In the last years, ICT-based Remote Patients' Monitoring (RPM) programmes are being developed to address the continuously increasing socioeconomic impact of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). ICT-based RPM assures the automatic, regular collection of multivariate time series of patient's data. These can be profitably used to assess patient's health status and detect the onset of disease's exacerbations. This paper presents an approach to suitably represent and analyze the temporal data acquired during COPD patients' tele-monitoring so as to extend usual methods based on e-diary cards. The approach relies on Temporal Abstractions (TA) to extract significant information about disease's trends and progression. In particular, the paper describes the application of TA to identify relevant patterns and episodes that are, then, used to obtain a global picture of patient's conditions. The global picture mainly consists of TA-based qualitative and quantitative features that express: (i) a characterization of disease's course in the most recent period;(ii) a summarization of the global disease evolution based on the most frequent pattern;and (ii) a profiling of the patient, based on anamnesis data combined with a summary of disease progression. The paper focuses on the description of the extracted features and discusses their significance and relevance to the problem at hand. Further work will focus on the development of intelligent applications able to recognize and classify the extracted information.

Scalable, distributed reactive systems require a scalable control infrastructure. Being able to model such an infrastructure is a prerequisite for putting it into place. In current systems, finite state machine based approaches are prevailing. They are, however, limited by their nature and hamper further improvements. Extensions like statecharts have emerged to alleviate those shortcomings. Despite all this work, the proposed improvements do not live up to the requirements of continuously operating distributed systems. Therefore we look for alternatives that break with the underlying state-based model. Workflow systems recently became mature enough to be considered for use cases going beyond small-scale business applications. The concept on which they build is promising to scale to large systems. This paper compares various modeling technologies using the real-world scenario of distributed data acquisition systems as we find them in currently operating high-energy physics installations at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. The outcome of our qualitative evaluation will show that current finite state machine compared to workflow based approaches have a bigger gap between specification and executed processes. Consequently workflow based approaches are better suited for the use case at hand and require less custom software extensions to reduce the remaining gap.

The modelling of the integration of various cognitive skills and modalities requires complex and computationally intensive algorithms running in parallel while controlling high performance systems. The distribution of processing across many computers has certainly advanced our software ecosystem and opened up research to new possibilities. While this was an essential move, we are aspiring to augment the field of cognitive robotics by providing Aquila 2.0, a novel hi-performance software architecture utilising cross-platform, heterogeneous CPU-GPU modules loosely coupled with GUIs used for module management and data visualisation.

Due to the longer pulse length of the NSTX-U device, a significant portion of the CAMAC equipment used for data acquisition and control will be supplanted with instrumentation and control (I&C) technologies such as CompactPCI and PXI Express. The Timing and Synchronization System (T&S) is used to synchronize data acquisition and control throughout the experimental complex. A non-CAMAC solution is needed to support the new and upgraded I&C systems for NSTX-U. An instrumentation-bus-agnostic, FPGA-based T&S system is under development. The primary component is the Reconfigurable Timing Unit (RTU). The RTU has been designed to be fully compatible with NTSX's original T&S. The RTU is the 3rd NSTX-designed FPGA-based timing device. Unlike its predecessors, the RTU will rely on commercial products: LabVIEW software and sbRIO hardware, both from National Instruments. Our experience in product development, integration with the NSTX-U computing and control environment, and timing performance will be presented. © 2013 ieee.

""Monitoring the dynamic power utilization of enterprise computer servers in large-scale data centers is a non-trivial undertaking. Real-time power monitoring is essential for power management and intelligent cooling provisioning and is motivated by the fact that the energy costs for many classes of servers now exceeds the initial hardware costs for the servers. The conventional approach for dynamic power monitoring requires installing hardware Power Distribution Units (PDUs) for all the servers in a datacenter, which is tedious and costly when newer data centers house up to thousands of servers. PDUs require more space in densely cramped data centers, require disruption of business-critical servers (in existing data centers) for attachment to the PDUs, and diminishes overall data center reliability (additional layer of hardware in series with the servers that can degrade in service). Oracle has introduced an innovation called intelligent Power Monitoring (IPM), which provides accurate, real-time power utilization for servers as a function of customer load fluctuations, fan speed variations, dynamic reconfiguration events under virtualization tiers, failover events for redundant power supplies, and during times when power management features in the CPUs are performing power-capping and/or thermal-capping roles.""

