This paper is a duplication of the original text from the paper cited below. The original text was copied without attribution (including appropriate references to the original author(s) and/or paper title) and without permission. Due to the nature of this violation, reasonable effort should be made to remove all past references to this paper, and future references should be made to the following article: "A distributed Group Mutual Exclusion Algorithm for Soft Real Time systems" by Abhishek Swaroop, and Awadhesh Kumar Singh in World Academy of Science, Engineering and Technology vol 26, December 2007 pp. 138-143 WASET The GME problem is an interesting generalization of the mutual exclusion problems. A few solutions of the GME problem have been studied for message passing distributed systems. However, none of these solutions is totally suitable for the real-time distributed systems. In this paper, we propose a new algorithm for the GME problem in the real-time distributed systems based on Token. The algorithm uses the concepts of priority queue, dynamic request set and the process state. The algorithm uses the approach in which first come first serve in selecting the next session type between the same priority levels and satisfies the concurrent occupancy property. The algorithm allows all n processors to be inside their CS provided they request for the same session. The performance analysis and correctness proof of the algorithm has also been included in the paper.

Change detection in images is of great interest due to its relevance in applications such as video surveillance. This paper presents the underlying theoretical problem of image change detection using wireless sensor network. The proposed system consists of multiple image sensors which make local decisions independently and send them to the base station which finally makes a global decision and declares whether a significant change has occurred or not.

In wireless sensor networks (WSNs), nodes assist each other by passing data and control packets from one node to another. In a complex WSN, malicious nodes are well disguised so that they can purposely attack the whole network using the natural cooperations of sensors. In additional, the error-prone of sensors always cause the system instability of WSNs. To overcome this, we study trust mechanism in the human society and introduce it into a WSN. We also construct a trust model in accordance with the characteristics of a WSN. Based on trust model, we propose a power-aware and reliable algorithm for sensor selection. The simulation results show that our algorithm can improve the system stability of sensor networks, and efficiently defend against the attacks of malicious nodes.

sensor networks are often used to sense the physical world and provide observations for various uses. In hostile environments, it is critical to control the network access to ensure the integrity, availability, and at times confidentiality of the sensor data. This paper develops efficient methods for distributed access control in sensor networks. The paper starts with a baseline approach, which provides a more flexible and efficient way to enforce access control when compared with previous solutions. This paper then extends the baseline approach to enable privilege delegation, which allows a user to delegate its privilege to other users without using a trusted server, and broadcast query, which allows a user to access the network at a large scale efficiently. The privilege delegation and broadcast query are very useful in practice; none of the current solutions can achieve these two properties.

Today, the high cost of supercomputers in the one hand and the need for large-scale computational resources on the other hand, has led to use network of computational resources known as Grid. Numerous research groups in universities, research labs, and industries around the world are now working on a type of Grid called Computational Grids that enable aggregation of distributed resources for solving large-scale data intensive problems in science, engineering, and commerce. Several institutions and universities have started research and teaching programs on Grid computing as part of their parallel and distributed computing curriculum. To better use tremendous capabilities of this distributed system, effective and efficient scheduling algorithms are needed. In this paper, we introduce a new scheduling algorithm based on two conventional scheduling algorithms, Min-Min and Max-Min, to use their cons and at the same time, cover their pros. It selects between the two algorithms based on standard deviation of the expected completion time of tasks on resources. We evaluate our scheduling heuristic, the Selective algorithm, within a grid simulator called GridSim. We also compared our approach to its two basic heuristics. The experimental results show that the new heuristic can lead to significant performance gain for a variety of scenarios.

We propose and study a class of structured and dynamic information push and pull protocols for wireless sensor networks. For structured information dissemination, our study focuses on the impact of various information demand characteristics on dissemination along some type of backbone structures. Our exploration of dynamic information push and pull focuses on finding optimal strategies in a distributed manner without prior knowledge of information demand characteristics and/or with heterogeneous query distributions. Our theoretical analysis uses a simple grid structure, but the protocol is applicable to arbitrary network topologies. A distributed traffic information system is used as the context of study and the simulation study uses a microscopic traffic simulator to demonstrate some of the ideas discussed in the paper.

Bluetooth is a promising short-range radio network technology. We present a low cost and easily deployed, scalable infrastructure for indoor location-based computing of mobile devices based on the Bluetooth technology. The system consists of 2 main components, namely the Bluetooth (BT) sensor System and the Central Navigation System which have been developed using the JDK 1.6. The Bluetooth sensor System allows mobile devices whose Bluetooth mode is set to discoverable, to be scanned and detected, and they receive customizable text message and other relevant files (maps, sound files, video clips) of their positioning information, e.g. room identity. The positioning information is also sent to the Central Navigation System which in turn displays and updates the navigation map. The system is also used to track the movement of different BT mobile devices within the implemented environment.

Publish/subscribe (Pub/Sub) systems have been used in traditional distributed computing applications to provide effective and efficient event services. Recently, the design of Pub/Sub systems are proposed for wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Some of the proposed Pub/Sub protocols address the issue of establishing event delivery path with low routing cost by using geographic information. However, they have not considered how to reduce redundant event delivery, which may cause high resource consumption and poor system scalability. In this paper, we propose protocols which address both issues. More specifically, our protocols use geographic information to save routing cost, and meanwhile reduce redundant event delivery by letting the subscribers share the event delivery paths. Three highly scalable and efficient Pub/Sub protocols for WSNs, namely shortest delivery path (SDP), shortest delivery path with lower delivery overhead (SDP-LDO), and lowest delivery overhead (LDO), are designed to achieve different performance goals. The results of theoretical and experimental evaluation show that the proposed protocols can significantly improve the resource efficiency and scalability of a Pub/Sub system compared to the previous solutions. Our protocols can also be used to achieve a good tradeoff between the costs of event subscribing and event delivery.

Wireless sensor Networks (WSNs) consist of multiple, distributed nodes each with limited resources. With their strict resource constraints and application-specific characteristics, WSNs contain many challenging trade-offs. This paper proposes a bio-inspired load balancing approach, based on pheromone signalling mechanisms, to solve the trade-off between service availability and energy consumption. We explore the performance consequences of the pheromone-based load balancing approach using: 1) a system-level simulator; 2) deployment of real sensor testbeds to provide a competitive analysis of these evaluation methodologies. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is evaluated with different scenario parameters and the required performance evaluation techniques are investigated on case studies based on sound sensors.

We describe a completely new concept of earthquake warning. The collaborative system is based on distributed systems that are interconnected by a network like the Internet. Modern systems may have multiple sensors to detect movements. These sensors are integrated to detect a shock movement before the hard disk may be hurt. Another sensor for movement is the hard disk itself, due to its extreme precise spatial resolution, the readout process is very sensible to minor acceleration of the disk. We can collect all this data to understand the movement of the computer system. Since there are many other sources of acceleration beside an earth quake, we have to use the collective detection of many independent systems. For fast and efficient detection we describe a P2P (peer-to-peer) solution to solve this part. The fact that earthquakes generate different types of movement makes it in principle feasible to predict a major movement a few ten seconds before the disaster happens.
