Low Power Wide Area Networks (LPWANs) provide the Internet of Things (IoT) with energy-efficient, low cost, and long-range networking. LoRaWAN is one of the most widely deployed and studied LPWAN technologies due to its license-free operation and open standard, which has enabled 3rd parties to deploy millions of networks worldwide. LoRa allows transmission range and speed to be traded off by configuring the Spreading Factor (SF) setting. By tuning this parameter, the performance envelope of the network can be configured to favor a higher speed or longer range. While the SF of LoRA provides a simple and elegant means to tailor performance, at the highest spreading factor, maximum throughput drops to a few bits per second, dramatically increasing data extraction times. In this paper, we address this problem by proposing Smart-Hop, a novel multi-hop MAC layer protocol for LoRa which implements low-overhead routing. In contrast to prior work, Smart-Hop exploits the variable range afforded by different SFs to eliminate much of the complexity and overhead of traditional multi-hop mesh networking. Smart-Hop reduces the number of end-devices operating at high SFs while implementing low overhead routing in order to reduce data extraction times. These improvements are achieved while preserving the maximum range offered by LoRa in its highest SF configuration.

Given a set of sensor nodes V where each node wants to broadcast a message to all its neighbors that are within a certain broadcasting range, the local broadcasting problem is to schedule all these requests in as few timeslots as possible. In this paper, assuming the more realistic physical interference model and no knowledge of the topology, we present three distributed local broadcasting algorithms where the first one is for the asynchronized model and the other two are for the synchronized model. Under the asynchronized model, nodes may join the execution of the protocol at any time and do not have access to a global clock, for which we give a distributed randomized algorithm with approximation ratio O(log(2) n). This improves the state-of-the-art result given in [14] by a logarithmic factor. For the synchronized model where communications among nodes are synchronous and nodes can perform physical carrier sensing, we propose two distributed deterministic local broadcasting algorithms for synchronous and asynchronous node wakeups, respectively. Both algorithms have approximation ratio O(log n).

Smart solutions in the healthcare domain have garnered considerable attention due to their potential to enhance standard treatment methods and improve overall health. However, privacy concerns often prevent the sharing of healthcare data, which can limit the scope for improvement. In this context, Federated Learning (FL) has emerged as a transformative paradigm in machine learning. It enables collaborative model training across decentralised devices while preserving data privacy and security. This approach has gained significant traction in recent years, particularly within the healthcare sector. It offers unprecedented opportunities to harness collective intelligence from diverse healthcare datasets without compromising sensitive patient information. This survey paper summarises numerous research works that focus on the application of FL to address various healthcare challenges. Moreover, a comparison of these works is conducted, summarising the different technologies employed in each case. Therefore, in light of the previous remarks, this paper provides an up-to-date overview of the state of the art in the application of FL in the healthcare industry.

We present a distributed systems architecture that uses Grid computing to combine basic nodes of wireless sensor networks with complex sensor nodes of wired networks. Three kinds of complex sensor nodes are identified: objects, agents and containers. The decision making capabilities of the complex nodes are then combined with a quality of service (QoS) framework for gathering data from the wireless sensor nodes. The resulting combination provides a powerful conceptual framework for developing ambient intelligence and ubiquitous computing applications on the Grid. © 2007 ieee.

Change detection in images is of great interest due to its relevance in applications such as video surveillance. This paper presents the underlying theoretical problem of image change detection using wireless sensor network. The proposed system consists of multiple image sensors which make local decisions independently and send them to the base station which finally makes a global decision and declares whether a significant change has occurred or not.

The main challenge when deploying sensor networks pertains to optimizing the energy consumption for data collection from sensor nodes. This paper proposes a new data collection mechanism based on a distributed clustering method. It uses sensor network energy maps and applies QoS requirements in order to reduce energy consumption. Simulation results show that this new data collection algorithm consumes less energy than the TAG algorithm.

distributed publish/subscribe systems are an enabling technology for Industrial Internet of Things applications. While the number of sensors increases, network bandwidth becomes a bottleneck. Existing solutions typically aim to reduce network load either by pre-processing events directly on the edge or by aggregating events into larger batches. However, these approaches are rather static and do not adequately account for the application requirements of subscribers or the actual values of sensor measurements. This paper introduces methods for publish/subscribe systems to dynamically adapt payloads of events at runtime based on i) different data reduction and transformation strategies, ii) a wrapper solution around existing message brokers and iii) a semantics-based event schema registry. Consumers are able to subscribe to various quality levels and receive virtual events, that are reconstructed directly at the subscriber based on knowledge from the semantic model and dynamic decision rules. Our evaluation shows that the concept of virtual events can reduce the network load between publishers, the message broker and subscribers compared to multiple investigated compression techniques.

In this paper, focusing on the idea of establishing a more coherent and robust sensor uncertainty management framework, we first suggest that different levels of sensor data uncertainties need to be evaluated and organized into a hierarchy. In particular, in consideration of the potential of distributed coordination among sensor nodes due to the inherent association between wireless sensor networks and multi-agent systems, also in a rough set technique sense under imprecision and partial truth, we further present an adaptive model of hierarchical sensor uncertainty coordination, which includes local data fusion, global and rational decision, along with conflict resolution. Experimental results of an example case study of our proposed approach demonstrate the practical application to the certainty improvement of noisy sensor readings.

We propose and study a class of structured and dynamic information push and pull protocols for wireless sensor networks. For structured information dissemination, our study focuses on the impact of various information demand characteristics on dissemination along some type of backbone structures. Our exploration of dynamic information push and pull focuses on finding optimal strategies in a distributed manner without prior knowledge of information demand characteristics and/or with heterogeneous query distributions. Our theoretical analysis uses a simple grid structure, but the protocol is applicable to arbitrary network topologies. A distributed traffic information system is used as the context of study and the simulation study uses a microscopic traffic simulator to demonstrate some of the ideas discussed in the paper.
