Wireless sensor Networks are now being considered for use in industrial automation and process control. These applications present different characteristics with respect to classical WSN application domains. In particular, the nodes may have high computational load due to the high sampling frequencies;moreover, they present real-time constraints, as data must be processed and transmitted with bounded delay. In this paper, we present RTNS, a simulator for distributed realtime systems that allows to model and simulate the temporal behavior of network protocols, real-time Operating System and distributed applications. The tool has been developed as a plug-in extension of the popular NS-2 simulator, hence it is possible to reuse most of the packages already available for NS-2. The aspects related to real-time Operating System, the overhead of interrupt handlers and protocol management, and the set of concurrent tasks executing on each node, are modeled using the RTSim simulator. With respect to a previously documented version, the package now has an extended scope and can model complex multi-hop scenarios. After presenting the simulator structure, we show how the tool can be used tomodel and simulate realistic WSN scenarios. Hereby, three examples are presented with the aim of showing how possible failures in the nodes or a load suddenly appearing in gateways connecting neighbor clusters for structured topologies can cause a worsening in the end-to-end transmission delays. We show that the adoption of a real-time Operating System in the nodes along with a proper scheduling policy for tasks can avoid (or at least keep under control) unpredictable effects in end-to-end delay. Dynamic deployment is one of the key topics addressed in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) study, which refers to coverage and detection probability of WSNs. This paper proposes a self-organizing algorithm for enhancing the coverage and detection probability for WSNs which consist of mobile and stationary nodes, which is so-called virtual force-directed particle swarm optimization (VFPSO). The proposed algorithm combines the virtual force (VF) algorithm with particle swarm optimization (PSO), where VF uses a judicious combination of attractive and repulsive forces to determine virtual motion paths and the rate of movement for sensors and PSO is suitable for solving multi-dimension function optimization in continuous space. In VFPSO, the velocity of each particle is updated according to not only the historical local and global optimal solutions but also the virtual forces of sensor nodes. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed VFPSO has better performance on regional convergence and global searching than PSO algorithm and can implement dynamic deployment of WSNs more efficiently and rapidly.

The management of real-time streaming data in large-scale collaborative applications presents major processing, communication and administrative challenges. To that end, an open-source RBNB DataTurbine provides an excellent basis for developing robust streaming data middleware. The current RBNB DataTurbine streaming data middleware system satisfies a core set of critical infrastructure requirements including reliable data transport, the promotion of sensors and sensor streams to first-class objects, a framework for the integration of heterogeneous instruments, and a comprehensive suite of services for data management, routing, synchronization, monitoring, and visualization. As a part of PRAGMA telescience group, in collaboration with the National Center for High-Performance computing (NCHC) Taiwan, researchers at the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) deployed RBNB DataTurbine-based system to acquire data from underwater cameras (in the ocean) at Kenting. More specifically, we describe a system that integrates sensors (underwater video cameras) with computing and storage Grids to create a complete fabric for conducting e-Science. The system is currently used for observation by marine research scientists at the Research Center for Biodiversity. Academia Sinica in Taiwan. The described system increased performance and availability of the captured videos and we are, so far, pleased with its results.

In 1991, Technical Committee 65 (TC65) of the international Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) approved a New Work Item (NWI) for the development of an international standard for the use of software objects known as Function Blocks (FBs) in distributed Industrial-Process Measurement and Control systems (dIPMCS). The need for this new standard resulted out of several studies and research programs that have been started or conducted in the late eighties and early nineties of the last century. IEC 61499 got finally standardized in January 2005. Before that, since 2000, it was available in the form of a so-called Public Available Specification (PAS). Although IEC 61499 has been available for so long, up to now most published work on it has been academic or resulted only in prototypical test cases. Most activities around the IEC 61499 standard have been in standardization of the execution environment and definition of semantics. Some current research is in pursuing design and coding tools. This paper gives and overview about the past and present activities and implementations related to IEC 61499 and discusses the potential of this new standard for future application scenarios.

Tremendous advances in embedded systems, sensors and wireless communications technology have made it possible to build large-scale wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Due to their potential applications,WSNs have attracted significant attention in the industry, academic, and government organizations. In particular, by commanding a large number of distributed and coordinated sensor nodes, WSNs can effectively act as the human-physical world interface in future digital world through sensing and actuating. However, the inherent characteristics of WSNs typified by extremely scarce resources (e.g., bandwidth, CPU, memory and battery power), high degree of uncertainty, and lack of centralized control pose significant challenges in providing the desired quality, information assurance, reliability, and security. This is particularly important for mission critical applications that involve information intensive WSNs including video sensors. In this talk, we will examine the uncertainty-driven unique challenges and key research problems in information intensive wireless sensor networks in the areas of aggregation, clustering, routing, data dissemination, coverage and connectivity, and security. We will present our novel solutions to some of these problems and conclude with future directions.

