Transmission power control at individual nodes is used in wireless ad hoc networks for reducing interference and energy consumption. In this paper, two new distributed node-based power control techniques have been proposed to cope up with two different situations, one for lifetime-critical networks with nodes having less mobility, and the other for networks with mobility-prone nodes. The first algorithm is based on the idea of minimum spanning tree (MST) computation. It takes O(n) rounds (n is the total number of nodes), and results better optimization in terms of node power levels. The lower transmission power of nodes makes it suitable for lifespan-critical networks. But O(n) time complexity limits its application to networks. with nodes having high mobility causing frequent topology changes. However, it will be suitable for wireless sensor networks where, after the deployment, nodes become more or less static but lifetime remains to be a critical issue. The second one is based on neighbor pruning scheme that completes transmission power assignment in two rounds of message passing only. Though in terms of the node power levels, the first algorithm performs better, with less computational complexity the second one can easily adapt to the topology changes caused by the mobility of the nodes, and hence is suitable for mobile networks. Simulation studies have been done to compare the performances in terms of different performance metrics.

This paper describes a preliminary attempt at using Semantic Grid paradigm, especially service-oriented modeling approach, for distributed management of multidisciplinary design knowledge, enabling to add semantics to grid services to endow them with capabilities needed for their successful deployment and reuse in multidisciplinary collaborative design. Domain resource ontology is identified as the key enabler to a meaningful agent communication for collaborative work among multidisciplinary organizations. A semantic-driven workflow representation adopted in the proposed service-oriented modeling framework can speed up the design process of a complex engineering system by composing the process with existing multidisciplinary design resources intelligently. The proposed approach has been evaluated with a multidisciplinary collaborative design example of metal stamping progressive die.

A radically new approach will be described for the fully distributed and dynamic management of advanced crisis relief operations and missions. It is based on the installation of a universal "social" module in many existing and massively used data processing and control devices, including (but not limited to) internet hosts, laptops, mobile robots and mobile phones. These modules can collectively interpret a special scenario language while exchanging higher-level program code with accompanying data and control in parallel. This can dynamically integrate any scattered post-disaster human and technical resources into an operable distributed system which, from one side, is effectively supervised externally, and from the other side, is capable of solving complex self-analysis, coordination, survivability, relief, and reconstruction problems autonomously.

distributed event-based middleware (DEBM) provides a basis for the interoperation of autonomous components in large-scale systems. Transactions ensure the atomic and reliable execution of operations that involve interconnected clients. Integrating transactions and DEBM is a challenging software design problem with important applications. This paper presents the Hermes transaction service (HTS), a service that supports event-driven applications with transactional requirements. HTS uses transaction-context propagation via event notifications, where the contexts of publishers and subscribers are interrelated within a mixed transaction. Clients may opt to be compensatable or non-compensatable. Optional anonymity of transaction participants is supported through hash-based set memberships

Wireless sensor networks (WSN) are increasingly become viable solutions to many challenging problems and will successively be deployed in many areas in the future such as in environmental monitoring, business, and military applications. The huge challenge in WSN is due to inherent resource and computing constraints. Because the sensor nodes are battery powered, increasing the autonomous lifetime of a WSN is a challenging optimization problem. Transmission of data is one of the most energy expensive tasks a node undertakes - using data compression to reduce the number of bits sent reduces energy expended for transmission. Data compression which highly reduces the communication overhead by aggregating and compressing data packets is performed at intermediate sensor nodes. However, deploying new technology, without security in mind has often proved to be unreasonably dangerous. The problem of securing these networks emerges more and more as a hot topic. Symmetric key cryptography is commonly seen as infeasible on such networks. Public key cryptography has its own key distribution problem. In contrast to this prejudice this paper presents a method to increase the lifetime of a WSN by minimizing the energy cost of transporting information from a set of sources nodes to the sink nodes and for achieving security we have used a new public-key encryption technology called identity-based encryption (IBE) which allows to calculate a public key directly from a user's identity. By calculating public keys instead of generating them randomly, many of the difficulties that make encryption technology difficult to deploy and maintain are eliminated, making encrypted communications much easier to implement than in the past.

Wireless sensor networks consist of a large number of low-power, small-scale sensors with limited processing and communication capabilities. Such networks are usually applied to gather data from interested area or specific environment and deliver to remote users for analyzing or monitoring. Because of sensing devices are usually powered by batteries, it is a great challenge to meet the performance of long system lifetime required by different applications under limited power. In the densely deployed sensor networks, the area or data sensed by neighboring sensors may overlap. In recent researches, coverage preserved node scheduling has been proposed to conserve power and provide sensing reliability. By selecting appropriate sensors into sleep state, the system lifetime can be extended without losing coverage. In this paper, we propose a cluster-based coverage-preserved node scheduling scheme. We divide sensors into clusters and group cluster members into sponsor sets based on neighbor information. The proposed approach distributes the workloads among sponsor set nodes and ensures sufficient coverage as long as possible.

The problem of identifying trustworthy information on the World Wide Web is becoming increasingly acute as new tools such as wikis and blogs simplify and democratize publications. Wikipedia is the most extraordinary example of this phenomenon and, although a few mechanisms have been put in place to improve contributions quality, trust in Wikipedia content quality has been seriously questioned. We thought that a deeper understanding of what in general defines high-standard and expertise in domains related to Wikipedia i.e. content quality in a collaborative environment - mapped onto Wikipedia elements would lead to a complete set of mechanisms to sustain trust in Wikipedia context. Our evaluation, conducted on about 8,000 articles representing 65% of the overall Wikipedia editing activity, shows that the new trust evidence that we extracted from Wikipedia allows us to transparently and automatically compute trust values to isolate articles of great or low quality.

In this paper, we present the design and implementation of a multi-robot cooperation framework to collectively execute inter-dependent tasks of an overall complex mission requiring diverse capabilities. Given a heterogeneous team of robots and task dependencies, the proposed framework provides a distributed mechanism for assigning tasks to robots in an order that efficiently completes the mission. The approach is robust to unreliable communication and robot failures. It is a distributed auction-based approach, and therefore scalable. In order to obtain optimal allocations, effective bid evaluations are needed. Additionally to maintain optimality in noisy environments, dynamic re-allocations of tasks are needed as implemented in dynamic task selection and coalition maintenance scheme that we propose. Real-time contingencies are handled by recovery routines, called Plan B precautions in our framework. Here, in this paper, we present performance results of our framework for robustness in simulations that include variable message loss rates and robot failures. Experiments illustrate robustness of our approach against several contingencies.

Wireless sensor networks are emerging as a promising solution for various types of futuristic applications both for military and public. Security in wireless sensor networks is very crucial as these networks are expected mainly to operate in the hazardous and hostile environments. Efficient key management could guarantee authenticity and confidentiality of the data exchanged among the nodes in the network. In this paper, we propose an improved and efficient key pre-distribution scheme for wireless sensor networks. Our scheme significantly increases the storage efficiency and security than that of the previously proposed scheme based on LU decomposition. It also ensures node-to-node mutual authentication in a way that an eavesdropper cannot harm the network by monitoring the traffic flows in the network. We also present detailed performance analysis and compare our scheme with the existing schemes. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2006.
