Semi-industrial pilot plants are the best experimental domain for advanced control systems testing with the real-world instrumentation. At the same time, inexpensive flexible process real-time simulators and virtual soft controllers are indispensable in the research and education field. Integrating control instrumentation of varying manufacturers, plant simulators, and virtual controllers into uniform system capable of flexible research and educational experiments is a complex problem to solve. A tool is needed to describe and organise knowledge on such integrated structure involving many communication channels and using distributed processing power. In the presented case-study, holarchy paradigm is applied, resulting in an untypical holonic multiagent system. Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have gained tremendous popularity in recent years due to the wide range Of applications envisioned - ranging from aerospace and defense to industrial and commercial. Although limited by communication and energy constraints, the low cost, small sensor nodes lend themselves to be deployed in large numbers to form a network with high spatial distribution. The overall effectiveness of the sensor network depends on how well the mutually contradicting objectives of conserving the limited on-board battery power and keeping the sensors awake for stimuli, are managed. In this paper, we have proposed an actor-critic based reinforcement learning mechanism that can be practically implemented on an embedded sensor with limited memory and processing power. Specifically, the contribution of this paper is the development of the value function (or critic/reinforcement function) that is implemented on each sensor node which aids in dynamic power scheduling based on different situations. The effectiveness of the proposed method has been demonstrated with real world experiments.

As global standards evolve on WPAN mobility, engineering design becomes more challenging for sensor nodes that form WPAN groups at random based on data sensing and acquisition (application) profiles. As sensor node platforms typically have computation blocks that can handle a minimal set of instructions (8 bit microcontrollers and less) and are greatly constrained (8KB static firmware footprint and 64KB RAM), the clear challenge in supporting multi-applications (and hence multi-radios) to enhance the sensor's functionalities is the implementation of different radio and application profile stacks on the embedded system. The main design bottlenecks ire system architecture optimization for multi-radio stacks, application-driven PHY/MAC emulation in the 8KB static firmware and of course, ensuring low power and high battery life. Our studies indicate that overcoming these embedded systems engineering bottlenecks in sensor node designs involves rethinking a few standards and raising the need to have new standards in the IETF LoWPAN WG. On this paper, we would like to show the need to introduce a new protocol in the LoWPAN WG derived from overcoming sonic of the sensor node design bottlenecks in seamless pervasive indoor environments.

Mapping neuronal networks activity of in-vitro cell cultures with microelectrode array (MEA) based systems, providing a spatial resolution down to cellular/sub-cellular levels and an adequate temporal resolution for resolving action potential propagation in both micro- and macro-circuitry, can not be achieved with the conventional implementation. New technological approaches for managing high-density electrode arrays, i.e. at least separations down to cellular dimensions, and for handling a large amount of channels, i.e. several thousands, are required. After evaluating the spatiotemporal resolutions requirements with custom designed MEAs on neuronal culture preparations, an approach based on image/video concepts reflected by both hardware and data management implementations is presented here. Our platform enables the high-resolution acquisition (full frame or zoomed), from arrays of 4096 microelectrodes integrated with separations of 21 mu m and with temporal resolutions down to 10 mu s, opening thus new perspectives for neuronal networks activity analysis.

Most of the sensor networks use a symmetric protocol since sensor networks are comprised of sensor nodes with restricted hardware. sensor networks with symmetric cryptography contain a global key stored on each sensor node and may be deployed in a hostile environment. When sensors nodes are compromised, an attacker can inject false sensing reports or false Message Authentication Codes into a legitimate report. A probabilistic voting-based filtering scheme has been proposed to combat these threats from compromised nodes. However, this scheme has the problem that it cannot re-establish a session key when some nodes of the source cluster or some intermediate cluster head have been compromised. The scheme cannot also control the position of verification nodes to minimize energy consumption as topology changes. Therefore, we propose a fuzzy-based en-route filtering scheme to deal with these problems. Through performance analysis and simulation, our result shows that the proposed scheme is much more efficient than the probabilistic voting-based scheme in many cases.

Cooperative control of multiple mobile robots is an attractive and challenging problem which has drawn considerable attention in the recent past. This paper introduces a scalable decentralized control algorithm to navigate a group of mobile robots (swarm) into a predefined shape in 2D space. The proposed architecture uses artificial forces to control mobile agents into the shape and spread them inside the shape while avoiding inter-member collisions. The theoretical analysis of the swarm behavior describes the motion of the complete swarm and individual members in relevant situations. We use computer simulated case studies to verify the theoretical assertions and to demonstrate the robustness of the swarm under external disturbances such as death of agents, change of shape etc.

The increasing use of distributed authentication architecture has made interoperability of systems an important issue. Interoperability of systems reflects the maturity of the technology and also improves confidence of users in the technology. Biometric systems are not immune to the concerns of interoperability. Interoperability of fingerprint sensors and its effect on the overall performance of the recognition System is an area of interest with a considerable amount of work directed towards it. This research analyzed effects of interoperability on error rates for fingerprint datasets captured from two optical sensors and a capacitive sensor when using a single commercially available fingerprint matching algorithm. The main aim of this research was to emulate a centralized storage and matching architecture with multiple acquisition stations. Fingerprints were collected from 44 individuals on all three sensors and interoperable False Reject Rates of less than .31% were achieved using two different enrolment strategies.

The dynamic en-route filtering scheme (DEF) proposed by Yu and Guan was designed to detect and drop false reports in wireless sensor networks. In this scheme the choice of a threshold value that limits the key dissemination is important since it represents a trade-off between detection power and overhead. A large threshold value increases the probability of detecting false reports but it consumes too much energy in the key dissemination phase. Thus, we should choose a threshold value such that it provides sufficient detection power, while consumes energy effectively. In this paper we propose a key dissemination limiting method for DEF. The threshold value to limit the key dissemination is determined by a fuzzy rule-based system with consideration of the energy level of the network, the number of keys in a cluster, and the distance from the base station (BS) to that cluster. The simulation results show that the proposed method can conserve energy, while it provides sufficient detection power.
