With the unceasing increase of the mobile data traffic, network operators are forced to improve the performance of their networks. The traffic explosion is intensified by the recent deployment of Long Term Evolution (LTE) networks. However, operators cannot opt for deploying more cells, as this will increase their financial investments. Operators are seeking for mobile technologies with higher spectral efficiency in bit/s/Hz, cloud-based intelligent architecture, etc. The operators' requirements are under investigation by 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) to develop the next mobile generation (5G), which should match the technical requirements and economic feasibility. The road to 5G is still not clear. Therefore, telecom players marked a next step towards 5G by issuing new standard version "Release 13", referred by experts as LTE-advanced Pro or '4.5G'. In this paper, we discuss the main characteristics of this new release and the planned roadmap to reach the final target of 5G.

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) have emerged as interesting topic in the research community due to its manifold applications. One of the main challenges of this field is the energy consumption of the nodes, which typically is quite restricted due to the required lifetime of such WSNs. To solve that problem several energy-saving MAC protocols have been developed so far. One of them recently presented by the authors is the so-called SmartMAC as an extension to the ieee802.15.4 standard. In this paper, we present the implementation details of the porting of the SmartMAC protocol to the discrete event network simulator NS3. We develop this module for NS3 to simulate the performance, multi node execution, and multi node configuration. Along with this model, we also present an energy model for the evaluation of the energy consumption. The current implementation in NS3 is based on the LR-WPAN (Low-Rate Wireless Personal Area Networks) as specified by the ieee802.15.4 (2006) standard. The simulation results show that the SmartMAC with its sleep and wake-up mechanisms for the transceivers, is significantly more efficient than the current NS3 MAC (Medium Access Control) scheme.

In conventional power systems, client-server architecture and centralized control are adopted for data acquisition and supervisory control, and the speed of message transmission and the fault responses is slow. In contrast, various types of distributed energy resources (DERs) with different characteristics and of different capacities exist in a microgrid system, and client-server architecture and centralized control are inadequate for control and operation purpose. In this study, an example microgrid system with a multi-agent system which complies with FIPA (Foundation for intelligent Physical Agents) standard is proposed and built using MATLAB/Simulink and Java Agent Development Framework (JADE). The operations of and among the intelligent electronic devices (IEDs), circuit breakers (CBs), calculation agent and CB agents in the example microgrid system for fault protection coordination under both normal and short-circuit fault conditions are analyzed and discussed. The results demonstrate that protection coordination can be correctly planned and control actions can be executed properly by the multi-agent system in the microgrid system, and the multi-agent system can isolate the fault area and protect the microgrid system in real time under varies conditions.

Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) is a 2.4 GHz wireless technology which has been widely adopted in consumer devices. Available in most modern smartphones, it is a popular choice for connecting battery powered devices like sensors or beacons to mobile handsets. A low energy consumption, while being beneficial for all BLE applications, becomes a key requirement for applications containing larger numbers of BLE devices like smart home sensors or beacons in indoor localization due to the high cost of battery replacement. In this paper, we investigate the energy consumption of different BLE System on Chips (SoCs) which provide the foundation to most BLE devices. Based on extensive measurements, we present a vendor-independent model for BLE power consumption which allows energy consumption prediction from key design parameters. This helps in the tradeoff between engergy consumption and BLE performance. We concentrate on advertising mode which governs the energy consumption in popular applications like beacons.

Internet of Things aims at integrating networked information systems to real world entities. It connects objects such as smart phones, sensors, Light Emitting Diodes (LED) displays, vehicles through the internet allowing them to interact and exchange information among themselves. In today's times IoT has found its application in practically every walk of life and supply chain management is no exception. At present, supply chains are becoming increasingly complex, where suppliers and customers stretch between various countries and continents. The biggest problem faced by manufacturers is to optimize supply chain performance and reduce operational costs over such large geographical stretches. IoT acts as a solution to this problem as it facilitates the use of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) in order to interconnect all the various actors in a supply chain. This humongous network of interconnected devices generate massive amounts of data which is difficult to store and process. Cloud computing here plays a role of a facilitator and provides great help in addressing challenges related to storage and processing capabilities. In this paper, we present an intelligent Supply Chain Management System (ISCMS) that benefits from the amalgamation of IoT and Cloud and provides real time monitoring, tracking and managing of goods from the perspective of a supplier, customer and shipper. We also propose an algorithm that depicts the working of our system. The proposed intelligent Supply Chain Management System along with the algorithm are simulated using the iFogSim simulator. To this end, we illustrate the working of our proposed system along with the simulated results.

