In this paper we present a novel platform for underwater sensor networks to be used for long-term monitoring of coral reefs and fisheries. The sensor network consists of static and mobile underwater sensor nodes. The nodes communicate point-to-point using a novel high-speed optical communication system integrated into the TinyOS stack, and they broadcast using an acoustic protocol integrated in the TinyOS stack. The nodes have a variety of sensing capabilities, including cameras, water temperature, and pressure. The mobile nodes can locate and hover above the static nodes for data muling, and they can perform network maintenance functions such as deployment, relocation, and recovery. In this paper we describe the hardware and software architecture of this underwater sensor network. We then describe the optical and acoustic networking protocols and present experimental networking and data collected in a pool, in rivers, and in the ocean. Finally, we describe our experiments with mobility for data muling in this network. sensor networks are being deployed at massive scales, containing a range of platforms. Programming paradigms for sensor networks should meet the attendant challenges of scale and heterogeneity. Researchers have considered virtual machines as a means to address these challenges. However, in order to satisfy the resource limitations of sensor nodes, they export only a minimal set of services to the application programmer. This makes applications of even moderate complexity difficult to implement. We presentVM* -a framework for building resource-efficient virtual machines that scale and export comprehensive service suites on a per-application basis. We advocate the use of fine-grained software synthesis to build resource-efficient system software, and facilitate both application changes and system software upgrades at runtime through an efficient incremental update scheme. We have used our framework to build virtual machines on the Mica platform and describe how virtual machines are effective in meeting the difficult demands of heterogeneity and reprogrammability. The integration of video technology and sensor networks constitutes the fundamental infrastructure for new generations of multimedia surveillance systems, where many different media streams (audio, video, images, textual data, sensor signals) will concur to provide an automatic analysis of the controlled environment and a real-time interpretation of the scene. New solutions can be devised to enlarge the view of traditional surveillance systems by means of distributed architectures with fixed and active cameras, to enhance their view with other sensed data, to explore multi-resolution views with zooming and omnidirectional cameras. Applications regard surveillance of wide indoor and outdoor area and particularly people surveillance: in this case, multimedia surveillance systems can be enriched with biometric technology;the best views of detected persons and their extracted visual features (e.g. faces, voices, trajectories) can be exploited for people identification. VSSN05 is the third edition of the workshop, co-located at ACM Multimedia conference, that embraces research reports on video surveillance and, since the edition of 2004, sensor networks. This paper gives a short overview of the hot topics in multimedia surveillance systems and introduces some research activities currently engaged in the world and presented at VSSN05. © 2005 ACM.

In this work, we consider the sensor localization problem from a novel perspective by treating it as a functional dual of target tracking. In traditional tracking problems, static location-aware sensors track and predict the position/speed of a moving target. As a dual, we utilize a moving location-assistant (LA) (with global positioning system (GPS) or pre-defined moving path) to help location-unaware sensors to accurately discover their positions. We call our proposed system Landscape. In Landscape, an LA (an aircraft, for example) periodically broadcasts its current location while it moves around or through a sensor field. Each sensor collects the location beacons, measures the distance between itself and the LA based on received signal strength (RSS), and individually calculates their locations via an Unscented Kalman Filter (UKF) based algorithm. Our contributions are at least twofold. (1) Landscape is a distributed scheme, it does not rely on measured distances among neighbors (as used by most current proposals), which makes it robust to topology and density;Landscape involves zero sensor-to-sensor communication overhead, and is highly scalable to network size. (2) By introducing UKF in sensor localization problem, we reap multiple benefits: our UKF-based algorithm nicely exploits the constraints increasingly added by the beacons;it elegantly solves the nonlinear problem with low computation cost and complexity;and most importantly, it efficiently reduces the effects of measurement errors, making Landscape robust to ranging errors. Extensive simulations and evaluations against the state-of-the-art systems show that Landscape is a high-performance sensor positioning scheme for outdoor sensor networks.

In order to cope with today's market uncertainties, manufacturing is required to rapidly adapt and react to changes and unpredictable scenarios. These are currently among the main research and development topics in order to reveal new approaches and methodologies to achieve these goals. The Industrial Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) created the IEC 61499 (function block) standard. This standard proposes an open architecture for distributed Industrial-Process Measurement and Control systems (IPMCS). The IEC 61499 defines the basic concepts and methodology for the design of modular reusable distributable systems, and paves the way for the new reconfigurable and flexible manufacturing. This paper presents the development of a software tool (IEC 61499 Application Generator) that enables the deployment of IEC 61499 applications to scan-based embedded controllers. However, the IEC 61499 standard foundations rely on an event-based model. The paper describes an approach to implement an event-based architecture on a scan-based industrial controller. © 2005 ieee.

