Wireless sensor networks (WSN) are increasingly become viable solutions to many challenging problems and will successively be deployed in many areas in the future such as in environmental monitoring, business, and military applications. The huge challenge in WSN is due to inherent resource and computing constraints. Because the sensor nodes are battery powered, increasing the autonomous lifetime of a WSN is a challenging optimization problem. Transmission of data is one of the most energy expensive tasks a node undertakes - using data compression to reduce the number of bits sent reduces energy expended for transmission. Data compression which highly reduces the communication overhead by aggregating and compressing data packets is performed at intermediate sensor nodes. However, deploying new technology, without security in mind has often proved to be unreasonably dangerous. The problem of securing these networks emerges more and more as a hot topic. Symmetric key cryptography is commonly seen as infeasible on such networks. Public key cryptography has its own key distribution problem. In contrast to this prejudice this paper presents a method to increase the lifetime of a WSN by minimizing the energy cost of transporting information from a set of sources nodes to the sink nodes and for achieving security we have used a new public-key encryption technology called identity-based encryption (IBE) which allows to calculate a public key directly from a user's identity. By calculating public keys instead of generating them randomly, many of the difficulties that make encryption technology difficult to deploy and maintain are eliminated, making encrypted communications much easier to implement than in the past.

Wireless sensor networks consist of a large number of low-power, small-scale sensors with limited processing and communication capabilities. Such networks are usually applied to gather data from interested area or specific environment and deliver to remote users for analyzing or monitoring. Because of sensing devices are usually powered by batteries, it is a great challenge to meet the performance of long system lifetime required by different applications under limited power. In the densely deployed sensor networks, the area or data sensed by neighboring sensors may overlap. In recent researches, coverage preserved node scheduling has been proposed to conserve power and provide sensing reliability. By selecting appropriate sensors into sleep state, the system lifetime can be extended without losing coverage. In this paper, we propose a cluster-based coverage-preserved node scheduling scheme. We divide sensors into clusters and group cluster members into sponsor sets based on neighbor information. The proposed approach distributes the workloads among sponsor set nodes and ensures sufficient coverage as long as possible.

The problem of identifying trustworthy information on the World Wide Web is becoming increasingly acute as new tools such as wikis and blogs simplify and democratize publications. Wikipedia is the most extraordinary example of this phenomenon and, although a few mechanisms have been put in place to improve contributions quality, trust in Wikipedia content quality has been seriously questioned. We thought that a deeper understanding of what in general defines high-standard and expertise in domains related to Wikipedia i.e. content quality in a collaborative environment - mapped onto Wikipedia elements would lead to a complete set of mechanisms to sustain trust in Wikipedia context. Our evaluation, conducted on about 8,000 articles representing 65% of the overall Wikipedia editing activity, shows that the new trust evidence that we extracted from Wikipedia allows us to transparently and automatically compute trust values to isolate articles of great or low quality.

In this paper, we present the design and implementation of a multi-robot cooperation framework to collectively execute inter-dependent tasks of an overall complex mission requiring diverse capabilities. Given a heterogeneous team of robots and task dependencies, the proposed framework provides a distributed mechanism for assigning tasks to robots in an order that efficiently completes the mission. The approach is robust to unreliable communication and robot failures. It is a distributed auction-based approach, and therefore scalable. In order to obtain optimal allocations, effective bid evaluations are needed. Additionally to maintain optimality in noisy environments, dynamic re-allocations of tasks are needed as implemented in dynamic task selection and coalition maintenance scheme that we propose. Real-time contingencies are handled by recovery routines, called Plan B precautions in our framework. Here, in this paper, we present performance results of our framework for robustness in simulations that include variable message loss rates and robot failures. Experiments illustrate robustness of our approach against several contingencies.

Wireless sensor networks are emerging as a promising solution for various types of futuristic applications both for military and public. Security in wireless sensor networks is very crucial as these networks are expected mainly to operate in the hazardous and hostile environments. Efficient key management could guarantee authenticity and confidentiality of the data exchanged among the nodes in the network. In this paper, we propose an improved and efficient key pre-distribution scheme for wireless sensor networks. Our scheme significantly increases the storage efficiency and security than that of the previously proposed scheme based on LU decomposition. It also ensures node-to-node mutual authentication in a way that an eavesdropper cannot harm the network by monitoring the traffic flows in the network. We also present detailed performance analysis and compare our scheme with the existing schemes. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2006.

