes are complementary and both are required when implementing autonomic solutions. We illustrate our proposal by applying these concepts on the handover selection phase which is a key issue in the handover process for granting global mobility to users in heterogeneous environment. We also describe a first implementation of our handover piloting system. Results from preliminary tests in real environments scenario exhibit the effectiveness of our system. ©2009 IEEE.

We developed energy system optimization models to identify new strategies for designing, installing, and controlling stationary cogenerative fuel cell systems (FCSs) so as to minimize 1) electricity and heating costs for building owners and 2) emissions of the primary greenhouse gas - carbon dioxide (CO2). A main goal of this work is to employ relatively inexpensive simulation studies to discover more financially and environmentally effective approaches for installing FCSs. Model results show that the most optimal strategies for cost and CO2 savings differ, but both invoke novel approaches. The strategy with the highest cost savings combines cogeneration, networking, variable heat-to-power ratio, no load following for the primary control at maximum electrical output, and subsequent heat load following for the secondary control. Results assume a base case with no FCSs installed and most power and heat provided by a cogenerative combined cycle gas turbine and any additional electricity supplied by the average mix of power plants in California. Relative to the base case, this strategy results in an approximate 25% cost reduction. Similarly, the strategy with the highest CO2 emission savings combines cogeneration, networking, variable heat-to-power ratio, heat load following for the primary control, and subsequent no load following for the secondary control. Relative to the base case, this strategy results in CO2 savings of 80%. Energy costs and CO2 emissions can be reduced significantly by switching from certain "business-as-usual" approaches to novel ones;specifically from 1) stand-alone to networked, and then from 2) fixed heat-to-power ratio to variable.

There has been a growing interest in the generation and storage of power from ambient vibration using piezoelectric transduction. It is well-known that by connecting a piezoelectric energy harvester to a power-electronic switching network, proper switching control can yield favorable energy transduction. It has also been shown that in broadband response, the switching controller maximizing power flow to storage can be solved as an H(2) optimal control problem. For extremely small-scale applications, however, the background power necessary to keep a controller online continuously may exceed the average harvested power. In such circumstances, it is necessary to restrict feedback controllers to a class which can be realized with very little power. This paper investigates the use of passive networks to impose transducer voltage feedback laws on energy harvesting systems. Such an implementation requires external power only to gate one mosfet in the power-electronic drive circuitry at a constant duty cycle. The optimization of the passive network for optimal power generation is a challenging, nonconvex problem. This paper presents some preliminary results on a sub-optimal LMI-based design approach for this problem. An example is given for a stochastically-excited piezoelectric bimorph beam.

Next Generation networks (NGN) are envisaged to see a vast and inevitable convergence of diverse multimedia and mobile services with versatile bandwidth utilities. As such, a design challenge for NGN is to allow efficient rate allocation without compromising Quality of Service (QoS) provisioning to any service and thereby enable a global welfare gain. However, the traditional rate allocation schemes assume elasticity of application services and strict-concavity of utility functions. Such assumptions provide design simplicity, but in practice, limit the applicability of resulting protocols, in that severe QoS problems are encountered when bandwidth is shared by inelastic services with nonconcave utility functions. As such, the current strict priority based schemes cannot maximize the overall network utility for NGN, and hence bring a significant global welfare loss. This paper presents an adaptive rate control algorithm to distributively allocate transmission rates to multiclass services. The proposed algorithm is based on the Lagrangian Relaxation for a dual formulation by decomposing the rate allocation problem into a master-slave framework. We use a novel Surrogate Subgradient method to solve the master problem. For the nonconvex subproblems, we compare the performance of a number of global optimization methods, where the objectives are to achieve fast convergence as well as accuracy.

All-Optical Label Switching (AOLS) is a new technology that performs forwarding without any Optical-Electrical-Optical conversions. The most promising scheme to manage the control plane of these optical networks is Generic MultiProtocol Label Switching (GMPLS). In this paper, we study the problem of routing a set of requests in GMPLS networks with the aim of minimizing the number of labels required to ensure the forwarding. In order to spare the label space, we consider label stacking, allowing the configuration of GMPLS tunnels. We study particularly this network design problem when the network is a line. We provide an exact algorithm for the case in which all the requests have a common source and present some approximation algorithms and heuristics when an arbitrary number of sources are distributed over the line. We analyze by simulations the performance of our proposed algorithms and compare them with previous ones. © IFIP International Federation for Information Processing 2009.

In this paper we cover the problem of load balancing in terms of optimum cell selection and wireless channel condition in the hybrid optical wireless network. For a given set of multimedia users with minimum quality of service requirements and a set of best effort users we find the optimum resource allocation that guarantees services for the users and maximizes the total network utility. Our model applies for the convergence network of EPON and WiMAX where the TDM-like resource assignment scheme and the WiMAX air interfaces are used. We achieve convexity of the problem and solve the optimization problem. The proposed algorithm is simulated using MATLAB and the results show validation of the framework, i.e., load balancing scheme gains better network performances.

Many different network types have been promoted for use in control systems. controlNet network is a well known member of the family of protocols-the CIP (control an Information Protocol). It has been developed by Rockwell Automation. The controlNet network's mission is to provide reliable, high-speed transport of two basic types of application information: control and I/O data;non-time critical messaging data related to the controlled system. Firstly, this paper introduces the controlNet Of Rockwell three networks and the background of three layers networks;Secondly, through the configuration in RSLogix5000 to the network, the optimization in RSNetWorx is studied;Finally, we study the key parameters of the network and a detailed discussion of parameters optimization for controlNet network is provided, including network utilization, NUT, magnitude of the expected time delay, and characteristics of time delays. Simulation results are Presented for several different scenarios, and the advantages and disadvantages of the network are summarized.

Distributed Self-optimization of Handover for the Long Term Evolution

The 3GPP Long Term Evolution (LTE) is defining the next generation radio access network which introduces advanced service capabilities in base stations. Consequently, self-management is seen as an enabling technique for the deployment of LTE. This paper discusses handover optimization options For base stations and evaluates one possible approach of distributed self-optimization, After a review of the key aspects related to handover optimization, a self-optimization technique for handover based on trial-and-error is presented. The interference between neighboring nodes, a typical problem of distributed systems, is analyzed in more detail and a technique to cope with it is presented. Simulation results show that the control algorithm can achieve the expected optimal configuration through iterative steps and the effect of interfering neighboring nodes can be mitigated at the expense of a longer optimization time.
