Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks (VANETs) represent a rapidly emerging, particularly challenging class of Mobile Ad-hoc Networks (MANETs). VANETs are expected to be massively deployed in upcoming vehicles, because their use can improve the safety of driving and makes new forms of inter-vehicle communications possible as well. Because they are characterized of high mobility and dynamic topology change, congestion control should be performed in such networks. In this paper, we analyze the TCP traffic in a VANET. We investigate and compare the Good put of DYMO Protocol for TCP Vegas and TCP New Reno considering also the congestion window, slow-start threshold and sequence number versus time. The simulation results show that in this VANET scenario, TCP New Reno performs better than TCP Vegas. © 2012 ieee.

As Clouds are complex, large-scale, and heterogeneous distributed systems, management of their resources is a challenging task. They need automated and integrated intelligent strategies for provisioning of resources to offer services that are secure, reliable, and cost-efficient. Hence, effective management of services becomes fundamental in software platforms that constitute the fabric of computing Clouds. In this direction, this paper identifies open issues in autonomic resource provisioning and presents innovative management techniques for supporting SaaS applications hosted on Clouds. We present a conceptual architecture and early results evidencing the benefits of autonomic management of Clouds.

ATCA/AXIe compatible board for fast control and data acquisition in nuclear fusion experiments

An in-house development of an advanced Telecommunications computing Architecture (ATCA) board for fast control and data acquisition, with Input/Output (10) processing capability, is presented. The architecture, compatible with the ATCA (PICMG 3.4) and ATCA eXtensions for Instrumentation (AXIe) specifications, comprises a passive Rear Transition Module (RTM) for 10 connectivity to ease hot-swap maintenance and simultaneously to increase cabling life cycle. The board complies with ITER Fast Plant System Controller (FPSC) guidelines for rear 10 connectivity and redundancy, in order to provide high levels of reliability and availability to the control and data acquisition systems of nuclear fusion devices with long duration plasma discharges. Simultaneously digitized data from all Analog to Digital Converters (ADC) of the board can be filtered/decimated in a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA), decreasing data throughput, increasing resolution, and sent through Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) Express to multi-core processors in the ATCA shelf hub slots. Concurrently the multi-core processors can update the board Digital to Analog Converters (DAC) in real-time. Full-duplex point-to-point communication links between all FPGAs, of peer boards inside the shelf, allow the implementation of distributed algorithms and Multi-Input Multi-Output (MIMO) systems. Support for several timing and synchronization solutions is also provided. Some key features are onboard ADC or DAC modules with galvanic isolation, Xilinx Virtex 6 FPGA, standard Dual data Rate (DDR) 3 SODIMM memory, standard CompactFLASH memory card, intelligent Platform Management Controller (IPMC), two PCI Express x4 (generation 2) ATCA Fabric channels (dual-star topology), eleven Xilinx Aurora x1 (or other ATCA compatible communications protocol) ATCA fabric channels (full-mesh topology) and two Fast Ethernet (Precision Time Protocol - PIP ieee1588-V2 and Lan eXtensions for Instrumentation - LXI compatible) A

Cluster formation and cluster head selection are important problems in sensor network applications and can drastically affect the network's communication energy dissipation. However, selecting the cluster head is not easy in different environments which may have different characteristics. In order to deal with this problem, we have proposed a system for controlling sensor speed in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). The proposed system is based on fuzzy logic. We use 4 input linguistic parameters: Remaining Power of Sensor (RPS), Degree of Number of Neighbor Nodes (D3N), Distance from Cluster Centroid (DCC) and Sensor Speed (SS) for selection of the cluster-head and the control of sensor speed. By controlling the sensor speed, we are able to predict whether the node will leave or stay in the cluster. We evaluate the proposed system by simulations and show that the system has a good behavior. © 2012 ieee.

In Virtual instrument (VI) established for computer based automated test and control, the process with only single thread has limits when developed for acquiring high speed data, analyzing and displaying them the meaning while. Any interference from another task may block the whole running process and cause data missing. In order to increase the throughput, responding time and multi-task processing efficiency of VI, multi-thread programming with the platform LabWindows/CVI is introduced in this paper. Contents include the two strategies to establish multi-thread program, Thread pool and Asynchronous Timer, and how to protect data with multi-thread programming. Finally, a case study showed a multi-thread VI based on Asynchronous Timer method, with the comparison of performance between single thread and multi-thread program.

