Wireless sensor Networks (WSNs) pose novel challenges compared with traditional networks. To answer such challenges a new communication paradigm, data-centric communication, is emerging. One form of data-centric communication is the publish/subscribe messaging system. Compared with other data-centric variants, publish/subscribe systems are common and wide-spread in distributed computing. Thus, extending publish/subscribe systems into WSNs will simplify the integration of sensor applications with other distributed applications. This paper describes MQTT-S [1], an extension of the open publish/subscribe protocol Message Queuing Telemetry Transport (MQTT) [2] to WSNs. MQTT-S is designed in such a way that it can be run on low-end and battery-operated sensor/actuator devices and operate over band width-constraint WSNs such as ZigBee-based networks. Various protocol design points are discussed and compared. MQTT-S has been implemented and is currently being tested on the IBM wireless sensor networking testbed [3]. Implementation aspects, open challenges and future work are also presented.

Pervasive healthcare systems are trying to address the expected demand for caretaking and out-of-hospital monitoring. These systems allow for automatic and distributed monitoring of patients, but many of them are time consuming with regards to installation and maintenance configuration of the sensor network and communication platform. To avoid burdening caretaking staff and relatives with installing and configuring system software and hardware, a research project at the Engineering College of Aarhus, Pervasive Healthcare lab. has been trying to achieve a zero-configuration solution, removing most handling while at the users home. Achieving a true zero-configuration strategy has proven hard to implement especially with regards to the coupling of the individual wireless sensors to a specfic patient. This paper discusses the experiences gained so far with developing a prototype solution, including how zero-configuration was original v conceived, which problems were identified, and which solutions are being tested.

Due to the nature of this violation, reasonable effort should be made to remove all past references to this paper, and future references should be made to the following article: "A distributed Group Mutual Exclusion Algorithm for Soft Real Time systems" by Abhishek Swaroop, and Awadhesh Kumar Singh in World Academy of Science, Engineering and Technology vol 26, December 2007 pp. 138-143 WASET The GME problem is an interesting generalization of the mutual exclusion problems. A few solutions of the GME problem have been studied for message passing distributed systems. However, none of these solutions is totally suitable for the real-time distributed systems. In this paper, we propose a new algorithm for the GME problem in the real-time distributed systems based on Token. The algorithm uses the concepts of priority queue, dynamic request set and the process state. The algorithm uses the approach in which first come first serve in selecting the next session type between the same priority levels and satisfies the concurrent occupancy property. The algorithm allows all n processors to be inside their CS provided they request for the same session. The performance analysis and correctness proof of the algorithm has also been included in the paper.

We present a distributed systems architecture that uses Grid computing to combine basic nodes of wireless sensor networks with complex sensor nodes of wired networks. Three kinds of complex sensor nodes are identified: objects, agents and containers. The decision making capabilities of the complex nodes are then combined with a quality of service (QoS) framework for gathering data from the wireless sensor nodes. The resulting combination provides a powerful conceptual framework for developing ambient intelligence and ubiquitous computing applications on the Grid. © 2007 ieee.

The main challenge when deploying sensor networks pertains to optimizing the energy consumption for data collection from sensor nodes. This paper proposes a new data collection mechanism based on a distributed clustering method. It uses sensor network energy maps and applies QoS requirements in order to reduce energy consumption. Simulation results show that this new data collection algorithm consumes less energy than the TAG algorithm.

Change detection in images is of great interest due to its relevance in applications such as video surveillance. This paper presents the underlying theoretical problem of image change detection using wireless sensor network. The proposed system consists of multiple image sensors which make local decisions independently and send them to the base station which finally makes a global decision and declares whether a significant change has occurred or not.

We propose and study a class of structured and dynamic information push and pull protocols for wireless sensor networks. For structured information dissemination, our study focuses on the impact of various information demand characteristics on dissemination along some type of backbone structures. Our exploration of dynamic information push and pull focuses on finding optimal strategies in a distributed manner without prior knowledge of information demand characteristics and/or with heterogeneous query distributions. Our theoretical analysis uses a simple grid structure, but the protocol is applicable to arbitrary network topologies. A distributed traffic information system is used as the context of study and the simulation study uses a microscopic traffic simulator to demonstrate some of the ideas discussed in the paper.

sensor networks are often used to sense the physical world and provide observations for various uses. In hostile environments, it is critical to control the network access to ensure the integrity, availability, and at times confidentiality of the sensor data. This paper develops efficient methods for distributed access control in sensor networks. The paper starts with a baseline approach, which provides a more flexible and efficient way to enforce access control when compared with previous solutions. This paper then extends the baseline approach to enable privilege delegation, which allows a user to delegate its privilege to other users without using a trusted server, and broadcast query, which allows a user to access the network at a large scale efficiently. The privilege delegation and broadcast query are very useful in practice;none of the current solutions can achieve these two properties.

Efficient scheduling of time slots in a time division multiple access scheme (TDMA) is important for low power wireless sensor networks. Existing algorithms are either centralized with poor scalability, or distributed but with high complexity. In this paper, we explain how TDMA could be more energy efficient by careful slot scheduling in wireless sensor networks. Then we propose a deterministic distributed TDMA scheduling algorithm (DD-TDMA). In DD-TDMA, each sensor node schedules its own TDMA slot based on its neighborhood information, and packet collisions are gracefully avoided during scheduling. The experimental results show that compared to other centralized and distributed scheduling algorithms, DD-TDMA achieves better performance in terms of schedule length, running time and message complexity.
