Bluetooth is a promising short-range radio network technology. We present a low cost and easily deployed, scalable infrastructure for indoor location-based computing of mobile devices based on the Bluetooth technology. The system consists of 2 main components, namely the Bluetooth (BT) sensor System and the Central Navigation System which have been developed using the JDK 1.6. The Bluetooth sensor System allows mobile devices whose Bluetooth mode is set to discoverable, to be scanned and detected, and they receive customizable text message and other relevant files (maps, sound files, video clips) of their positioning information, e.g. room identity. The positioning information is also sent to the Central Navigation System which in turn displays and updates the navigation map. The system is also used to track the movement of different BT mobile devices within the implemented environment.

In wireless sensor networks (WSNs), nodes assist each other by passing data and control packets from one node to another. In a complex WSN, malicious nodes are well disguised so that they can purposely attack the whole network using the natural cooperations of sensors. In additional, the error-prone of sensors always cause the system instability of WSNs. To overcome this, we study trust mechanism in the human society and introduce it into a WSN. We also construct a trust model in accordance with the characteristics of a WSN. Based on trust model, we propose a power-aware and reliable algorithm for sensor selection. The simulation results show that our algorithm can improve the system stability of sensor networks, and efficiently defend against the attacks of malicious nodes.

Today, the high cost of supercomputers in the one hand and the need for large-scale computational resources on the other hand, has led to use network of computational resources known as Grid. Numerous research groups in universities, research labs, and industries around the world are now working on a type of Grid called Computational Grids that enable aggregation of distributed resources for solving large-scale data intensive problems in science, engineering, and commerce. Several institutions and universities have started research and teaching programs on Grid computing as part of their parallel and distributed computing curriculum. To better use tremendous capabilities of this distributed system, effective and efficient scheduling algorithms are needed. In this paper, we introduce a new scheduling algorithm based on two conventional scheduling algorithms, Min-Min and Max-Min, to use their cons and at the same time, cover their pros. It selects between the two algorithms based on standard deviation of the expected completion time of tasks on resources. We evaluate our scheduling heuristic, the Selective algorithm, within a grid simulator called GridSim. We also compared our approach to its two basic heuristics. The experimental results show that the new heuristic can lead to significant performance gain for a variety of scenarios.

Publish/subscribe (Pub/Sub) systems have been used in traditional distributed computing applications to provide effective and efficient event services. Recently, the design of Pub/Sub systems are proposed for wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Some of the proposed Pub/Sub protocols address the issue of establishing event delivery path with low routing cost by using geographic information. However, they have not considered how to reduce redundant event delivery, which may cause high resource consumption and poor system scalability. In this paper, we propose protocols which address both issues. More specifically, our protocols use geographic information to save routing cost, and meanwhile reduce redundant event delivery by letting the subscribers share the event delivery paths. Three highly scalable and efficient Pub/Sub protocols for WSNs, namely shortest delivery path (SDP), shortest delivery path with lower delivery overhead (SDP-LDO), and lowest delivery overhead (LDO), are designed to achieve different performance goals. The results of theoretical and experimental evaluation show that the proposed protocols can significantly improve the resource efficiency and scalability of a Pub/Sub system compared to the previous solutions. Our protocols can also be used to achieve a good tradeoff between the costs of event subscribing and event delivery.

Many self-configuration problems that occur in sensor networks, such as clustering or operator placement for in-network data aggregation, can be modeled as facility location problems. Unfortunately, existing distributed facility location algorithms are hardly applicable to multi-hop sensor networks. Based on an existing centralized algorithm, we therefore devise equivalent distributed versions which, to our knowledge, represent the first distributed approximations of the facility location problem that can be practicably implemented in multihop sensor networks with local communication. Through simulation studies, we demonstrate that, for typical instances derived from sensor-network configuration problems, the algorithms terminate in only few communication rounds, the runtime does not increase with the network size, and, finally, that our implementation requires only local communication confined to small network neighborhoods. In addition, we propose simple extensions to our algorithms to support dynamic networks with varying link qualities and node additions and deletions. Using link quality traces collected from a real sensor network deployment, we demonstrate the effectiveness of our algorithms in realistic multi-hop sensor networks.

