Future manufacturing is envisioned to be highly flexible and adaptable. New technologies for reconfigurable systems and their adaptations are preconditions for this vision. Without such solutions, engineering adaptations of Industrial Process Measurement and Control systems (IPMCS) will exceed the costs of engineered systems by far and the reuse of equipment will become inefficient. Especially the reconfiguration of control applications is not sufficiently solved. This paper gives an overview of the use of reconfiguration applications for downtimeless system evolution of control applications on basis of the standard IEC 61499. A new approach for the reconfiguration of IEC 61499 based control application and the corresponding modeling is discussed. This new method significantly increases engineering efficiency and reuse in component-based IPMCS.

Based on the research of MDS array code of size nxn in distributed storage system, in this paper, we present a novel encoding scheme called the F-code and prove that the column distance of the F-code is 3, i.e. F-code is a MDS array code given that odd number n is greater than 3 and does not include factor 3. And we also implement a novel decoding algorithm of the F-code. The algorithm only needs two decoding chains in each linear equation group and is able to recover all unknown symbols on two erasure columns. The analysis of F-code shows that our method extends the range of number n in nxn MDS array code and gets lower/reduction algorithmic complexity. Therefore, the reliability of a distributed storage system that features the F-code can be effectively reinforced.

In descriptions of loosely coupled process-like interactions of computational systems and especially in the literature on electronic business processes, the protocol notion is often used only informally. However its complete expressive power becomes effective only with a precise formalization. Based on Holzmann's protocol concept, a formal protocol definition is introduced, providing an inductive definition of the protocol transition relation. The protocol transition relation describes all possible interactions between system components which are formally specified as nondeterministic extended finite input output automata. The formal approach is illustrated by, means of a buying selling business interaction. Additionally, it is used to illustrate some semantic shortcomings of the "transaction pattern" approach, which tries to partition process-like interactions into one- and two-way interactions. In the discussion, the "loose" aspect of a protocol based interaction is treated. Motivated by the non-functional system relation defined by a protocol, it is proposed to classify the exchanged information between systems according to their logical relation in documents for (nondeterministic) protocols and I/O parameters for remote function calls.

This paper presents the design of the Fleck platform for building real-world outdoor sensor networks. Fleck1 and Fleck2 have been successfully deployed in several long-term outdoor sensor networks. The Fleck3 is the latest member of the platform. The power input stage of the Fleck3 has been simplified and now provides the ability to compute both the energy coming in and the energy being consumed. This makes possible the implementation of sophisticated distributed energy-aware applications. Both rechargeable batteries (with over-charge protection) and super-capacitors can be used as the primary source of power The Fleck3 incorporates a real-time clock. At the expense of a small current drain, the real-time clock provides several advantages. It allows the Fleck3 to be placed into very deep sleep, reducing the overall energy consumption down to 30 micro-Amps. It also allows the network as a whole to maintain a better sense of time and reduces the time-keeping overhead on the micro-controller The Fleck3 incorporates a packet-based radio from Nordic. This radio is more energy efficient than earlier generations and significantly reduces the communications overhead on the micro-controller It also provides a better radio front-end, with a range of about 1 km with normal, zero-gain quarter-wavelength antennas in the 915 MHz band. The Fleck platform supports a large variety of sensor interface boards, including a companion board incorporating a TPM chip from Atmel for applications where security is important. These features make the Fleck platform a very strong candidate for outdoor sensor networks.

Making a production system readily reconfigurable in a bid to adapt to very fluid demand profile is pertinent to cost reduction and facility utilization objectives of the system. We consider a production scheduling methodology based on federated agent architecture designed for a flexible job shop with dynamic demand. The interaction protocol within the social network is based on a facilitated auction mechanism. This model employs competition at job centers to maximize financial returns and uses cooperation among facilitator agents to minimize weighted tardiness.