With the model of reducing robustness for the distributed multi-agent system, the robustness analysis problem of the distributed artificial immune system (DAIS) was reduced into robustness analysis problems of all the independent modules of the system. The artificial immune system (AIS) included the module of modeling the normal model, the module of detecting selfs and non-selfs, the module of recognizing known non-selfs, the module of learning unknown non-selfs, the module of eliminating non-selfs and the module of repairing the damaged system. After analyzing the robustness of the artificial immune system with the problem reduction method, the model of reducing robustness of the distributed artificial immune system was built. Proved by some theorems, the model of reducing robustness can reduce and simplify the robustness analysis problem of the distributed artificial immune system, and the problem can be solved after the robustness analysis problems of all the modules are solved. Therefore, the model of reducing robustness of the distributed artificial immune system is a useful tool to analyze robustness, and provides an effective approach for analyzing robustness of complex artificial immune system. © 2007 ieee.

We propose a semi-structured peer-to-peer (P2P) network for file sharing built from a structured P2P network as a basis for file search together with an unstructured P2P network for access load balancing. This semi-structured P2P network adopts a structured P2P network capable of providing reliable file search as its base structure. In addition, it makes lightly loaded nodes in the structured network construct unstructured P2P networks over which heavily loaded nodes can spread their access load. The semi-structured P2P network is required to dynamically reconstruct its network topology according to changes in node loadings and file search performance. We also propose an autonomic, distributed, and cooperative method for dynamically altering the network topology. In simulation experiments, we first obtain a network topology that ensures reliable file search and is optimal in terms of access load balancing. This is carried out under the (idealized) assumption that the load state of all nodes in the network can be obtained in advance. We also show that the proposed topology reconstruction method yields network topologies with almost the same performance as the optimal configuration. © 2007 ieee.

Wireless sensor networks are usually deployed to operate for a long period of time. Because nodes are battery-operated, they eventually run out of power and new nodes need to be periodically deployed to assure network connectivity. This type of networks is referred to as Multi-phase WSN in the literature [1]. Current key pre-distribution schemes, such as [2] and [3], are not adapted to multi-stage WSN. With these schemes, the security of the WSN degrades with time, since the proportion of corrupted links gradually increases. In this paper, we propose a new pre-distribution scheme adapted to multi-phase WSN. In the proposed scheme, the pre-distributed keys have limited lifetimes and are refreshed periodically. As a result, a network that is temporarily attacked (i.e. the attacker is active only during a limited amount of time) automatically self-heals, i.e. recovers its initial state when the attack stops. In contrast, with existing schemes, an attacker that corrupts a certain amount of nodes compromises a given fraction of the total number of secure channels. This ratio remains constant until the end of the network, even if the attacker stops its action. Furthermore, with our scheme, a network that is constantly attacked (i.e. the attacker regularly corrupts nodes of the network, without stopping) is much less impacted than a network that uses existing key pre-distribution protocols. With these schemes, the number of compromised links constantly increases until all the links are compromised. With our proposal, the proportion of compromised links is limited and constant.

In environments where node density is massive, placement is heterogeneous and lot of sensory traffic with redundancy is produced;waste of resources such as bandwidth and energy occurs. This waste of resources minimize the network life time. Numerous routing schemes have been proposed to address such problems. They all tend to focus on similar direction, i.e. to find minimum energy path to increase the life time of the network. In this paper, we argue that it is not always wise to use the minimum energy path. Nodes along the optimal path will be used rapidly, burn out energy aggressively and eventually die hastily creating communication holes in network. This brings rapid change in the topology resulting in increased latency, poor connectivity and production of heterogeneous subnets. Therefore, utilizing suboptimal paths is encouraged for load balancing among sensor nodes. We unmitigated our efforts to augment the node life time in sensor network by frequent use of suboptimal paths, and reducing redundant sensory network traffic. Towards this end, we propose an agent-based routing approach that incorporates static and mobile agents. Static agent is responsible for calculating and maintaining the set of optimal paths. Mobile agent accounts for performing data processing and making data aggregation decisions at nodes in the network rather than bring data back to a central processor (sink). To demonstrate the performance evaluation, a prototype of a simulator is implemented.

The architecture of uniform information space of Republic of Uzbekistan by a hierarchical principle on the basis distributed mobile IT systems is stated. For the information space of regional management which is formed as set of the distributed databases and knowledge, storehouses of the information, computing centers, managing systems, and also applied Internet-portals and systems for representation of modern e-services the task of providing of reliability of inputting, transfer and processing of the information of a various nature and format is put and solved at a level of the users of network services of an applied level (Applied, Presentation, Session levels of OSI model). The algorithms based on principles of statistical and dictionary coding are developed for the control of the information reliability at the expense of statistical redundancy. There are used the schemes of coding by methods of Huffman, Lempel-Ziv-Welch, transformation of Burrows-Wheeler and arithmetical coding.
