This paper presents a global view of measurement-driven traffic engineering, explores the interplay between traffic matrix estimation and routing optimization and demonstrates how demand uncertainties can be accounted for in the optimization step to guarantee a robust and reliable result. Based on a unique data set of complete measured traffic matrices, we quantify the demand uncertainties in an operational IP network and demonstrate how a number of robust optimization schemes allow to find fixed MPLS configurations that are close to the performance limits given by time-varying routing under full demand knowledge. We present a novel scheme for computing a sparse MPLS mesh to complement a baseline routing, and explore how the performance depends on the size of the partial mesh. Corresponding methods for robust OSPF optimization are discussed and a number of challenges are detailed.

Optical networks with wavelength routing are expected to form the backbone in the next generation wide area networks. The traffic grooming problem in optical networks is an optimization problem of aggregating sub-wavelength traffic demands onto lightpaths such that the required electronic switching capability, hence network cost, can be minimized. In this paper, we propose an over-provisioning scheme, which pre-allocates the spare capacity of lightpaths to dynamic subwavelength traffic demands such that the network can be more agile in responding to traffic increment requests. For the single-link case, the problem is a convex non-linear programming problem. We provide an exact algorithm to find the optimal solution. The problem with general topologies is then studied. We prove the NP-hardness in this case, and propose heuristics. Numerical results show our heuristics perform well.

Improving the safety of drivers and passengers by wirelessly exchanging information between vehicles represents a major driving force for the design of vehicular ad hoc networks. In a heavy loaded 802.11-based network, however, safety-related packets might collide frequently and cannot be decoded by a receiver, thus they might not be effective in increasing the safety level on the roads. In this paper, we propose to use transmit power control in order to reduce packet collisions, while taking into account the major design goal of vehicular ad hoc networks, i.e. increasing safety. While previous work has addressed the issue of power control primarily for optimizing network capacity and/or connectivity, the optimization criterion for improving safety has to be built upon the concept of fairness: a higher transmit power of a sender should not be selected at the expense of preventing other vehicles to send/receive their required amount of safety information. In this paper, we propose a fully distributed and localized algorithm called D-FPAV (distributed fair power adjustment for vehicular networks) for adaptive transmit power adjustment which is formally proven to achieve max-min fairness. Furthermore, we investigate the effectiveness and robustness of D-FPAV through extensive simulations based on a realistic highway scenario and different radio propagation models

Survivable service provisioning design has emerged as one of the most important issues in communication networks in recent years. In this work, we study survivable service provisioning with shared protection under a scheduled traffic model in wavelength convertible WDM optical mesh networks. In this model, a set of demands is given, and the setup time and teardown time of a demand are known in advance. Based on different protection schemes used, this problem has been formulated as integer linear programs with different optimization objectives and constraints in our previous work [8, 9]. The problem is shown to be NP- hard. We therefore study time efficient approaches to approximating the optimal solution to the problem. Our proposed approach is based on an iterative survivable routing (ISR) scheme that utilizes a capacity provision matrix and processes demands sequentially using different demand scheduling policies. The objective is to minimize the total network resources (e.g., number of wavelength-links) used by working paths and protection paths of a given set of demands while 100% restorability is guaranteed against any single failure. The proposed algorithm is evaluated against solutions obtained by integer linear programming. Our simulation results indicate that the proposed ISR algorithm is extremely time efficient while achieving excellent performance in terms of total network resources used. The impact of demand scheduling policies on the ISR algorithm is also studied.

For the evolving 3rd generation UMTS networks, there is a need for coverage and capacity enhancement with the flexibility of solutions. The target of this paper is to evaluate and propose a scheme for UMTS network upgrade, with the coexistence of repeaters and remote RF heads as solution to improve the network coverage and capacity. A step-by-step study of the UMTS network with repeaters and remote RF heads in a downlink limited system is presented. Results from dynamic system level simulations for circuit switched services under varying traffic distributions are evaluated. The simulation results indicate that, repeaters, in principle, are useful to enhance the network coverage. Proper tuning of repeater gain is essential. Nevertheless, additional gain on using repeaters in an already optimized pure macro network is limited. The results show that, at system level, networks enhanced with a mixture of repeaters and remote RF heads can carry significantly more traffic than the pure macro network. The antennas mounted below rooftops in such a network, yields considerable improvement in the signal-to-noise-plus-interference ratio (SNIR) of the common pilot channel (CPICH). Roughly 50% reduction in downlink power consumption was observed. Thus, during the initial UMTS network upgrade, repeaters could be added to the macro cells to enhance coverage. Further, some or all of the repeater locations can be reused and converted to remote RF heads when additional capacity requirement arises.

