Achieving complete and accurate cyber situation awareness (SA) is crucial for security analysts to make right decisions. To facilitate cyber SA, existing security tools, algorithms, and techniques like attack graph, should be integrated together to extract the most critical information and synthesize knowledge from different areas. Based on existing theories of situation awareness, a cyber SA model and an SKRM (situation Knowledge Reference Model) model are constructed to enhance the coupling of current techniques to situation awareness to enable security analysts' effective analysis of complex cyber-security problems.

This paper presents a cognitive sensing framework that enables tracking and identification of individuals' behavioral biometrics through thermal, pressure, photonic, acoustic, and laser sensors. Besides low cost, those sensors can produce sparse behavioral biometric data that can be analyzed quickly. To achieve this goal, we will develop: (1) a set of cognitive capabilities for sensing systems, such as spatial, data, context, and group awareness;(2) a multi-agent architecture for system operation and adaptation that enables heterogeneous sensors to achieve consensus in behavior analysis;and (3) a set of tools for situation understanding, cross-layer adaptation, and behavior based collaboration. The developed computing infrastructure will enable research activities about behavioral biometrics based on low-cost, low-power, distributed platforms with a variety of sensing modalities. The developed cognitive sensing intelligence has great potentials to cope with the technical challenges in behavioral biometrics caused by long distances and crowded scenes.

Human activity refers to a collection of motions and actions from either an individual or a group. Human activity study aims to recognize subjects' behavioral patterns and understand their situations. Human activity analysis and situation perception can be used to enhance the performance of various applications ranging from healthcare to surveillance and energy efficient buildings, etc. This paper presents a space encoding based framework for human activity information acquisition/analysis and situation perception. The novelties of this paper include: 1) efficient activity information acquisition based on a space encoding method;2) reliable human activity representation based on stable statistical distributions;3) effective activity-to-situation correlation based on data learning methods. Both simulations and experiments are performed by using pressure sensors deployed on the floor. The preliminary results have demonstrated the advantages of the proposed method.

While there is an extensive body of research available in understanding the spatiotemporal eventualities of reality, we still face noticeable confusion in conceptualization of such basic notions like states, events, and actions. This is becoming increasingly evident when one has to deal with dynamic systems, especially systems that are subject of interest in situation awareness, situation control, and real-time decision support. The question is not only in the existence of terminological discrepancies across different domains, but more importantly, conceptual inconsistencies. In this paper we will review the metaphysical studies of states, events and actions prevailing in the modern philosophy and show what kind of new requirements are set for understanding these concepts in situation Management. We will outline a conceptualization framework for future research in understanding the role and inter-dependencies among situations, events and actions.

Cyber weapons are becoming autonomous intelligent agents with considerable autonomy and planning ability. The examples of this kind of weapons already exist and have been used. This makes situation awareness a key factor of safety of cyber weapons. There are risks of wrong behavior of such weapons caused by the following two factors: misunderstanding of commands, misinterpretation of situation. The present paper analyses some known cases of misbehavior of cyber weapons and predicts the future threats of this kind. The more intelligent software becomes the more difficult will be to control it. When designing and developing new cyber weapons, one has to pay special attention to supporting situation awareness of the weapons and keeping appropriate control over the weapons under any circumstances.

A technique using the Choquet integral will be investigated that will monitor the environment by sampling current utility values of criteria and aggregate this information to provide a means to determine the most suitable surface naval asset to be re-deployed in order to accomplish an unscheduled mission. This paper will present promising initial findings which supports the claim that the Choquet integral can be used to represent expert knowledge in the situation where the criteria are dependent. The results will be applied to the ranking of destroyers for re-deployment.

Threat evaluation is concerned with estimating the level of threat posed by enemy units to one's own assets. This is an impact analysis problem which is important to address for supporting operators in achieving situation awareness. Due to the risky and complex nature of the threat evaluation tasks, it is imperative that the operators are supported by computerized systems as well as that they are an integral part of the threat evaluation process. To do so, the operators have to understand and be able to provide their input to the process, hence the need to make the threat evaluation process transparent to the operators. In order to implement a transparent threat evaluation support system, we argue that the process of visual analytics should provide valuable guidance. In this paper we suggest a model for using visual analytics in a threat evaluation context. We also investigate the potential of recognized threat evaluation models to be used within a visual analytics context.

This paper gives a brief overview of challenges in designing cognitive architectures for Learning from Demonstration. By investigating features and functionality of some related architectures, we propose a modular architecture particularly suited for sequential learning high-level representations of behaviors. We head towards designing and implementing goal based imitation learning that not only allows the robot to learn necessary conditions for executing particular behaviors, but also to understand the intents of the tutor and reproduce the same behaviors accordingly.

Due to the growing size and complexity of modern grids, power system operators have to deal with several challenges to maintain the reliability of the electrical supply. Developing and maintaining a sufficient situation awareness is a key element in preserving this reliability. However, because numerous factors govern its formation in a power system control center, this can be a very complicated process. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate the impact of insufficient situation awareness on power systems operational reliability and provide an overview of best practices in supporting human operators. It first identifies the main sources of inadequate situation awareness in a control room, and then presents its impact on operational decision-making. Several measures for dealing with the problems related to situation awareness are discussed and their applicability to power systems is illustrated.
