Many self-configuration problems that occur in sensor networks, such as clustering or operator placement for in-network data aggregation, can be modeled as facility location problems. Unfortunately, existing distributed facility location algorithms are hardly applicable to multi-hop sensor networks. Based on an existing centralized algorithm, we therefore devise equivalent distributed versions which, to our knowledge, represent the first distributed approximations of the facility location problem that can be practicably implemented in multi-hop sensor networks with local communication. Through simulation studies, we demonstrate that, for typical instances derived from sensor-network configuration problems, the algorithms terminate in only few communication rounds, the run-time does not increase with the network size, and, finally, that our implementation requires only local communication confined to small network neighborhoods. In addition, we propose simple extensions to our algorithms to support dynamic networks with varying link qualities and node additions and deletions. Using link quality traces collected from a real sensor network deployment, we demonstrate the effectiveness of our algorithms in realistic multi-hop sensor networks.

Our work addresses the spatiotemporally varying nature of data traffic in environmental monitoring and surveillance applications. By employing a network-controlled mobile basestation (MB), we present a simple energy-efficient data collection protocol for wireless sensor networks (WSNs). In contrast to the existing MB-based solutions where WSN nodes buffer data passively until visited by an MB, our protocol maintains an always-on multihop connectivity to the MB by means of an efficient distributed tracking mechanism. This allows the nodes to forward their data in a timely fashion, avoiding latencies due to long-term buffering. Our protocol progressively relocates the MB closer to the regions that produce higher data rates and reduces the average weighted multihop traffic, enabling energy savings. Using the convexity of the cost function, we prove that our local and greedy protocol is in fact optimal. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2007.

We consider a distributed power control scheme based on average BER using game theoretic approach and prove the existence and uniqueness of the Nash Equilibrium for the proposed scheme. Then a synchronous distributed algorithm for this scheme is presented The simulation results of the algorithm reveal that the proposed algorithm outperforms the average power distributed algorithm.

In wireless sensor networks, coverage configuration is an important issue which can prolong the system lifetime significantly. Most of current literatures are based on physical coverage, i.e. deterministic detection model, which is inconsistent with the realistic application of wireless sensor networks. A distributed probabilistic coverage configuration protocol (DPCCP) is proposed in this paper. It adopts Neyman-Peason probabilistic detection model to decide whether nodes can be off or not. Our DPCCP guarantees that the system detection probability is maintained after turning off lots of unnecessary nodes. We extend LEACH by embedding DPCCP into LEACH (namely LEACHE) seamlessly without any modification of the original workflow. Simulation results show that DPCCP can effectively reduce the number of active sensor nodes, and LEACHE outperforms LEACH in terms of system lifetime and energy efficiency.

Data fusion is widely used in wireless sensor networks. In this paper, we explore the problem of minimum energy reliable information gathering(MERIG) in wireless sensor networks under data fusion tree model. From the perspective of information value, two algorithms, the optimal algorithm and the distributed approximate algorithm are proposed. The optimal algorithm is the optimal solution for MERIG while the distributed algorithm can approximate the optimal well. Using these two schemes, the information reliability can be guaranteed with high energy efficient manner under unreliable wireless environment.

Trust, reliability, and validation of data collected in distributed edge sensor systems is an increasingly relevant issue. Though the obvious solution of deploying redundant identical systems can provide validation, real-world modification constraints can sometimes make this difficult, or even prevent this. However, many distributed sensors exist for other purposes, that may be available to be used. Introducing validation with existing sensors may impose too high a requirement for bandwidth to use cloud-based validation, while edge-based validation may require too much computing power. A fog-based validation layer using sensory substitution is presented. With the rise of cyber-physical attacks on cloud, fog, and edge computing systems, validation is important, and lack of correct validation has been seen in some high impact cases where incorrect sensor data can be thought of as as true. A playback cyber-attack is discussed, and an algorithm for increasing reliability of IoT systems in the case of typical sensor errors or more serious incidents like cyber-physical attacks is presented. Given the need for dependable autonomy and reliability in IoT systems, this paper presents a method of sensor validation to increase robustness, resilience and dependability of sensed data by detecting false positives and negatives, and corroboration of true positives and negatives, using sensory substitution. Perhaps sometimes sensor data is trusted without ongoing validation. Using the example of cameras and artificial intelligence-based human presence detection, as well as using ambient distributed magnetometers and luminosity sensors, examples of a fog-based corroboration and validation methodology for human detection is presented. Results show the technique is an effective vector for sensor validation using available sensors, and scenarios where sensory substitution corrects false positives and false negatives from an artificial intelligence visual model are shown.

An important class of sensor network applications alms at estimating the spatiotemporal behavior of a physical phenomenon, such as temperature variations over an area of interest. These networks thereby essentially act as a distributed sampling system. However, unlike in the event detection class of sensor networks, the notion of sensing range is largely meaningless in this case. As a result, existing techniques to exploit sensing redundancy for event detection, which rely on the existence of such sensing range, become unusable. Instead, this paper presents a new method to exploit redundancy for the sampling class of applications, which adaptively selects the smallest set of reporting sensors to act as sampling points. By projecting the sensor space onto an equivalent Hilbert space, this method ensures sufficiently accurate sampling and interpolation, without a priori knowledge of the statistical structure of the physical process. Results are presented using synthetic sensor data and show significant reductions in the number of active sensors.

A distributed system for approximate query answering on sensor network data is proposed, where a suitable compression technique is exploited to represent data and support query answering. Each node of the system stores either detailed or summarized sensor readings. Query answers are computed by identifying the set of nodes that contain (either compressed or not) data involved in the query, and eventually partitioning the query in a set of sub-queries to be evaluated at different nodes. Queries are partitioned according to a cost model aiming at making the evaluation efficient and guaranteeing the desired degree of accuracy of query answers.

Wireless sensor networks represent a new generation of real-time embedded systems with significantly different communication constraints from the traditional networked systems. With their development, a new attack called a path-based Dos (PDoS) attack has appeared. In a PDoS attack, an adversary, either inside or outside the network, overwhelms sensor nodes by flooding a multi-hop end-to-end communication path with either replayed packets or injected spurious packets. In this article, we propose a solution using mobile agents which can detect PDoS attacks easily.

The application of run-time evolvable software stacks promises an increase in the lifetime of wireless sensor network deployments. Besides supporting changing application requirements, said systems allow the underlying platforms to adapt to new environments by replacing system and communication services at runtime. These dynamics across various software layers however complicate the provision of accurate information about the current software and environmental status of a sensor node. This is problematic as sensor network management requires such information to configure efficient systems. As such, a mechanism needs to be in place via which run-time deployable software services can make their status information available to others in a standardized manner. In this paper we introduce StIgMa;a design for a unified node-local status registry on a sensor node. StIgMa's interfaces are cross-cutting and provide access to status information on all software layers on a sensor node. This is achieved without duplication of status data and avoiding tight coupling of status information providers and clients. To allow multi-user and flexible operation, StIgMa is supported by an extensible namespace for status parameters and a query language. Evaluation of a proof-of-concept implementation confirms that node-local centralized management of status information can be realized in a light-weight manner.
