There has been growing interest in the development of new approaches and technologies for bridging the human-computer barrier. Hand gesture recognition is considered as an interaction technique having potential to communicate with machines. Human computer interaction (HCI) was never an easy task and lots of approaches are available to build such systems. Hand gesture recognition (HGR) using wearable data glove provides a solution to build a HCI system, but lags in terms of its computational time and poor interface. pattern matching is one more solution which uses vision based techniques and provides strong interface to build HCI systems. But again, it requires complex algorithms which takes lots of computational time and hence limits its use in real time HCI applications. In this paper, we presented an eccentric approach for hand gesture recognition which is simple, fast and user independent and can be used to develop real time HCI applications. Based on proposed algorithm we built a system for Indian Sign Language recognition which converts Indian Sign numbers into text. The algorithm first captures the image of single handed gesture of speech/hearing impaired person using simple webcam and then using our proposed algorithm it classifies the gesture into its appropriate class. It uses simple logical conditions for gesture classification which make its use in real time HCI applications.

Number of strategies have been deployed to make Wheeled Mobile Robots (WMRs) independent or with limited dependence on human assistance/intervention. In order to enhance their mobility, improvements have been made in their pattern recognition and path planning strategies. Vision-based approach is preferred over stereopsis-based, laser-range finders and GPS-based approaches on account of higher resolution and longer ranges. Vision-Based Wheeled Mobile Robot (VB-WMR) uses an active vision system where the observer is in motion. The goal of this project is to provide a novel algorithm aimed to detect and recognize direction indicators on sign boards placed on the course of the WMR. Here visual processing is devoted to noting the salient components like the edges of patterns on sign boards rather than processing the entire image. The proposed algorithm is based on the beamlet theory, which retains directional information besides the location and scale and performs well under noisy conditions. The developed algorithm in MATLAB is later to be incorporated with the VB-WMR. © 2014 IEEE.

Ultrasonic Testing is the widely used NDT technique for flaw detection in thick walled weldments. It is an indirect technique and the signals are to be analyzed in order to characterize the flaw. Manual interpretation of these signals is subjective in nature and is dependent on the expertise of the individual. Hence the paradigm has shifted to automated signal analysis. In this paper a successful attempt has been made to develop a pattern among the flaws of same type without using Artificial Neural Networks. Here, the signals are analyzed with Stockwell transform and the pattern is determined. Also quantitative characterization is done with mean, standard deviation, root mean square value, peak to rms ratio. © 2014 IEEE.

By comparing the similarity of their contour information, hybrid photoelectric joint transform correlator (JTC) is used to recognize the specific target. An effective method to increase the recognition rate is to extract the contour information of target and template and decrease the noise interference in image background. The principle of joint transform correlator is given in this paper. To increase the recognizing rate, a mask algorithm is presented, with which the coordinate of the correlation peaks can be located precisely. Before the mask algorithm, edge extraction with Robert operator is carried out to enhance the target contour information and reduce the background noise. Amounts of experiments prove the mask algorithm can locate the correlation peaks precisely. As an example, an experimental result is given with a car as the detected target. The coordinate of this car is (362, 438). Experimental results confirm the feasibility and effectiveness of the mask algorithm.

Over the last ten years, considerable progress has been made on the new hand-based biometric recognition, such as palmprint and hand vein. During this period, it has been proved that Finger-Knuckle-Print (FKP) can be used as a biometric identifier. In this paper, we present an effective FKP identification method based on Local Binary pattern (LBP), whose idea is to divide the region of interest (ROT) of FKP into a set of sub-image blocks, which can be applied to extract the local features of the FKP. After that, LBP histograms of image blocks in a FKP ROT image are connected together to build the feature vector of the FKP ROT image. In the match stage, histogram intersection distance is applied as the similarity measurement between sample and template. Experimental results conducted on a database of 165 persons (4 fingers per person) show that the proposed method is effective.

This paper presents a novel image abstraction tech- nique, the deceived bilateral filter (DBF). The DBF combines border sharpening with simplification of homogeneous regions to achieve moderate de-blurring and colour emphasis. The aim of the DBF is to remove noise of colour and shape descriptors (histograms and contours) of the blobs corresponding to football players. The experiment implemented for this paper consists in an unsupervised histogram based classification of the blobs based on the team of the football players aiming to evaluate histogram denoising. The results show an average classification success rate improvement of 11%. © 2014 IEEE.

Activity recognition aims at modeling the occupants’ behavior by analyzing the sensor data collected from the smart environment. Though most of the activity recognition systems use supervised learning techniques for building such models there is a shift towards the unsupervised learning paradigm as the process of annotating and labeling the data is prone to errors. This paper proposes an Event pattern Activity Modeling Framework (EPAM) to identify the occupant activity pattern from the sensor data by using an unsupervised machine learning approach and further analysis is done with a knowledge driven approach. In the context of smart environments, an activity is considered as a sequence of events that are generated continuously from the sensor data. The segmentation algorithm proposed in EPAM is used to identify appropriate event patterns for an activity that are then grouped together using a pattern clustering algorithm that presents a hierarchy of activities. The set of activities of the occupant, observed in a smart environment is not always sequential but is highly interleaved and discontinuous. The proposed algorithm accommodates this valid factor by an innovative use of the Jaro Winkler similarity measure. The hierarchy of activity generated by the pattern clustering approach is used for activity modeling. Ontology based activity modeling is preferred over other modeling techniques because of its unified modeling, representation and semantically clear reasoning. The experimentalresults show that the proposed EPAM framework of segmentation, pattern clustering and ontological modeling is efficient and more effective than the existing approach of activity modeling. © Springer India 2014.

Mixed expression is more in line with people's daily perfromance than basic *** paper proposed a facial expression recognition method that recognizes and analyze mixed expressions. In this method, Gabor phase and local binary patterns were combined into GPLBP model to obtain the expression features and the model contained good robustness of light. Compressed sense and subjection degree function were adopted to identify the ingredients of main basic expressions in the mixed expression the ratio of each kind of basic expression. Experimental results of comparison respectively to Gabor-SVM and AAM-SVM verified that the proposed method could not only identify and analyze the mixed expression effectively but also recognize the basic expression precisely. © (2014) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.