A service provisioning system for distributed personalization with private data protection

Personalized services can provide significant user benefits since they adapt their behavior to better support the user. Personalized services use a variety of data related to the user to decide their behavior. Thus personalized service needs a provisioning system that can collect the data that impacts service behavior and allows selection of the most appropriate service. However, in the coming ubiquitous environment, some data necessary for determining service behavior might be unavailable due to two possible reasons. One is that the data does not exit. The other is that the data exists but cannot be accessed. For example, users do not want to disclose their personal information, and service providers do not also want to expose data related to their knowhow in services. This paper describes a new service provisioning system for distributed personalization with private data protection. Specifically, the system selects applicable services by assessing how well each candidate service behaves when some data is missing. It then executes those selected services while hiding the users' and providers' private data in a distributed manner. We first summarize the requirements for a personalized service system, and introduce our fundamental policies for the system. The two main components of our system are then described in detail. One component is a service assessment mechanism that can judge if a service can work without data that can be used for adaptation. The second component is a service execution mechanism that can utilize private data while still ensuring privacy. This component divides service logic and executes divided logic where necessary data is available. The paper finally describes our prototype implementation and its performance evaluation results. This paper proposes obstacle collision avoidance algorithm for a mobile robot. To navigate without colliding with obstacles the mobile robot uses both the vision system approach and edge detection approach using ultrasonic sensor. The vision system approach is used when the obstacle is located more than 2 meters away from the mobile robot, and the edge detection approach using ultrasonic sensor is used for detecting obstacle remains within 2 meters range. The collision avoidance algorithm proposed in this paper utilizes both the limit-cycle method and the nearness diagram navigation method. The proposed method is tested using Pioneer 2-DX mobile robot. Through experiment, the effectiveness of proposed methods for navigating a mobile robot in the dynamic environment is demonstrated.

While extensive studies have been carried out in the past several years for many sensor applications, they cannot be applied to the network with extremely low and intermittent connectivity, dubbed the Delay/Fault-Tolerant Mobile sensor Network (DFT-MSN). Without end-to-end connections due to sparse network density and sensor node mobility, routing in DFT-MSN becomes localized and ties closely to medium access control, which naturally calls for merging Layer 3 and Layer 2 protocols in order to reduce overhead and improve network efficiency. DFT-MSN is fundamentally an opportunistic network, where the communication links exist only with certain probabilities and become the scarcest resource. At the same time, the sensor nodes in DFT-MSN have very limited battery power like those in other sensor networks. Clearly, there is a tradeoff between link utilization and energy efficiency. To address this tradeoff, we develop a cross-layer data delivery protocol for DFT-MSN, which includes two phases, i.e., the asynchronous phase and the synchronous phase. In the first phase, the sender contacts its neighbors to identify a set of appropriate receivers. Since no central control exists, the communication in the first phase is contention-based. In the second phase, the sender gains channel control and multicasts its data message to the receivers. Furthermore, several optimization issues in these two phases are identified, with solutions provided to reduce the collision probability and to balance between link utilization and energy efficiency. Our results show that the proposed cross-layer data delivery protocol for DFT-MSN achieves a high message delivery ratio with low energy consumption and an acceptable delay. © 2007 ieee.

There are many schemes to increase energy efficiency in wireless sensor network as energy is precious resource. We focus on improving energy efficiency in sensing module while most of the previous works focus on the energy saving in communication module. When a sensor network continuously senses wide area, energy consumption is needed largely in sensing module. We consider a change rate of sensed data and adjust sensing period to reduce energy consumption while minimizing average delay between change of field and detection. Additionally, cooperation among neighbor nodes is essential to reduce energy consumption and the delay. Our dynamic sensing algorithm reduces the energy consumption and delay between change of field and detection. Our scheme controls sensing cycle based on change of sensing data and sensing cycle of neighbor nodes. It improves energy efficiency up to 90% and reduces the delay up to 84%, comparing to the previous works.

Current globalization associated to new customers' needs are decreasing products' life-cycle and pushing researchers to find new ways to provide shop floor assembly systems with agility to adapt to this new volatile reality. This document describes a multiagent implementation to control a shop floor system, with increased plug and play capabilities and providing fast system (re)configuration. In this approach, each shop floor component was agentified enhancing its adaptability and interaction competences to respond to environmental requests. Each agent representing a shop floor component can be aggregated to form a coalition that coordinates higher level processes (complex skills) based on the ones available in its members. An ontology is used to ensure an accurate information exchange, as well as to define the domain and relations between entities. This approach also shows how to adapt legacy systems to support innovative approaches.