In this paper we explore the design of multi-modal MAC for wireless ad hoc and sensor networks that dynamically adapt its behavior in order to minimize the energy to delivery ratio under a wide variety of network loads. The prime motivation is to balance the inherent trade-off between the energy wasted in collisions and the energy expended by collision avoidance handshake mechanisms. Towards this objective, the study goes through two phases. First, we explore the space of MAC modes subject to the constraint that different access schemes can inter-operate. Accordingly, we limit our attention to modes within the non-slotted random access paradigm. Second, we analyze, with the aid of detailed network simulations, the energy performance trade-offs of four variations of the CSMA/CA access scheme. Finally, we shed some light on the problem of dynamically switching between different modes depending on the network loading conditions and application QoS requirements. initial results reveal interesting observations related to the energy/delivery contribution of channel reservation and single-hop acknowledgment packets under a wide variety of temporal network loads.

Computational Grid technology has been noticed as an issue to solve large-scale bioinformatics-related problems and improves data accuracy and processing speed on multiple computation platforms with distributed bioDATA sets. This paper focuses on a GPCR data mining processing which is an important bioinformatics application. This paper proposes a Grid-based 3-tier ART1 classifier which operates an ART1 clustering data mining using grid computational resources with distributed GPCR data sets. This Grid-based 3-tier ART1 classifier is able to process a large-scale bioinformatics application in guaranteeing high bioDATA accuracy with reasonable processing resources. This paper evaluates performance of the Grid-based ART1 classifier in comparing to the ART1-based classifier and the ART1 optimum classifier. The data mining processing time of the Grid-based ART1 classifier is 18% data mining processing time of the ART1 optimum classifier and is the 12% data mining processing time of the ART1-based classifier. And we evaluate performance of the Grid-based 3-tier ART1 classifier in comparing to the Grid-based ART1 classifier. As data sets become larger, data mining processing time of the Grid-based 3-tier ART1 classifier more decrease than that of the Grid-based ART1 classifier. Computational Grid in bioinformatics applications gives a great promise of high performance processing with large-scale and geographically distributed bioDATA sets.

There has been considerable interest recently in the development of fiber optic sensors based on white light interferometry. The use of such a technique for distributed strain or temperature sensing in advanced composite or other structural materials has been discussed in several recent articles. Fiber optic Michelson sensor arrays are of particular interest for such applications because a number of reflective-type sensors networked either in a serial or a parallel topology may be interrogated by use of a common path-length variable reference, thus keeping the system cost down. Several schemes have been reported for multiplexing this type of sensors. These include coherence turning, time-division, Spatial division, duplicate fiber optic switch and 1 x N star coupler multiplexing technique. In this paper, we propose and demonstrate a white light twin-sensor-array scheme that measures the absolute optical path lengths between each fiber segment and reflective surfaces. The sensing principle is shown in Figure 1. The broadband LED source is directly coupled into the fiber optic Michelson interferometer by passing thorough a 3 dB coupler and launched into the twin-sensor-array. The twin-sensor-array consist of 2 x N fiber segments (N twin-sensors) connected in series with partial reflectors in-between the adjacent fiber segments, configuring a Michelson interferometer based multiplexed fiber optic sensor array. The reflected signals of each sensor pair retime and travel in the same path towards to the PIN detector end. One arm of the fiber optic Michelson interferometer as optical path adjusting part has been used to demodulate the twin-sensor-arrays. So that each individual sensor pair is corresponding to a unique interference peak due to the optical path length is different each other. For a sensor pair, if one of the twin sensors is used as a strain sensor, while the other sensor can be used as a temperature compensated sensor. Therefore, the proposed sensing scheme

Ubiquitous power includes one important factor that is the coordination among small instances of individualized smart programs. With the coordination, intelligent strategies can be established to realize computing topology and to serve different purposes of computing goals. With the development of cellular phones and internet, these individualized programs exist in the digital world where a new ecosystem can be formed. These smart entities create groups and consume natural resources in the digital world. Competition and collaboration thus exists among different groups of autonomous entities. We propose a model, based on a concept called food web in ecosystem. Food web exists in natural words for minions of years and serves as a balancing algorithm among different types of species. We define the food web model for autonomous entities and propose algorithms for formation and communication. As a consequence, the proposed model can be used to consider the development of intelligent strategies and the underlying communication topology such that ubiquitous intelligences can be evolved on the digital food web.