Currently the basic mobile network (NEMO) support protocol has inheritable characters of Mobile IPv6 (MIPv6), as well as MIPv6 has some fundamental problems such as header overhead and high location management cost. However, even with some proposed optimization techniques for NEMO, there is still space for improving the performance. In this paper, we address a novel NEMO extended support approach based on hierarchical Mobile IPv6 (HMIPv6) called H-NEMO, which is an extended protocol to minimize the signaling cost. To evaluate this scheme's performance, we also provide an efficient session-based stochastic paging model to evaluate the location update, packet delivery and paging cost. Compared with the basic NEMO support protocol, the results show that our new scheme can outperform the basic NEMO optimization with minimization of the average total cost. Especially as network size, user mobility and domain residence time grow, the optimization results are good as well.

Proactive self-configuration is indispensable for MANETs like Ubiquitous Sensor networks (USNs), as component devices of the network are usually exposed to natural or man-made disasters due to the hostile deployment and ad hoc nature of the USNs. network State Beacons (NSBs) are exchanged among the key nodes of the network for crucial and effective monitoring of the network for steady state operation. The Rate of Beacon Exchange (FE) and its contents, define the time and nature of the proactive action. Therefore it is very important to optimize these parameters to tune the functional response of the USN. This paper presents a novel FE selection model based on load-adaptive optimization of beacon exchange rate for monitoring and proactively reconfiguring the network. The results confirm the improved throughput while maintaining QoS with a little overhead control traffic.

We discuss a novel framework for integrated sensing and resource management in a distributed intelligent sensor network with sensor nodes whose useful active lifetime is significantly shorter than the required lifetime of the sensor system. Past sensor network research has focused on security and communication, but largely ignored the overall dynamic resource management issue of such distributed systems. Our contribution is in integrated control optimization and resource management algorithms to ensure proper functioning of distributed sensors in extremely limited bandwidth, power, and storage. In this paper, we present a novel genetic algorithm for real-time system control and resource management that handles multiple conflicting objectives and constraints in the distributed system. Our framework is suitable for dynamic environments where the desired system performance and resource usage changes dynamically while being constrained by limited amount of resources.

The commercial mobile wireless industry (e.g. cellular) is currently in the act of deploying P generation technologies. While very successful over the last two decades, operators of these systems are under competitive pressure from new entrants in the mobile and fixed wireless spaces that have the potential to erode their margins by providing alternative access technologies and services. Two possible paths for incumbent operators to follow in fending off the new competition are to reduce so-called "Operational Expenditures" ("OpEx") and to add flexibility to their, network operations in an attempt to rapidly experiment with new technologies and business models. Both paths require the management of complexity in network architecture and operations, and the automation of as much maintenance and operational activity as possible. This paper explores the application of autonomic computing concepts in addressing these challenges.

A model based on mixed-integer network optimization is developed and applied to the Aguas Group drinking water production and main distribution system. The four sanitary companies owned by the group, which supply nearly all Santiago, Chile, with drinking water, possess an intricate network of hydrological sources, water treatment plants, wells, pipelines and elevation plants, providing profuse alternatives to supply their clients. The Production and Main Distribution optimization Model (MOPYT) searches for the global optimal provision scheme from an operational costs standpoint, specifically electricity, chemical inputs and extra labour expenses. The model provides weekly benchmarks for the diverse productive quarters. It has also been used for budgetary exercises planned for water demand forecasts. MOPYT has been particularly beneficial for generating consensus among complementary operational areas such as production and main distribution, achieving global costs efficiency.
