The use of a manageable optical network is an important requirement for the new advanced data-intensive grid applications that begin to emerge on the e-Science field. In this paper, we propose an ACO-based algorithm that can provision on-demand and dynamically lightpaths on a grid system. Indeed, the proposed algorithm can schedule jobs by discovering processing and network resources on the grid, assigning the job to a specific system and executing the job. This is achieved with the help of an integrated GMPLS control plane, which allows both resource monitoring and management of networking resources.

Compared with unicast, video multicast over 802.11 WLANs should handle varying channel conditions of multiple users and user topology changes as well as scalability to achieve good quality for all users in the serving area. This paper analyzes error control strategies available in different layers of the network stack, including modulation and channel coding in physical layer, cross-packet Forward Error Correction (FEC), packet size optimization and scalable video coding in application layer. By combining and adapting these schemes jointly, an adaptive cross layer optimization algorithm is proposed for scalable video multicast over 802.11 WLANs. Based on a variety of criteria, improvement in overall video quality for all the targeted users can be achieved.

In this work, stability control of a bipedal model during disturbed standing is investigated. The controller consists of a General Regression Neural network (GRNN) feedback control, which stabilizes the biped in a region around the upright position, and a PID feedback control, which keeps the biped at the upright position. The controller is designed to minimize an energy-related cost function while satisfying the constraints between the feet and the ground. The optimization has been carried out using the genetic algorithm. The stability of the optimally controlled bipedal system is analyzed using the concept of Lyapunov exponents, and a stability region is determined. Simulation results show that the proposed optimal controller can keep the biped at the upright position while keeping the feet stationary on the ground. The work contributes to bipedal balancing control, which is important to the development of bipedal robots.

In this paper, a general combinatorial Ant System-based distributed algorithm modeled like a dynamic optimization problem is presented. In the proposed algorithm, the solution space of the dynamic combinatorial optimization problem is mapped into the space where the ants will walk, and the transition probability and the pheromone update formula of the ant system are defined according to the objective function of the communication problem. We test and compare the performance of our routing algorithm against well-known routing schemes for wireless sensor networks and via simulations show that it consumes less energy per packet and extends the lifetime of the network.

The intention of the following investigation was to establish a methodology for the development of radio networks for the interconnection between educative centers of high and basic education. For the interconnection a hybrid modality between two technologies depending on the geographic, area in which are the educative centers and of the social and cultural aspects the region is considered. The first modality talks about the technology WIMAX, that is a fundamental network of transport that allows the interconnection of localities with high rates of bits, indifferently of the existence or not line of sight. The second modality of transport talks about to the use of free space optical systems (FSO) like fundamental network transport;this is a technology that uses beams light for the transmission of high rates of bits between localities with line of sight. Soon the use of the WiFi technology is considered for the network of distribution of information to the end users. The use of one or another technology will depend on the results of the application of the developed methodology. The necessity to create the methodology is in the nonexistence of a knowledge base that anticipates the suitable use of existing technological means in the market anticipating of this form the optimization of the resources contributed by the state for these curing of the Universal Service. The bandwidth allocation problem in ATM networks is NP-complete. This paper presents a novel generalized particle approach (GPA) to optimize the bandwidth allocation and Q o S parameter for ATM networks. The GPA transforms the optimization of ATM networks into a kinematics and dynamics of numerous particles in a force-field. The GPA has many advantages in terms of the higher parallelism, multi-objective optimization, multi-type coordination, and easiness for hardware implementation. During the ATM networks optimization, the GPA may deal with a variety of random and emergent phenomena, such as the congestion, failure, and interaction. This paper also gives the GPA's propertied regarding its correctness, convergency and stability. The simulations have shown the effectiveness and suitability of the GPA to the optimization of ATM networks.

In third generation mobile networks, transmission rates can be assigned to both real time and non real time applications. We address in this paper the question of how to allocate transmission rates in a manner that is both optimal and fair. As optimality criterion we use the Pareto optimality notion, and as fairness criterion we use a general concept of which the max-min fairness (which is the standardized fairness concept in ATM networks) and the proportional fairness (which characterizes fairness obtained by some transport protocols for the Internet) are special cases. We show that the problem is a joint optimization system of the transmission rate and the power. We formulate the fair allocation problem as an optimization problem and propose both exact as well as approximating solutions. We consider both uplink and downlink problems and study also macrodiversity.

Video on Demand (VOD) is one of the most promising services in Broadband Integrated Services Digital network (B-ISDN) for the next generation. VOD can be classified into two types of services: Near VOD (NVOD) and Interactive VOD (IVOD). For either service, some video servers should be installed at some nodes in the tree structured VOD network, so that each node with a video server stores video programs and distributes stored programs to customers. Given a tree-structured VOD network and the total number of programs being served in the network, the resource allocation problem in a VOD network providing a mixture of IVOD and NVOD services is to determine where to install video servers for IVOD service and both IVOD and NVOD services. In this study we develop an efficient dynamic programming algorithm for solving the problem. We also implement the algorithm based on a service policy assumed in this paper.

Failing down is going to be a crucial problem to an elder today. In many countries, unintentional injury was being one of the leading causes of death in persons over age 65 years. As the society now, there are more and more solitary elders of life alone and because of the isolation, it is necessary to design an intelligent and sensitive falling detector for the elderly people. In this paper, we present an intelligent and portable fall detection device based on artificial neural network technology. This fall detector consists of two main components: accelerometer and microprocessor. The tri-axis accelerometer is used to continuously measure the variation of elder's 3 ways acceleration. The microprocessor reads the signals from the accelerometer and performs the fall activity recognition through a back-propagation neural network model. This device is integrated in a small box which can be holding on the belt for elder.