In this contribution a new method for indoor localization is proposed and investigated, which is based on low cost Bluetooth Low Energy systems. The experiments described in this paper make use of commercially available low cost Bluetooth sensor systems. The presented method is based on field strength measurements of the received signals. Making use of the path loss model a reliable mapping procedure between measured RSSI values and distance has been established. Since RSSI measurements are subject to noise, reflections, multipath fading and other effects the obtained values can deviate considerably from the expected ones. In order to minimize these effects a sophisticated post processing of the RSSI values has been added to the localization procedure, which is performed in real time. Furthermore a novel calibration procedure is carried out during the initialization phase of the system which considerably improved the mapping accuracy between RSSI values and distance. Compared to established RSSI-based localization methods the localization accuracy could be significantly improved by applying the proposed methods. This is verified by measurements using an experimental setup. In contrast to many existing RSSI-based localization approaches, the proposed method can be considered as a remarkable improvement for low cost, low power and easy to apply indoor localization.

IPv6 over resource-constrained devices (6Lo) emerged as a de-facto standard for the Internet of Things (IoT) applications especially in home and building automation systems. We provide results of an investigation of the applicability of 6LoWPAN with RPL mesh networks for home and building automation use cases. The proper selection of Trickle parameters and neighbor reachable time-outs is important in the RPL protocol suite to respond efficiently to any path failure. These parameters were analyzed in the context of energy consumption w.r.t the number of control packets. The measurements were performed in an Automated Physical Testbeds (APTB). The results match the recommendation by RFC 7733 for selecting various parameters of RPL protocol suite. This paper shows the relationship between various RPL parameters and control traffic overhead during network rebuild. Comparative measurement results with Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) in this work showed that 6Lo with RPL outperformed BLE in this use case with less control traffic overheads.

The main motivation behind the 6LoWPAN standard is that every sensor node has to be connected to Internet and participate in Internet of Things (IoT). The RFC 6775 provides optimized Neighbor Discovery (ND) procedure which is supposedly provides better performance when compared to traditional ICMPv6 neighbor discovery process. The main optimization is obtained due to reduced multicast messages host initiated router interactions that support both sleeping nodes and lesser time spent in message transmission. This work presents the implementation details of important features in this optimized ND process. This work is done in the form of an NS3 model where in ICMPv6 model is implemented considering the ND optimizations. The simulation results are compared against the performance of basic ND process for IPv6 described in RFC 4861. Our results show that optimized ND for 6LoWPAN reduces the exchange of control messages by 50 to 70 percent.

To facilitate routine analysis and to improve the reproducibility of the results, next-generation sequencing analysis requires intuitive, efficient and integrated data processing pipelines. Here, we present RUbioSeq+, a multiplatform application that incorporates a suite of automated and parallelized workflows to analyse NGS data. The software supports DNA-seq (singlenucleotide and copy number variation analyses) as well as for bisulfite-seq and ChIP-seq workflows. RUbioSeq+ supports parallelized and multithreaded execution, and its interactive graphical user interface facilitates its use by both biomedical researchers and bioinformaticians. Results generated by our software have been experimentally validated and accepted for publication. The multimedia big data in multimedia sensing and other IoT (Internet of Things) systems are high-volume, real-time, dynamic and heterogeneous. These characteristics lead to new challenges of data security. When computation and power resources in some IoT nodes are very scarce, these challenges become more serious that complex data security process on multimedia data is restricted by the aforementioned limited resources. Hence, the confidentiality of multimedia big data under resources constraints is investigated in this paper. Firstly, the growth trend of data volume compared with computational resources is discussed, and an analysis model for multimedia data encryption optimization is proposed. Secondly, a general-purpose lightweight speed tunable video encryption scheme is introduced. Thirdly, a series of intelligent selective encryption control models are proposed. Fourthly, the performance of proposed schemes is evaluated by experimental analyses and proves that schemes are effective enough to support real-time encryption of multimedia big data. Additionally, in the age of big data and cloud computing, the aforementioned analysis method can also be applied to other systems with limited resources.