The problem of localization of wireless sensor nodes has long been regarded as very difficult to solve, when considering the realities of real world environments. In this paper, we formally describe, design, implement and evaluate a novel localization system, called Spotlight. Our system uses the spatio-temporal properties of well controlled events in the network (e.g., light), to obtain the locations of sensor nodes. We demonstrate that a high accuracy in localization can be achieved without the aid of expensive hardware on the sensor nodes, as required by other localization systems. We evaluate the performance of our system in deployments of Mica2 and XSM motes. Through performance evaluations of a real system deployed outdoors, we obtain a 20cm localization error. A sensor network, with any number of nodes, deployed in a 2500m2 area, can be localized in under 10 minutes, using a device that costs less than $1000. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of a sub-meter localization error, obtained in an outdoor environment, without equipping the wireless sensor nodes with specialized ranging hardware. An Internet-based distributed manufacturing system usually consists of a network/grid of autonomous centers that collaborate together. Each center may receive world-wide customer orders and collaborates with other friendly manufacturers, sub-contractors, agents, and suppliers to maximize the sales and quality of the goods. The centers together strike a consistent balance in terms of manufacturing speed, quality, material costs, and workload. The queue maintained by the front-end server/coordinator in each center usually contains requests from different internal and external sources. The merged traffic from these sources can inundate the queue buffer and cause overflow easily in high loading situations. As a result this leads to request retransmissions, unreliable collaborations, and unhappy customers. One way to eliminate buffer overflow in non-persistent (transient) situations is to tune the buffer size on the fly to ensure that it always cover the queue length. The Recurrent NNC (neural network controller) or R-NNC proposed in this paper can achieve efficacious dynamic buffer size tuning at the user level for autonomous centers in an Internet-based distributed manufacturing system. © 2005 ieee.

This paper presents a new integrated information retrieval support system (IIRSS) which can help Web search engines retrieve cross-lingual information from heterogeneous resources stored in multi-databases in Intranet. The IIRSS, with a three-layer architecture, can cooperate with other application servers running in Intranet. By using intelligent agents to collect information and to create indexes on-the-fly, using an access control strategy to confine a user to browsing those accessible documents for him/her through a single portal, and using a new cross-lingual translation tool to help the search engine retrieve documents, the new system provides controllable information access with different authorizations, personalized services, and real-time information retrieval.

There are few published examples of the proof of correctness of a cache-coherence protocol expressed in an HDL. A designer generally shows the correctness of a protocol where many implementation details have been abstracted away. Abstract protocols are often expressed as a table of rules or state transition diagrams with an (implicit) model of atomic actions. There is enough of a semantic gap between these high-level abstract descriptions and HDLs that the task of showing the correctness of an implementation of a verified abstract protocol is as daunting as proving the abstract protocol's correctness in the first place. The main contribution of this paper is to show that this problem can be largely avoided by expressing the verified abstract protocol in Bluespec System Verilog (BSV), which is based on guarded atomic actions and is synthesizable into efficient hardware. Consequently, once a protocol has been verified at the rules-level, little verification effort is needed to verify the implementation. We illustrate our approach by synthesizing a non-blocking MSI cache-coherence protocol for distributed Memory systems and discuss the performance of the resulting implementation.

Typical acoustic 3-D imaging systems use 1-D transducer array and lenses with fixed focal distance, so the spatial resolution deteriorates in front and behind the focus point. Furthermore, the time resolution is much lower than that of 2-D imaging system. For acoustic real-time 3-D diagnostic imaging systems, we propose a system based on a hybrid array-reflector configuration which realizes high time and spatial resolutions with modest computional load. All elements on a small dense array excite with proper time delays in order to transmit a broad beam similar to that of a single transmitter element. The reflected echo is first focused by a concave reflector, and then received by the same small dense sensor array. Widely distributed images on the array are reconstructed by numerical back projection. With this scheme, images of the whole measuring area can be reconstructed from a single transmit and receive event, which enables a real-time 3-D imaging. The maximum theoretical flame rate is 5000 flames/s, and the number of elements can be reduced to about 1/7 of the dense 2-D array of the synthetic aperture system having the same spatial resolution. This method has higher signal-to-noise ratio than defocused multi-element synthetic aperture methods, overcoming conventional phased array performance.
