What is meant by Computation with Information Described in Natural Language, or NL-Computation, for short? Does NL-Computation constitute a new frontier in computation? Do existing bivalent-logic-based approaches to natural language processing provide a basis for NL-Computation? What are the basic concepts and ideas which underlie NL-Computation? These are some of the issues which are addressed in the following. What is computation with information described in natural language? Here are simple examples. I am planning to drive from Berkeley to Santa Barbara, with stopover for lunch in Monterey. It is about 10 am. It will probably take me about two hours to get to Monterey and about an hour to have lunch. From Monterey, it will probably take me about five hours to get to Santa Barbara. What is the probability that I will arrive in Santa Barbara before about six pm? Another simple example: A box contains about twenty balls of various sizes. Most are large. What is the number of small balls? What is the probability that a ball drawn at random is neither small nor large? Another example: A function, f, from reals to reals is described as: If X is small then Y is small;if X is medium then Y is large;if X is large then Y is small. What is the maximum of f? Another example: Usually the temperature is not very low, and usually the temperature is not very high. What is the average temperature? Another example: Usually most United Airlines flights from San Francisco leave on time. What is the probability that my flight will be delayed? Computation with information described in natural language is closely related to computing with Words. NL-Computation is of intrinsic importance because much of human knowledge is described in natural language. This is particularly true in such fields as economics, data mining, systems engineering, risk assessment and emergency management. It is safe to predict that as we move further into the age of machine intelligence and mechanized decision

This paper presents a novel hybrid optical burst/circuit switched (OBCS) ingress edge router solution towards ubiquitous photonic Grid networking. It is based on the deployment of Grid application-aware packet classification and burst aggregation algorithms as well as agile and intelligent optical resource allocation. The proposed solution utilises a generic and highly scalable multi-dimension classification mechanism able to provide wire-speed classification at high bit rates up to 40 Gbps. The mechanism is responsible for per application switching (OBS/OCS) service selection and Grid Differentiated Service (GridDiffServ) provisioning. A CoS-Traffic-Time-LEngth-Service-oriented aSembly ((COSTLESS)-L-2) algorithm has been proposed to smooth the incoming Grid traffic and provide some CoS differentiation and initial results are presented. An agile optical data transmission mechanism has been also implemented to map Grid traffic asynchronously into optical bursts or wavelength channels (data plane) based on user/application-specific requirements. Furthermore an optical burst Ethernet switched (OBES) transport mechanism has been implemented to transport out-of-band control plane signalling information.

In this article, a neural network model is presented for forecasting the average speed values at highway traffic detectors locations using the Fuzzy ARTMAP theory. The performance of the model is measured by the deviation between the speed values provided by the loop detectors and the predicted speed values. Different Fuzzy ARTMAP configuration cases are analysed in their training and testing phases. Some ad-hoc mechanisms added to the basic Fuzzy ARTMAP structure are also described to improve the entire model performance. The achieved results make this model suitable for being implemented on advanced traffic management systems (ATMS) and advanced traveller information system (ATIS).

We present a distributed control architecture for the integration of an experimental robotic cell with 3D visual servoing. This architecture allows us to control a 6 DOF robot in hard Real-Time and the global experimental system in soft Real-Time. We have developed distributed applications, based on this architecture, for the robot control (whose characteristics permit us to teleoperate the robot), the 3D dataacquisition and for an advanced simulation and visualization. These applications, together with the algorithms developed by our computer vision research group, allow a full intelligent robotic manipulation in complex scenes to be made. This can be useful in manufacturing environments where an automated piece manipulation is necessary.
This paper proposes a multi-feature constrained method (MFC) to acquire co-referent relations from large-scale Chinese corpora. The MFC has two phases: candidate relations extraction and verification. The extraction p...

Businesses collect and keep large volumes of customer data as part of their processes. Analysis of this data by business users often leads to discovery of valuable patterns and trends that otherwise would go unnoticed and that can lead to prioritization of decisions on future investments. The majority of tools currently available to business users are typically limited to computing summary statistics, simple visualization and reporting of data. More complex tools that could offer possible explanations for observations, discover knowledge, or allow making predictions are usually aimed at an academic audience or at users who are highly trained in analytics. However, it is business users with little experience in analytics who require access to tools that allow them to easily model customer behavior and build future scenarios. In this paper we present a tool we developed for business users to perform advanced analysis on customer data

Decision support systems have been utilised since 1960, providing physicians with fast and accurate means towards more accurate diagnoses, increased tolerance when handling missing or incomplete data. In this paper an integrated intelligent framework has been developed for the analysis/diagnosis of wireless capsule endoscopic images. The proposed system extracts texture features from the texture spectra in the chromatic and achromatic domains for a selected region of interest from each colour component histogram of images and utilises an advanced neural network in a multiple classifier scheme. The preliminary test results support the feasibility of the proposed methodology

This paper deals with the querying of possibilistic relational databases, by means of generalized yes/no queries whose form is: "to what extent is it possible and certain that the answer to Q satisfies property P". Here, we consider cardinality-based generalized yes/no queries (in this case, property P is about cardinality) for which a processing technique is proposed, which avoids computing all the worlds attached to the possibilistic database
