We introduce a class of anchoritic sensor networks, where communications between sensor nodes are undesirable or infeasible due to, e.g., harsh environments, energy constraints, or security considerations. Instead, we assume that the sensors buffer the measurements over the lifetime and report them directly to a sink without necessarily requiring communications. Upon retrieval of the reports, all sensor data measurements will be available to a central entity for post *** algorithm is based on the further assumption that some of the data fields that are being observed by the sensors can be modeled as a local (i.e. having decaying spatial correlations) stochastic process; if not, then choose an auxiliary field, e.g., carefully engineered random signals intentionally generated by arranged devices, "cloud shadows" cast on the ground, or animal heat. The sensor nodes record the measurements, or a function of the measurements, e.g., "1" when the measured signal is above a threshold, and "0" otherwise. These time-stamped sequences are ultimately transferred to the sink. The localization problem is then approached by analyzing the correlations between these sequences at pairs of *** for applications, we discuss the localization scheme for large-scaled sensor networks deployed on the seabed and study a two-tiered architecture that organizes deaf sensors with local masters.

An elegant solution to the problem of instrumenting paralyzed limbs with artificial sensors for use with closed-loop FES systems is to use natural sensors, such as muscle afferent activity as feedback for the artificial controller. Longitudinal intra-fascicular electrodes (LIFEs) are electrodes that have shown promise in this application. As a peripheral nerve interface, they are designed to be placed inside the peripheral nerve, but near potentially active muscles and the stimulating electrode. Artefacts from EMG and stimulation remain limiting factors in signal acquisition. Here, we present a technique for improving the signal-to-noise ratio which consists of wrapping a shield around the implant site of the recording electrode. Preliminary results obtained during in-vivo experiments suggest that the shielding increases the level of the neural signal in the recordings.

This study proposes a new parameter for evaluating longevity of wireless sensor networks after showing that the existing parameters do not properly evaluate the performance of algorithms in increasing longevity. This study also proposes an ant inspired Collaborative Routing Algorithm for Wireless sensor Network Longevity (CRAWL) that has scalability and adaptability features required in most wireless sensor networks. Using the proposed longevity metrics and implementing the algorithm in simulations, it is shown that CRAWL is much more adaptive to non-uniform distribution of available energy in sensor networks. The performance of CRAWL is compared to that of a non-collaborative algorithm. Both algorithms perform equally well when the available energy distribution is uniform but when the distribution is non-uniform, CRAWL is found to have 20.2% longer network life. CRAWL performance degraded by just 10.1% when the available energy was unevenly distributed in the sensor network proving the algorithms adaptability.

We develop a practical, distributed algorithm to detect events, identify measurement errors, and infer missing readings in ecological applications of wireless sensor networks. To address issues of non-stationarity in environmental data streams, each sensor-processor learns statistical distributions of differences between its readings and those of its neighbors, as well as between its current and previous measurements. Scalar physical quantities such as air temperature, soil moisture, and light flux naturally display a large degree of spatiotemporal coherence, which gives a spectrum of fluctuations between adjacent or consecutive measurements with small variances. This feature permits stable estimation over a small state space. The resulting probability distributions of differences, estimated online in real time, are then used in statistical significance tests to identify rare events. Utilizing the spatio-temporal distributed nature of the measurements across the network, these events are classified as single mode failures - usually corresponding to measurement errors at a single sensor - or common mode events. The event structure also allows the network to automatically attribute potential measurement errors to specific sensors and to correct them in real time via a combination of current measurements at neighboring nodes and the statistics of differences between them. Compared to methods that use Bayesian classification of raw data streams at each sensor, this algorithm is more storage-efficient, learns faster, and is more robust in the face of non-stationary phenomena. Field results from a wireless sensor network (sensor Web) deployed at Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge are presented.

In this paper, we study the two-tiered wireless sensor network (WSN) architecture and propose the optimal cluster association algorithm for it to maximize the overall network lifetime. A two-tiered WSN is formed by number of small sensor nodes (SNs), powerful application nodes (ANs), and base-stations (BSs, or gateways). SNs capture, encode, and transmit relevant information to ANs, which then send the combined information to BSs. Assuming the locations of the SNs, ANs, and BSs are fixed, we consider how to associate the SNs to ANs such that the network lifetime is maximized while every node meets its bandwidth requirement. When the SNs are homogeneous (e.g., same bandwidth requirement), we give optimal algorithms to maximize the lifetime of the WSNs; when the SNs are heterogeneous, we give a 2-approximation algorithm that produces a network whose lifetime is within 1/2 of the optimum. We also present algorithms to dynamically update the cluster association when the network topology changes. Numerical results are given to demonstrate the efficiency and optimality of the proposed approaches. In simulation study, comparing network lifetime, our algorithm outperforms other heuristics almost twice.

