Power system restoration is one of the main problems in the electrical engineering area, due to the improving dependency of electricity of the modem industrial society. The restoration of large electrical power systems after the occurrence of serious blackouts is a complex problem where the basic goal is to obtain the system configuration in order to supply loads with different priorities. The restoration is done through stages and in each stage the service is restored to a predetermined set of loads. A method to solve the basic problem in a real power system restoration process is presented in this work. The solution takes into account the nonlinear electric network model (AC model) as well as its constraints and operational limits. The fictitious network concept is extended to the reactive model. Linear programming, a new model for the linearized power flow and conventional load flow calculation are also used. Results obtained with a test system and with a large realistic system are presented.

In this article, a neural network model is presented for forecasting the average speed values at highway traffic detectors locations using the Fuzzy ARTMAP theory. The performance of the model is measured by the deviation between the speed values provided by the loop detectors and the predicted speed values. Different Fuzzy ARTMAP configuration cases are analysed in their training and testing phases. Some ad-hoc mechanisms added to the basic Fuzzy ARTMAP structure are also described to improve the entire model performance. The achieved results make this model suitable for being implemented on advanced traffic management systems (ATMS) and advanced traveller information system (ATIS).

BGP optimal egress selection is one of a recent trend in routing research. Current hot-potato routing has the problem of routing instability. This paper provides a new algorithm named BGP-RO-ES to minimize hot-potato disruptions while satisfying multiple constraints of different metrics, such as traffic engineering, the cost of traffic across the network and the cost of maintaining lightweight tunnels. The algorithm can be adaptive to different link failures and can be implemented in current BGP routers with a little change. Simulation results show that the control stability of BGP-RO-ES can be very close to that of TIE algorithm and that of RTF_TIE algorithm spending only half of the cost of maintaining lightweight tunnels.

In this paper, we propose an ACO-based algorithm that can adaptively balance the network load to mitigate congestion, and hence reduce the overall loss of packets in an OPS network. In addition, the proposed algorithm is fault-tolerant, with the recovery from a failed link or node starting even before detection and localization of the failure event. Since both routing and restoration rely on pheromone levels laid by ant-like agents, any failure will be promptly perceived by some ants, which will then try to circumvent the affected part of the network, thus adapting the routing to the new topology.

The use of a manageable optical network is an important requirement for the new advanced data-intensive grid applications that begin to emerge on the e-Science field. In this paper, we propose an ACO-based algorithm that can provision on-demand and dynamically lightpaths on a grid system. Indeed, the proposed algorithm can schedule jobs by discovering processing and network resources on the grid, assigning the job to a specific system and executing the job. This is achieved with the help of an integrated GMPLS control plane, which allows both resource monitoring and management of networking resources.

Internal switches in all-photonic networks do not perform data conversion into the electronic domain, thereby eliminating a potential capacity bottleneck, but the inability to perform efficient optical buffering introduces network scheduling challenges. In this paper we focus on the problem of scheduling fixed-length frames in all-photonic star-topology networks with the goal of minimizing rejected demand. We formulate the task as an optimization problem and characterize its complexity. We describe the minimum rejection algorithm (MRA), which minimizes total rejection, and demonstrate that the fair matching algorithm (FMA) minimizes the maximum percentage rejection of any connection. We analyze through OPNET simulation the rejection and delay performance.