As global standards evolve on WPAN mobility, engineering design becomes more challenging for sensor nodes that form WPAN groups at random based on data sensing and acquisition (application) profiles. As sensor node platforms typically have computation blocks that can handle a minimal set of instructions (8 bit microcontrollers and less) and are greatly constrained (8KB static firmware footprint and 64KB RAM), the clear challenge in supporting multi-applications (and hence multi-radios) to enhance the sensor 's functionalities is the implementation of different radio and application profile stacks on the embedded system. The main design bottlenecks are system architecture optimization for multi-radio stacks, application-driven PHY/MAC emulation in the 8KB static firmware and of course, ensuring low power and high battery life. Our studies indicate that overcoming these embedded systems engineering bottlenecks in sensor node designs involves rethinking a few standards and raising the need to have new standards in the IETF LoWPAN WG. On this paper, we would like to show the need to introduce a new protocol in the LoWPAN WG derived from overcoming some of the sensor node design bottlenecks in seamless pervasive indoor environments.

In existing distributed target tracking systems, usually the next tasking sensor node is selected from the candidate sensor nodes by the current tasking sensor node. In this paper we demonstrate by a real test-bed that such approach may not achieve satisfactory tracking performance due to the long computation time needed for sensor scheduling. We develop a distributed target tracking system implementing a novel competition based distributed sensor scheduling scheme where a candidate sensor node with highest predicted tracking accuracy will be elected as the new tasking sensor with highest probability. The system hardware and software architectures are described and the superior tracking performances of the system are demonstrated with experimental comparison with existing sensor scheduling schemes.

Most existing mutual exclusion algorithms for mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) adopt a token-based approach. In traditional wired networks, timeout-based mechanisms are commonly used to detect token losses. However, in MANETs, it is difficult to set a proper timeout value due to the network dynamics. In this paper, we propose a dual-token-based mutual exclusion algorithm, which can tolerate token losses without using timeout. Two tokens are concurrently circulated in the system to monitor each other by using sequence numbers. If one token is lost, the other token can detect the loss and regenerate a new token. Simulations have been carried out to evaluate the effectiveness and performance of the proposed algorithm in comparison with the timeout-based approach. The results show that the timeout-based algorithm may falsely claim the loss of a token, thus cannot guarantee the correctness of mutual exclusion algorithms. On the contrary, our proposed algorithm can avoid false detection of token losses and satisfy all the correctness requirements of mutual exclusion, though it costs a bit more messages and longer time.

An important class of sensor network applications aims at estimating the spatiotemporal behavior of a physical phenomenon, such as temperature variations over an area of interest. These networks thereby essentially act as a distributed sampling system. However, unlike in the event detection class of sensor networks, the notion of sensing range is largely meaningless in this case. As a result, existing techniques to exploit sensing redundancy for event detection, which rely on the existence of such sensing range, become unusable. Instead, this paper presents a new method to exploit redundancy for the sampling class of applications, which adaptively selects the smallest set of reporting sensors to act as sampling points. By projecting the sensor space onto an equivalent Hilbert space, this method ensures sufficiently accurate sampling and interpolation, without a priori knowledge of the statistical structure of the physical process. Results are presented using synthetic sensor data and show significant reductions in the number of active sensors.

Wireless sensor networks are often densely deployed for environmental monitoring applications. Collecting raw data from these networks can lead to excessive energy consumption. Thus using the spatial and temporal correlations that exist between adjacent nodes we appoint a few as representative nodes that perform in-network aggregation. This reduces the total number of transmissions. Our distributed scheduling algorithm autonomously assigns a particular node to perform aggregation and reassigns schedules when network topology changes. These topology changes are detected using cross-layer information from the underlying MAC layer. We also present theoretical performance estimates and upper bounds of our algorithm and evaluate it by implementing the algorithm on actual sensor nodes, demonstrating an energy-saving of up to 80% compared to raw data collection.