sensory information coming from natural sensors and being propagated on afferent nerve fibers could be used as feedback for a more efficient closed-loop control of a functional electrical stimulation system. In order to extract and separate these signals according to their nerve fascicule origins, we propose a new architecture of a multipolar cuff electrode and an optimized integrated acquisition circuit. Concerning the electrode, we propose a specific configuration using a large number of poles in order to both reject parasitic signals, such as electromyogram and provide a maximum of recording channels in order to help the signal localization inside the nerve. Moreover, specific low-level analog signal processing was designed to extract the expected low-amplitude signal from its noisy environment. This signal processing is implemented in an ASIC that has to be implanted close to the electrode to achieve the best signal-to-noise ratio

Bipedal walking is a quasi-cyclic activity where the movements of the ipsilateral leg and contralateral leg are time shifted for 50 percent of the gait cycle. Hemiplegia, a most common consequence of cerebro-vascular accident, results with unilateral disability; thereby the pattern of the paralyzed leg is modified, and in many cases prevents or greatly decreases the ability to walk normally. One possible method of restoring the movements of the paralyzed leg is functional electrical stimulation (FES), that is, patterned electrical activation of sensory-motor systems of the paralyzed leg. We developed a new method that combines several techniques that have been tested for control of FES: 1) optimal control based on a customized model of the individual using the system, 2) modeling of the plant as a nonlinear oscillator, and 3) triggering of the oscillator from the sensor that is representative of a specific phase during the gait cycle of the healthy leg. The optimal control is used to create the basic pattern for stimulation; the oscillator, modulated by the sensory measurements, brings to the control information related to the rhythm.

This paper addresses the problem of improving state estimation of dynamic industrial processes in real time for single, double, triple and quadruple fault detection and diagnosis purposes using multi-sensor data fusion strategy. The proposed monitoring systems track the process states to infer its operating conditions utilizing a decentralized Kalman filtering methodology based on state-vector fusion technique. The paper considers both the synchronous and asynchronous multi-sensor scenarios to explore their relevant data fusion problems. The performances of the resulting monitoring systems are investigated under the two possible cases of time-delayed measurements due to communication delay and multi-rate sensors. The state-vector data fusion technique is also adopted to integrate the individual state feature coming from the distributed extended Kalman filter (EKFs) so as to extract the necessary global detection and diagnostic information. The feasibility and effectiveness of the presented algorithms are demonstrated through simulation studies on a continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR) benchmark problem.

Consider a network where all nodes share a single broadcast domain such as a wired broadcast network. Nodes take sensor readings but individual sensor readings are not the most important pieces of data in the system. Instead, we are interested in aggregated quantities of the sensor readings such as minimum and maximum values, the number of nodes and the median among a set of sensor readings on different nodes. In this paper we show that a prioritized medium access control (MAC) protocol may advantageously be exploited to efficiently compute aggregated quantities of sensor readings. In this context, we propose a distributed algorithm that has a very low time and message-complexity for computing certain aggregated quantities. Importantly, we show that if every sensor node knows its geographical location, then sensor data can be interpolated with our novel distributed algorithm, and the message-complexity of the algorithm is independent of the number of nodes. Such an interpolation of sensor data can be used to compute any desired function;for example the temperature gradient in a room (e.g., industrial plant) densely populated with sensor nodes, or the gas concentration gradient within a pipeline or traffic tunnel.

Freshwater lakes provide a number of important ecosystem services such as supply of drinking water, support of biotic diversity, transportation of commercial goods, and opportunity for recreation. Wireless sensor networks allow continuous, fine-grained, in situ measurements of key variables such as water temperature, dissolved gases, pH, conductivity, and chlorophyll. Instrumenting lakes with sensors capable of sampling environmental variables is becoming a standard practice. Furthermore, many limnologists around the world are interested in getting access to and performing research on data collected from lakes around the globe to provide local, regional and even global understanding of lake ecosystems. To that end, a number of limnologists, information technology experts, and engineers have joined forces to create a new, grassroots, international network, the Global Lake Ecological Observatory Network. One of our goals is to build a global scalable, persistent network of lake ecology observatories. However, implementing and designing technology that meets requirements of a large-scale distributed observing systems such as GLEON has, thus far, been challenging and instructive. In this paper, we describe several key conceptual challenges in building GLEON network. We also describe several practical issues and lessons learned during operation of a typical GLEON site.
