Human Activity Recognition using embedded sensors has lately made renowned development and is drawing growing attention in numerous application domains including machine learning, pattern recognition, context awareness, and human-centric sensing. Due to the lacking of a prominent analysis of this topic that can acquaint concomitant communities of the research avant-garde, there are still vital perspectives that, if pleaded, would create a vital turn in the way of interaction among people and mobile devices. In this paper, we have presented a comprehensive survey along with the prevailing state of various challenges of human activity recognition based on wearable, environmental, and smartphone sensors. Firstly, we have shown numerous factors to be considered for the data pre-processing part regarding noise filtering and segmentation methods. Besides, we have made a list of sensing devices, sensors, and applications that can be used for collecting activity data along with a discussion on sensor position and requirements. Moreover, we have made a comprehensive analysis of some benchmark datasets, which includes information about sensors, attributes, activity classes, etc. Finally, we have shown an analysis of activity recognition approaches on some of the benchmark datasets based on existing works.

The prevalence of Internet of Things (IoT) in contemporary settings has induced systems composed of heterogeneous devices, computing infrastructures, and cloud services. New paradigms have emerged where computational resources are managed closer to IoT end-devices, within a general theme of decoupling from the cloud. This is because meeting application demands must occur at runtime, in the face of uncertainty and in a decentralized manner. Taking advantage of available resources closer to devices calls for novel resource allocation techniques that comply with latency, privacy and decentralization demands of IoT applications. To this end, we propose a novel decentralized resource management technique and accompanying technical framework for the deployment of latency-sensitive IoT applications on edge devices. Our technique is inspired from the functionality of an auction house and has two objectives;(i) find a deployment mapping for an arbitrary application, compliant with its individual resource requirements and latency constraints, (ii) facilitate privacy, as each device participates at their own will, based on its own availability and privacy preferences. Our approach ensures seamless deployment at runtime, assuming no design-time knowledge of device resources or network topology.

Excessive stress could lead to mental disorders, and in worst cases, suicide. It is important to properly understand self-mental health conditions to prevent stress induced disorders. Recent studies have investigated this issue by developing stress indices for measuring stress levels by using physiological signals and behavioral features. However, in applying these technologies to real life, many factors, such as concentration on tasks, which relates to "eustress," and environmental conditions can impact these stress indices, making it difficult to presume an actual "distress" level. To solve this problem, we propose a new distress sensing system: active sensing system. In this system, users are exposed to emotional stimuli and are expected to respond psychologically depending on their distress levels. We developed this system using mood induction music as the emotional stimuli. We established that these psychological responses, which hardly appear in normal conditions, lead to behavioral responses that reflect distress levels.

Boundary nodes in a Wireless sensor Network (WSN) are highly essential due to the critical functions in which they involve. Therefore, several algorithms have been proposed in the literature to detect boundary nodes. However, due to the limited power budget in the battery of sensor nodes, there is a need to develop distributed algorithms that detect boundary nodes in such ad-hoc networks with low power consumption. In this work, we propose an enhancement for a recently published algorithm for boundary nodes detection, namely distributed Least Polar-Angle Connected Node (DLPCN), through minimizing the communication overhead. Experimental results have shown around 28% power reduction, with preserving the great accuracy obtained by DLPCN algorithm. © 2019 Association for computing Machinery.

distributed simulation with a virtual environment of quality is a qualified teaching solution, especially in the military field. A soldier's performance will be better if deployed preferably in a known combat space. This article deals, with a comparative study, the performance of two teams in training with two different simulation methods. One based on simulation in an imaginary virtual battlefield and the other on that existing in reality. The research and the results of this study represent the new approach of dynamic invention of real ground established, during the research carried out during the realization of a distributed simulator of combat for soldiers training on shooting techniques. This new method aims to provide trainees with a virtual combat space existing in reality and presenting the best results and performance and based on geographic information systems (GIS), some 3D modeling tools and 3D engines in this case the 3D Unity engine. © 2019 ieee.

The pipe distribution network is a complex matter for the water distribution system. Meanwhile, the needs of clean water have grown rapidly. This has become a problem for water distribution in many cities, including Palembang since the clean water is not distributed equally. Consequently, every household does not get the flow rate based on their needs yet. Thus, this paper proposes a clean water distribution control system which utilizes Arduino based on the fuzzy method. This control system is built in a prototype design and uses 3 sensor flows as input and 3 servo outputs which control the valve of the servo. Meanwhile, the fuzzy logic program uses Arduino Mega microcontroller as a process regulator at the input and output. Each distribution area is controlled by a servo value as the output of Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) from the Arduino Mega. The results show that PWM will control the opening of the valve according to the needs so the water flow will be distributed and received by the costumers at the same time.

The distributed fiber sensing technology can calculate the temperature and strain distribution on the fiber by detecting the scattered light intensity along each position of the fiber. Brillouin optical time domain analyzer is a distributed optical fiber sensing technology, which is suitable for long distance, large range and high sensitivity distributed optical fiber sensing system, and can achieve accurate real-time measurement of temperature and strain on the optical fiber. It has important research significance and practical value. In this paper, brillouin scattering effect and BOTDA sensing principle in optical fiber are studied. Based on the signal characteristics of BOTDA sensing system, a distributed optical fiber sensing system test platform is designed.

In this paper, we proposed a high sensitivity and high resolution surface plasmon resonance biosensor based on WS2 nanomaterial, methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI(3))perovskite nanosheet and Au-Ag bimetallic film. The structure is based on Kretschmann configuration with six layers. Our proposed sensor can behave linearly upto 0.02 RIU change in sensing medium. The highest sensitivity was calculated as 195 (Deg/RIU) with full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 7.6 Deg. We also proposed another structure to get higher resolution of 6.3 Deg FWHM with a sensitivity of 187.5 (Deg/RIU). Both of our proposed designs are far superior in responsivity and sensitivity to pure Au based biosensors.
