Smart city concepts have gained substantial attention over the last few years, as they apply advances in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to enhance the quality and efficiency of services and resources. Microgrids are potentially powerful building blocks in the development of smart cities. Motivated by the opportunity, this article examines the factors leadings to the adoption of microgrids for mainstream electrical utilities grids, discusses the benefits that drive the growth, identifies the issues hindering benefit-capture of distributed energy generation inside microgrids, and provides a framework for the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to overcome challenges. We examine a simulation framework scenario and useful data sources that can help build AI capabilities within utilities. A brief description of the scalable BluWave-ai framework that leverages deep learning in the data centre is also provided, and AI inference at edge computing nodes and IoT sensors to optimize the benefits from microgrids at residential, neighbourhood, campus, enterprise and community levels is examined.

Wireless sensor networks are very constrained by low energy due to their nature of overhearing. Recent interest in wireless sensor networks has led to number of routing schemes that use the limited resources available at sensor nodes more efficiently. Various routing protocols are proposed in the literature as advancement for maximizing the life of wireless sensor networks. These schemes typically try to find the minimum energy path to optimize energy consumption at a node. The aim of this research is to propose such a protocol for multi-hop routing in which nodes forward route request packets probabilistically. The proposed approach allows the sensor nodes of the network to balance their energy in order to enhance the lifetime of the network. The proposed algorithm is implemented in QualNet simulator. Simulation experiments are performed to analyze and compare the results of proposed probabilistic energy efficient routing approach (PEER) with conventional AODV and with other energy efficient routing protocol EEAODV. Results show that PEER gives better performance in terms of battery capacity with lesser forwarding of route request packets. © 2018 ieee.

In this paper, a new islanding detection strategy is presented for low-voltage (LV) microgrid consisting of voltage-sourced converter (VSC)-based including renewable/distributed energy resources (RERs/DERs). The nonlinear mapping of relation between inputs and pattern recognition capability of adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) is the key concept of this strategy. By measuring point of common coupling (PCC), seven signals including, root-mean square (RMS) of voltage (RMS(V)), current (RMS(I)), and total harmonic distortion (THD) of voltage (THD(V) and current (THD(I)), frequency (f), and also active and reactive powers (P, Q) are passively monitored thus, while this method reduces non detection zones (NDZs), it does not a power quality. Simulations performed in MATLAB/SIMULINK environment proves the effectiveness, authenticity, selectivity, accuracy and precision of the proposed method with allowable impact on PQ according to UL1741 standard.

Signal characteristics of surface-bonded fiber Bragg grating sensor with elastoplastic metallic coating subjected to residual strain

This study involved predicting the reflected spectrum of a surface-bonded fiber Bragg grating sensor with an elastoplastic metallic coating wherein residual strains are non-uniformly distributed on the sensor. A profile of residual strains was numerically calculated based on the stepwise numerical technique by adopting strain transfer analysis and was validated by finite element analysis. The reflected spectrum of a metal-coated fiber Bragg grating sensor was consequently simulated to obtain the calculated profile of residual strains through the Transfer-matrix (T-matrix) method and coupled mode theory. The results revealed that a non-uniform profile of permanently induced residual strains along the sensor makes the reflected spectrum distorted. Thus, it is necessary for a metal-coated fiber Bragg grating sensor with a 10-mm Bragg grating to be bonded to a minimum length of 16.0 mm to suppress the signal distortion. The study additionally investigated the effect of parameters of an elastoplastic metallic coating (i.e. thicknesses and mechanical properties) on the spectrum characteristics and proposed minimally required bonding lengths by considering these characteristics. The evaluated spectra of the metal-coated fiber Bragg grating sensors that consider various coating parameters will reduce measurement errors and provide directions to determine geometric parameters when the sensor is actually installed on a structure surface.

