Elastic data stream processing enables applications to query and analyze streams of real time data. This is commonly facilitated by processing the flow of the data streams using a collection of stream processing operators which are placed in the cloud. However, the cloud follows a centralized approach which is prone to high latency delay. For avoiding this delay, we leverage on the fog computing paradigm which extends the cloud to the edge of the network. In order to design a stream processing solution for the fog, we first formulate an optimization problem for the placement of stream processing operators, which is tailored to fog computing environments. Then, we build a plugin (for stream processing frameworks) which solves the optimization problem periodically in order to support the dynamic resources of the fog. We evaluate this approach by performing experiments on an OpenStack testbed. The results show that our plugin reduces the response time and the cost by 31.5% and 8.8% respectively, compared to optimizing the placement of operators only upon initialization.

Aquaculture is one of the important activities in the coastal regions of India. The livelihood of thousands of farmers depends on the yield generated through aquaculture activities. Water quality is an important factor that affects the growth and development of marine creatures. Any deterioration in water quality endangers these species and affects the yield. Therefore, there is a need to monitor the water quality at regular intervals and provide alerts to the aquaculture farmers so that they can take preventive actions in time. This paper presents design and development of water quality monitoring system for aquaculture farms of western Godavari region. It also presents network analysis performed between the base station and the sensor node in order to cover the aquaculture farm with sensor nodes in an efficient manner.

Gauss-Newton method is a Hessian free second-order Newton's optimization method, which can be used to solve the common nonlinear least squares (NLLS) problems. In this paper, we consider the collaborative target localization problem in a wireless sensor network with a random topology structure. By using a specialized decomposition technique, the centralized Gauss-Newton method is modified as a distributed solution by exchanging locally information with the neighboring anchor nodes. In the recent diffusion Gauss-Newton algorithm, the main difficulty is the computation of inverse because the approximated Hessian is not always full column rank. To address this problem, we propose that two methods can be used to approximate the inverse matrix, i.e., Levenberg-Marquardt parameter and Moore-Penrose inverse methods. The former in essence is a damped iteration method, while the latter depends largely on the adjustment of step size. In addition to proposing the methods above for diffusion Gauss-Newton algorithm, we also compare their performance to solve the collaborative localization in wireless sensor networks, which can be modeled as a NLLS problem. Simulation results show both of them are applicable to diffusion GN, and LM method has some slight advantages in these respects such as resistance to environment noise while guaranteeing convergence, and dynamical increasing/decreasing to step size. © 2020 ACM.

The localization problem, defined as the estimation of the pose of the robot in a global reference frame, is one of the fundamental aspects of mobile robotics. Even though robust localization methods do exist for many applications, it is difficult for them to work well in some challenging situations. The main contribution of this paper is the combination of information from an omnidirectional camera and a laser sensor placed on a mobile robot to locate it, assuming a 2D situation, in a predefined indoor environment by means of the Monte Carlo algorithm. For such purpose, a new observation model was included in the AMCL node of ROS in order to incorporate visual rectangular landmarks. This hybrid approach provides significant advantages for particular environments and situations.

distributed sensor networks are the backbone of many modern intelligent systems. The collected sensor data are fused and processed to learn the underlying model (such as the Gaussian process) of interested physical process, which serves as critical knowledge for the further decision making process. On the other hand, the distributed and heterogeneous nature of connected devices makes them vulnerable to cybersecurity attacks. One common type of attacks is the false data injection attack, which is implemented by hijacking nodes and modifying sensor measurements. In this work, we study the problem of Gaussian process learning for distributed sensor networks under false data injection attacks. The proposed algorithm is based on formulating consensus for the unknown hyper-parameters of the Gaussian process over the network, where statistical measures of the reliability of the local maximum likelihood estimates are used as the weights in the consensus formulation. Furthermore, we investigate the impact of choosing different subset of nodes to deploy the FDIA, based on the topological properties of the subset of nodes. The simulation result shows that extra effort must be invested to protect the integrity of data from nodes with high centrality, due to their critical positions in the information flow over the network.

The massive access of distributed photovoltaics (DPV) puts forward higher requirements for the current grid's safe and stable operation. Aiming at the problem that the automatic dispatch control system does not directly collect realtime operating data for most 380V/220V DPV, a real-time PV restoration algorithm combined with meteorological data and historical PV data, based on long short term memory neural networks (LSTM) is proposed. Taking DPV in the Tangshan area in Hebei Province, China, as the experimental object, the estimation accuracy of the LSTM model based on typical distributed site power and meteorological data can reach up to 92.6%, which verifies the accuracy of the model. With the increasing number of DPV, the proposed estimation method is of great significance for the dispatching department to monitor and manage the operation of DPV and to dispatch electric resources, loads, and storage.

Long range wide area networks (LoRaWAN) technology provides a simple solution to enable low-cost services for low power internet-of-things (IoT) networks in various applications. The current evaluation of LoRaWAN networks relies on simulations or early testing, which are typically time-consuming and prevent effective exploration of the design space. This paper proposes an analytical model to calculate the delay and energy consumed for reliable Uplink (UL) data delivery in Class A LoRaWAN. The analytical model is evaluated using a real network test-bed as well as simulation experiments based on the ns-3 LoRaWAN module. The resulting comparison confirms that the model accurately estimates the delay and energy consumed in the considered environment. The value of the model is demonstrated via its application to evaluate the impact of the number of end-devices and the maximum number of data frame retransmissions on delay and energy consumed for the confirmed UL data delivery in LoRaWAN networks. The model can be used to optimize different transmission parameters in future LoRaWAN networks.

There is a rapid increase of population in the world at a rate of 1.09% increase every year, it has led to many problems that adversely affects our society. These problems are not only an Individual problem but also a global challenge which includes air pollution, blockage of the road, waste of natural resources such as fuel and mainly time. It is often difficult to find the space to park their respective vehicle in crowded areas. This proposed Smart parking system consists of the onsite deployed Internet of Things (IoT) module which delivers real-time output and monitors the flow of the parking of vehicles in and out of that particular parking lot. The methodology provides the optimal solution for the parking space. Using this method one can get to know the space for parking the vehicle.

Wireless sensor and Actor Network (WSAN) is formed by the collaboration of micro-sensor and actor nodes. The sensor nodes have responsibility to sense an event and send information towards an actor node. The actor node is responsible to take prompt decision and react accordingly. In order to provide effective sensing and acting, a distributed local coordination mechanism is necessary among sensors and actors. In this work, we consider the actor node selection problem and propose a fuzzy-based system (FBS) that based on data provided by sensors and actors selects an appropriate actor node. We use 4 input parameters: Distance to Event (DE), Number of sensors per Actor (NSA), Remaining Energy (RE) and Level of Received Signal (LRS) as new parameter. The output parameter is Actor Selection Decision (ASD). Considering NSA parameter, the ASD has better values when NSA is medium. Thus, when the NSA value is 0.5 the load is distributed better and in this situation the possibility for the actor to be selected is high. Also, for higher values of LRS, the actor is selected with high possibility. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Human Activity Recognition (HAR) has gained significant attention due to its wide range of applications and its promises in remote and automated health domains. Many studies in HAR used different types of sensors. In this paper, we are providing a comprehensive survey on HAR. This paper focuses on accelerometer (ACC) sensor as a primary source of data for activity detection. A survey that is a comparative study comparing various techniques and algorithms in the literature using ACC for data generation, is provided. The learning module for HAR is explored. The factors impacting the HAR when ACC is on usage are explored in addition of the challenges of HAR and future trends of research.
