To solve the problem of real-time and regional identification in an intelligent control classroom, both edge and extended moment invariants are employed in this paper. By computing and visually analysing the moment invariants from a classroom video image, a set of 10-dimensional edge invariant moments is chosen, which is stable, practical and provides adequate real-time performance. The patternrecognition method of a support vector machine is used to distinguish the humans from the objects in the classroom image. Experimental results are provided to show that this group of moments achieves excellent results, and the recognition rate can reach 99.81%.

The application of machine vision to industrial robots is a hot topic in robot research nowadays. A welding robot with machine vision had been developed, which is convenient and flexible to reach the welding point with six degrees-of-freedom (DOF) manipulator, while the singularity of its movement trail is prevented, and the stability of the mechanism had been fully guaranteed. As the precise industry camera can capture the optical feature of the workpiece to reflect in the camera's CCD lens, the workpiece is identified and located through a visual patternrecognition algorithm based on gray scale processing, on the gradient direction of edge pixel or on geometric element so that high-speed visual acquisition, image preprocessing, feature extraction and recognition, target location are integrated and hardware processing power is improved. Another task is to plan control strategy of control system, and the upper computer software is programmed in order that multi-axis motion trajectory is optimized and servo control is accomplished. Finally, prototype was developed and validation experiments show that the welding robot has high stability, high efficiency, high precision, even if welding joints are random and workpiece contour is irregular.

Among all cancers, lung and breast can be attributed to a large number of deaths worldwide. Given the various inconveniences and risks associated with traditional diagnostic methods, efficient non-invasive detection approaches using computerized methods are needed. With recent advances in medical biometrics, particularly focusing on the analysis of facial and tongue images to detect various diseases, there is a lack of studies in tongue sub-lingual veins. Therefore, this paper will analyze tongue sub-lingual veins in order to distinguish those that are healthy from those that have cancer (either lung or breast). Tongue sub-lingual veins are first captured using a uniquely designed device. Segmentation is then carried out to separate the vein foreground pixels from its background. This facilitates feature extraction in the form of color and geometry. As for the last step, classification is performed. Experimental results on a dataset consisting of 628 healthy samples, 81 samples with lung cancer, and 147 with breast cancer yielded an average accuracy of 82.07% at healthy vs. lung cancer, and 79.23% at healthy vs. breast cancer, proving the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Since the candlestick patterns were mined, there is a contentious dispute on whether the candlestick patterns have predictive power in academia. To help resolve the debate, this paper uses the data mining methods of patternrecognition, pattern clustering and pattern knowledge mining to research the predictive power of candlestick patterns. In addition, we propose the similarity match model and nearest neighbor-clustering algorithm to solve the problem of similarity match and clustering of candlestick series, respectively. The experiment includes testing the predictive power of the Morning Star pattern and Evening Star pattern with the testing dataset of the candlestick series data of Shanghai 180 index component stocks over the latest 10 years. Experimental results show that (1) There have some spurious patterns in the existing candlestick patterns. However, after further classification of a spurious pattern based on its shape feature, those patterns with special shapes still have predictive power. (2) Some patterns do have the predictive power. (3) As there is no precise mathematical definition to describe the existing patterns' predictive power, it is essential to give the mathematical formula for improving the candlestick patterns' prediction performance.
