This paper presents a framework for determining the direction of human gaze with an active multi-camera system. A fixed 3D depth sensor is employed in order to determine the position of the human face in 3D space and its features, like the eyes. Then an active pan-tilt camera is oriented to one of the user's eyes and this way a high precision gaze direction determination is accomplished.

In this paper we present a comparative analysis of two algorithms for image representation with application to recognition of 3D face scans with the presence of facial expressions. We begin with processing of the input point cloud based on curvature analysis and range image representation to achieve a unique representation of the face features. Then, subspace projection using Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) are performed. Finally classification with different classifiers will be performed.

In this paper the realization of computer adaptive testing using mathematical-statistical tools of Item Response Theory is considered. It is aimed for knowledge level quick determination of full-time students and distance educations students, and to identify gaps in their knowledge. The goal of computer adaptive testing is a student knowledge assessment. But mainly it is making recommendations for adaptive learning system to individual learning path construction. Such system can be used in within LMS as well as for students self-training.

Ineffective meetings occur frequently and participants leave with different understandings of what has been decided upon. For meetings that require quick responses (e.g., disaster-response planning), everyone must leave the meeting on the same page to ensure the successful execution of the mission. Detecting patterns of weak agreements in planning meetings is the first step towards designing an intelligent agent that encourages team members to revisit decisions that may adversely affect the team's performance, and to spur dialog that results in higher quality plans. This paper presents a statistical approach to learning patterns of strong and weak agreements without using domain-specific content or keywords, meaning the algorithm takes as input information about how the team plans but does not require potentially sensitive data on what is being planned. Our approach applies statistical machine learning to dialog features, which prior studies in cognitive psychology have shown qualitatively capture the level of joint commitment to plan choices. We analyze a real-world conversation dataset, the AMI corpus, to quantitatively verify that dialog features improve the estimation of strength of agreements over prior approaches. We show these results are consistent across a number of different supervised and unsupervised learning algorithms, and that can achieve up to 94% average accuracy in estimating the strength of agreements.

Images and video are often coded using block based discrete cosine transform (DCT) or discrete wavelet transform (DWT) that cause a great deal of visual distortions. Non-Local Means (NLM) algorithm is chosen by means of comparing complexity and quality of different algorithms and is considered to be the better algorithm for artifacts reduction. Besides, implementation of this algorithm is computationally intensive. In this note, improvements to the non-local means introduced in [3-8] are presented and very effective performance optimization approach is presented. This approach is based on additional memory usage for caching pixels distance in the image. We present the underlying framework and experimental results for video that is processed by NLM with different parameters.

The number of applications using machine-2-machine-(M2M)-communication is rapidly increasing. Whereas, development and installation of systems using standard mobile communication systems is a mere development task, the implementation of battery-powered sensors systems comes with severe challenges, especially, if long operation times in the range of years should be achieved. For these systems, optimization not only from hardware, but also from firmware side is required. The contribution gives an overview on the GPRS and the UMTS protocol elements being critical to energy consumption and shows results of power and energy consumptions measurements under various conditions. Therefore, it will also give an insight into the respective measurement systems. Finally, recommendations for optimization with regard to energy-consumption are given.

Level-set methods are commonly used to segment regions of interest within images or volumes. These tasks usually involve a high number of operations. GPUs nowadays feature high computation and data throughput capabilities. In this work we present two GPU implementations of the level-set-based segmentation method called Fast Two Cycle. Our solutions partition the computational domain in tiles that can be processed in parallel. The original algorithm is adapted to the special features of the GPU, and performance is optimized by keeping a record of the tiles that require processing at any given time. We have tested our implementations with a set of 3D CT images of brain vessels and we show that we can obtain competitive results using commodity hardware.

Recently, privacy preserving issues have been actively studied on the time-series data widely used in variety of applications such as financial, medical, and weather analysis. In this paper, we survey and analyze the recent work of privacy preserving data mining (PPDM) on time-series data. For this, we first investigate what is the privacy in time-series data. We then survey various perturbation techniques on time-series data in the centralized computing environment. We next investigate secure multi-party computation (SMC) and encryption techniques in the distributed computing environment. Social network and cloud computing applications incur a large volume of sensitive (time-series) data, and thus, privacy preserving techniques for exploiting those sensitive data have become much more substantial in many research areas. Our survey results can be used for developing efficient and robust time-series data-based PPDM techniques that can be applied to new computing environments.

In recent years intelligent soft computing techniques such as fuzzy inference system (FIS), artificial neural network (ANN) and adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) are proven to be efficient and suitable when applied to a variety of systems. In this paper we intend to formulate an adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS), a new sensor based navigation technique for mobile robot. The ANFIS controller uses different sensors based information such as front obstacle distance (FOD), right obstacle distance (ROD), left obstacle distance (LOD) and heading angle (HA) for choosing the optimal direction while moving towards target. The real time experiment has been carried out under different environmental scenarios to collect the data set for modeling ANFIS tool box. Using ANFIS tool box, the obtained mean of squared error (MSE) for training data set in the current paper is 0.031. We also have present the simulation experiments using MATLAB, showing that ANFIS consistently perform better results to navigate the mobile robot safely in a terrain populated by stationary obstacles.

In Agriculture industry, plants are prone to diseases caused by pathogens and environment conditions and it is a prime cause to lose of revenue. It requires continuous monitoring of plants and environment parameters to overcome this problem. A mobile Robotic system for monitoring these parameters using wireless network has been envisaged here and developed based on ARM-Linux platform. Robotic platform consists of ARM9 based S3C2440 processor from SAMSUNG and Linux Kernel , Motor driver, robot mechanical assembly. The farm environment and plant condition such as temperature, humidity soil moisture content etc. are continuously monitored through suitable data acquisition system incorporated in the robotic system. A servo motor based robotic arm is designed for collecting soil sample and test various soil parameters. A closed loop feedback algorithm based on Digital PID controller has been developed for precise position and speed control of mobile robot. The wireless control of mobile robot and monitored data acquisition is accomplished using zigbee wireless protocol. For displaying acquired data on host system a Graphical user interface is designed using qt creater framework. For independent functioning of mobile robot, application program is written in c language and cross compiled using arm-linux-gcc compiler on Ubuntu 10.04 platform and ported on the memory of ARM processor.