Evaluations for context-aware systems can not be conducted in the same manner evaluation is understood for other software systems where the concept of large corpus data, the establishment of ground truth and the metrics of precision and recall are used. Evaluation for changeable systems like context-aware and specially developed for AmI environments needs to be conducted to assess the impact and awareness of the users. E-Health represents a challenging domain where users(patients, patients' relatives and healthcare professionals) are very sensitive to systems' response. If system failure occurs it can conducts to a bad diagnosis or medication, or treatment. So a user-centred evaluation system is need to provide the system with users' feedback. In this paper, we present an evaluation method for context aware systems in AmI environments and specially to u-Heatlh domain. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

Resource discovery in large-scale distributed systems is a challenging issue, mainly due to the traditional centralized topologies in which the nodes of these systems are typically organized. This unified approach has been proven to be effectual for cluster-based grids and clouds but questionable for large scale, heterogeneous and dynamically interoperable e-infrastructure such as grids and inter-clouds. The latter e-infrastructures are less tolerant with regards to scalability, elasticity and flexibility. In this work, we explore the decentralized distributed search protocols that transform nodes of large size distributed systems to act as both clients and servers. Specifically, we extend the use of a job profile specification that is generated during the user job submission process. The exploitation of the job profile will allow us to orchestrate and group different user submissions into transient inter-cloud brokering groups that represent a temporary resource cluster according to the current service submission characteristics. We suggest the clustering submissions in an inter-cloud system with the view of forming notional short-term grouped nodes that may reform over the time. In this way, the resource discovery process is becoming dynamically, that is to say, a transient group of nodes is required advancing a single request based on current time, opposed to multiple requests as currently happens. We further propose an architecture that implies nodes orchestration based on previous resource requests as well as we model a service meta-registry for inter-cloud systems to store relevant information to service submission. © 2012 ieee.

The Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) platform allows messages composed of various multimedia attachments to be exchanged between users of mobile devices. However, these heterogeneous devices exhibit different capabilities regarding what media types, resolution, and maximal message size they support making the adaptation of messages mandatory to ensure compatibility between sending and receiving devices. The challenge is therefore to adapt messages so that they satisfy the receiving device's constraints in a way that both maximizes the user experience and minimizes the computational cost of adaptation. Minimizing computational cost will help cope with high-volume traffic while maximizing user experience, as estimated by the perceived quality of adapted messages, will secure the service provider's user base. In this work, we propose a generic adaptation scheme based on predictors for file size and image quality resulting from transcoding parameters applied to a given image that will explicitly maximize perceived quality as estimated by the structural similarity image quality index. We will further show that our proposed method is resilient to the imprecision of the predictors and that it yields significantly better quality at a greatly reduced computational cost compared to other methods proposed in prior art.

In this paper, we describe a conversational agent which provides academic information. The dialog model of this agent has been developed by means of a statistical methodology that automatically explores the dialog space and allows learning new enhanced dialog strategies from a dialog corpus. A dialog simulation technique has been applied to acquire data required to train the dialog model and then explore the new dialog strategies. A set of measures has also been defined to evaluate the dialog strategy. The results of the evaluation show how the dialogmodel deviates from the initially predefined strategy, allowing the conversational agent to tackle new situations and generate new coherent answers for the situations already present in the initial corpus. The proposed technique can be used not only to develop new dialog managers but also to explore new enhanced dialog strategies focused on user adaptation required to interact in AmI environments. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

Affective computer interfaces improve human-computer interaction by enabling the communication of the user's emotional state. To this end, subtle non-verbal methods of communication provide a rich source of information which may provide valuable affective context to the human-computer interaction. Of particular note are physiological indicators of affective state, as these are objective in nature and have been demonstrated to be successful in many studies. Physiological computing may be viewed as a data acquisition and signal processing task whereby the electrical impulses or biopotentials created by the body are captured, analyzed and recorded in a suitable format for later communication. Whilst there are a number of commercially available hardware platforms to support physiological data acquisition, these all possess limitations in a few distinct areas. Not least of these is the physical form factor. For such devices to be embedded and integrated into the next generation of computer interfaces, an open physiological platform is required. This will enable future development to build upon this foundation and concentrate on novel and unique form factors and implementation environments. This paper describes the development and implementation of an open affective platform. This hardware and software solution provides the necessary functionality to measure and describe the users underlying affective state in terms of its component dimensions. This data may then be communicated to other application software, or modules within a larger affective computing application.