This paper was linked to the requirement of coal mine information construction, firstly, on the basis of heterogeneous data environment of the coal mine to sort out, induction, classification, we established an integrated model from the coal underlying data to the application layer, which includes 4 layers: data acquisition layer, data source layer, intermediate interface layer, application layer. The model focused on the underlying data integration and intermediate interface layer data integration, put forward a design idea, which includes mine underlying data integration based on OPC interface and intermediate interface layer based on virtual database and data warehouse, the intermediate interface layer has 4 layers, they are virtual database sub-layer, the data warehouse sub-layer, meta-database sub-layer and service management sub-layer. The coal comprehensive integrated model provides a unified data access platform for integrated data query, 3D visualization integration, Mine Safety forecast and intelligent decision.

With the advent of new more capable technologies and greater availability of sensing technologies the amount of sensor data available for creating situation awareness is also increasing in an exponential rate. Although technology has provided us with means to have access to more data, the processing methodology has not been able to keep up with that pace. Nature has provided humans and other animals with great means to handle this issue - we do not pay attention to the data that has no relevance to us at a given moment in a given situation. However, provided we observe relevant cues (e.g. danger) to indicate that the situation may be changing or that an entity is of interest we immediately start paying attention, collecting additional detailed information of the phenomena and storing that information for future use. Similar approach would be useful also with modern distributed data acquisition systems catering for our situational information needs - there is no need to process all available data from all sources if the data is not relevant at a given moment in a given situation. The paper presents a middleware architecture where interaction mediators take care of delivering only the relevant data to the information consumers and validating that the delivered data satisfies data consumer requirements. The architecture caters for the dynamic nature of sensing systems, being able to cope with situations where sensing nodes are mobile, removed from or added to the system and handling dynamic data requests while validating the data at run time. The operation of the architecture is demonstrated in a simulated asymmetric threat detection scenario. The results of the simulation show that the presented architecture makes it possible to reduce requirements for bandwidth and computation power as only relevant information is delivered to the data fusion process.

Internet is a powerful source of information. However, some of the information that is available in the Internet, cannot be shown to every type of public. For instance, pornography is not desirable to be shown to children. To this end, several algorithms for text filtering have been proposed that employ a Vector Space Model representation of the webpages. Nevertheless, these type of filters can be surpassed using different attacks. In this paper, we present the first adult content filtering tool that employs compression algorithms to represent data that is resilient to these attacks. We show that this approach enhances the results of classic VSM models. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Flexible manufacturing systems as complex and stochastic environments require the development of innovative, intelligent control architectures for supporting more flexibility, agility and re-configurability. Distributed manufacturing control system addresses this challenge by introducing an adaptive production control approach and is supported by the presence of autonomous control units which are cooperating with each other. The majority of the current distributed control systems, till now suffer from lack of flexibility and agility when the product verity is high or the product volume is low, and also there is not reconfigure in case of ad-hoc events. To overcome these limitations, a kind of drawback of an excessive dependence on up-to-date information about the products and other elements which move within the system is essential. To this end, RFID as a new emerging technology was introduced which uses radio-frequency waves to transfer data between a reader and movable item for identification, tracking and categorization purpose. This study discusses the architecture devised to deploy RFID-enabled distributed control and monitoring system by means of a set of agents that are responsible for the realization of different control and monitoring tasks and cooperating with each other to enhance agility, flexibility and re-configurability of manufacturing system. The RFID-enabled distributed control and monitoring system has been explored using a flexible manufacturing system (EMU-CIM lab) to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed architecture successfully. © 2013 ieee.

The wireless sensor network (WSN) is an important element on many advanced, energy efficient data acquisition (DAQ), and control systems. Sleep/wake-up scheduling and network overhead are some of the major burdens to achieve energy efficient WSNs. In this paper, an energy efficient communication algorithm is proposed for smart home sensor networks. The proposed approach targets the wasted energy during the idle listening, collision, and overhearing processes. A three-tier Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol has been developed to minimize the total energy consumption of the network. The new protocol reduces the total energy requirement by each node, facilitates confirmed communication for steady traffic, and gives adaptive control during varying traffic load. Overall, the proposed MAC protocol shows better performance than conventional WSN protocols.