sensor systems are acquiring more fame because of their wide range of applications like process automation, environment ( habitat) monitoring, seismic monitoring, and battlefield surveillance. Though they are popular because of their applications, they do come with various challenges like random deployment of nodes, limited energy, computation and memory. Apart from these challenges, the most critical aspect to handle is security. Information is exchanged in Wireless sensor Networks (WSNs) between the nodes through wireless links in "air" through electromagnetic waves. This feature attracts the invaders to steal data, disrupt the normal system action by disturbing the data flow and so on. WSNs are prone to attacks at various layers of networks like jamming, denial of service, sinkhole, black hole, wormhole to name a few. Each attack is characterized by its own consequences. Various countermeasures are proposed to defend against these various attacks. Out of these attacks, we pick up wormhole attack at network layer because of its unique nature. Wormhole attack can be launched in the network even if the network is secured with cryptographic techniques. In this paper we address wormhole attack by proposing a RTT centered Wormhole Outbreak discovery. Our proposed system is simple with no extra hardware requirement and no tight clock synchronization.

For the retention device of power can be simulated for day in separate conditions times. By optimizing and modern techniques the energy consumption for continuity of the network is improved.

Cloud Radio Access Network (C-RAN) is one of the key architectures for the next generation of mobile networks (5G) that aim at centralized processing and management, collaborative radios and cloud computing in real time. These features enable the architectures to make a rational adjustment to the connection between remote radio heads (RRHs) and baseband units (BBUs) dynamically. This is important since if this feature is neglected, it can cause difficulties such as blocked calls and low-quality connections. This study investigates this area and proposes an optimized mapping model for RRH-BBU that seeks a more equitable and effective balancing. The Key Performance Indicator (KPI) of blocked calls was used for this to measure the quality of service (QoS). A particle Swarm algorithm (PSO) was created to minimize the number of blocked calls and additionally balancing the processing load between the BBUs. Scenario from literature was employed that consists of 19 RRHs distributed in a geographic area, which can be mapped in a BBU pool that manages two BBUs with three sectors each. The initial configuration on average, led to 80 blocked calls. The results obtained by the PSO show that there was a reduction of up to 100% of blocked calls, as well as a more equitable load distribution between the BBUs. Additionally, realistic scenarios with different user profiles were also included, since they demonstrate that these factors have a direct impact on the load generated in the BBUs and hence, affect their balance. © 2018 ieee.

This paper presents an optimization policy for data placement in fog architectures to reduce the network usage. The proposal is based on modeling the devices (sensors, gateways, fog devices and the cloud provider) through complex weighted networks using the hop count between the fog devices and the data sources (sensors). Centrality indices are evaluated to select the fog devices that store the data generated by the sensors of the same type. The experiments were conducted to evaluate the improvements obtained with 3 centrality indices (eigenvector, betweenness centrality, and current flow) and four different types of network topologies (Barabasi-Albert, Grid, Random Euclidean, and Lobster). The results were validated by comparing between the network usage obtained with our placement proposal and the case of storing all the data in the cloud provider. Important benefits were measured in the case of the eigenvector centrality, reducing the number of transmitted packets to only the 31.84% of packets that are transmitted when the data is placed in the cloud provider. The other two centrality indices showed worst results.

Voltage stability and reliability is the major concern in radial distribution system (rdS). Customer far away from the substation faces voltage reliability and system fluctuation issues. These issues should be resolved through different methodologies under smart grid paradigm. Studies proved that loop and mesh distribution systems (MDS) show better voltage reliability and stability than rdS. A comparative study of different load models is done in terms of losses, voltage profile and cost of active power losses in both radial and mesh distribution system. Two different multiple-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) techniques PROMETHEE and Weighted product model (WPM) are used to identifying the best decision by considering active power loss, voltage and cost of active power cost attributes. A distinctive voltage stability index (VSI) is used to find the critical bus which is highly sensitive to voltage collapse. The bus having lowest VSI value is the most critical bus which is optimal location for siting the distributed generation unit (DG). VSI is evaluated for both radial and mesh distribution network. Different load models; constant power (CP) and constant impedance (CZ) models are used in this paper. The impacts of CZ and CP load models have been observed on voltage profiles and system losses on ieee 33 bus system.
