Power control in wireless networks is important to maintain reliable communication links between base stations and nodes, and to maximize the battery life. An energy aware connectivity set based transmission power control protocol is presented in this paper. We augment our distributed protocol with a heuristic that considers energy cost information when making power control decisions. Compared to traditional protocol, our protocol can improve energy efficiency and prolong network lifetime significantly, while networks connectivity is still maintained in extreme scenarios. Simulation results demonstrate our conclusion.

A simple decentralized power control algorithm for communication systems with mobile users and unknown nonlinear and time-varying link gains is proposed and studied. We prove that the proposed algorithm is exponentially converging. Furthermore, we show that the algorithm significantly outperforms the well-known Foschini and Miljanic algorithm in the case of quickly moving mobile users.

Wireless sensor Networks (WSN) consist of spatially distributed autonomous devices using sensors to cooperatively monitor physical or environmental conditions. Generally, sensor nodes are resource-constraint in terms of size, power and bandwidth, therefore energy-efficient design becomes one of the fundamental goals in WSN. To provide reliable service in surveillance as well as energy efficiency, significant attention has recently been devoted to dynamic coverage algorithms based on sensors which are capable of adjusting its transmission and sensing range. In this paper, we propose two local sensing radii optimization schemes based on one-hop approximation of Delaunay Triangulation to minimize the energy consumption and extend the lifetime of networks. Furthermore, we prove that our approximation of Delaunay Triangulation guarantees complete coverage and generates the same radii assignment as traditional Delaunay Triangulation. Our ns-2 based simulation shows performance improvements in many aspects such as coverage ratio, sensing energy consumption, node failure rate, and lifetime of networks.

Nodes self-localization algorithm is one of the wireless sensor networks' key techniques. The novel distributed range-free algorithm is based on clustering technique of data mine. Each regular node and its random two connected anchors construct a triangle. The regular node can calculate its pair of possible conjugate positions by the two anchors coordinates and edge scale of the triangles which may be the scale of the least hops between the three angles instead. Clustering selects the most similar cluster from all possible positions. The Centroid of the subset should be used as the position of the regular node. Simulations by OPNET show that precision can be increased to approach 1/4 of radio range and better than that of most representative traditional ones, such as DV-Hop.

Total drag of common transport systems such as aircrafts or railways is primarily determined by friction drag. Reducing this drag at high Reynolds numbers (<10(4)) is currently investigated using flow control based on transversal surface waves. For application in transportation systems with large surfaces a distributed real-time actuator and sensor network is in demand. To fulfill the requirement of real-time capability a deterministic transport protocol with a master slave strategy is introduced. With our network model implemented in Simulink using TrueTime toolbox the deterministic transport protocol could be verified. In the model the Master-Token-Slave (MTS) protocol is implemented between the application layer following the ieee 1451.1 smart transducer interface standards and the Ethernet medium access protocol. The model obeys interfaces to the flow control and the DAQ-hardware allowing additional testing in model in the loop simulations.

With the onset of the Internet the perception of computing systems in general has revolutionised. Areas of research have migrated from developing nodes to building networks - thus requiring the need for a variety of information processing techniques, such as clustering, classification, dependency modelling and others. However, the applications of sensor Networks are yet to evolve in such proportions. Some of the primary constraints being the resources available in an embedded environment, the need to dynamically configure services to carry out a variety of tasks, communication interfaces and sensing and monitoring techniques. This paper discusses a holonic analysis to aid in mitigating ill-structured and often problematic situations that, are often characterized by uncertainty in reasoning and the varying nature of relationships with associated elements. The proposed methodology is a synergy between the classic model derived from Soft systems Methodology (SSM) and the model of Systemic Analysis through Familiar Entities (SAFE). Development of an Intelligent Security System (ISS) has been considered to be an ideal test-bed for this synergy to go through the phases of problem definition and exploration, development of conceptual models and generation of insight to stimulate acceptable and feasible changes. The technical aspect of this system encompasses the mode of query processing and surveillance through a structured sensor network set up with the aid of distributed services and network protocols.

The connected dominating set (CDS) has been widely used for efficient routing in wireless sensor networks. Although finding the minimum connected dominating set (MCDS) in an arbitrary graph is a NP-hard problem, many algorithms have been proposed to construct an approximation of the MCDS for efficient routing in wireless sensor networks. To address the weaknesses of these existing algorithms, we propose a new distributed MCDS approximation algorithm, CDS-HG, to construct the CDS for wireless sensor networks. This algorithm models a wireless sensor network as a hierarchical graph and uses a competition-based strategy to select nodes at a certain hierarchical level to route messages for nodes in the next level of the hierarchical graph. Formal analysis and simulation studies show that our CDS-HG algorithm generates smaller CDS sizes while requiring less communication overhead compared with the existing distributed MCDS approximation algorithms.

Many emergent distributed sensing applications need to keep track of mobile entities across multiple sensor networks connected via an IP network. To simplify the realization of such applications, we present MLDS, a Multi-resolution Location Directory Service for tiered sensor networks. MLDS provides a rich set of spatial query services ranging from simple queries about entity location, to complex nearest neighbor queries. Furthermore, MLDS supports multiple query granularities which allow an application to achieve the desired tradeoff between query accuracy and communication cost. We implemented MLDS on Agimone, a unified middleware for sensor and IP networks. We then deployed and evaluated the service on a tiered testbed consisting of tmote nodes and base stations. Our experimental results show that, when compared to a centralized approach, MLDS achieves significant savings in communication cost while still providing a high degree of accuracy, both within a single sensor network and across multiple sensor networks.

In this paper we propose a new routing protocol for wireless sensor networks called Energy-efficient Chain-cluster Routing protocol (ECR) and introduce the main idea of the protocol architecture. This protocol uses the hybrid way to manage the networks, and it takes advantages of both central control and distributed algorithm to form a topology with two-hierarchical chains' formation. ECR includes a simple but efficient cluster-head-leader selection criterion, which prolongs the time of the first node die in the network and improves the energy efficiency. Advantages of ECR are simulated by comparing with both Low-Energy Adaptive Clustering Hierarchy (LEACH) and Power-Efficient Gathering in sensor Information System (PEGASIS).
