New fast moving markets demand flexible, adaptable production facilities to allow manufacturing companies a fast reaction on consumer needs. Reconfigurable manufacturing systems provide a solution for these problems. Currently used software architectures have not been designed for providing an infrastructure for such manufacturing systems. With the new standard IEC 61499 the international Electrotechnical Commission provides an architecture for flexible distributed control systems. But it leaves open points regarding real-time execution and reconfiguration in realtime. This work focuses on real-time execution of IEC 61499 applications. It describes all execution elements of IEC 61499 within a device. Different implementation and scheduling approaches are compared and discussed. A first real-time scheduling approach for IEC 61499 control applications allows executing applications with periodic real-time constraints in parallel to unconstrained applications. It serves as a base for an enhanced full featured IEC 61499 real-time execution support.

Globalization has led to increase in outsourcing of production activities, which in turn creates a new organization paradigm so called networked or virtual enterprises. This trend has created challenging opportunities in terms of supply chain management. Under such complex manufacturing network, independent companies are working in a distributed or decentralized manner. Each of which probably has no right to access sensitive information of the others. Coordination of activities is of vital importance to quickly respond to dynamic market condition, especially in Make-to-Order (MTO) supply network, which usually leads to higher average lateness. In this connection, an adaptive MTO coordination strategy (or sometimes called as mechanism) with contract is proposed in this paper for distributed manufacturing supply chains for multiple product types. Results indicate that the proposed adaptive strategy can improve the performance of the supply chain in terms of total operating cost and demand fill rate. The latter is usually regarded as a weakness of traditional static MTO production strategy.

In this paper, we propose a new network topology discovery mechanism among ubiquitous chips, which are rule-based, event-driven input/output (I/O) control devices to compose ubiquitous computing environments. Since they achieve flexibility by describing behavior in a set of rules, we employ a rule-based approach to discover network topology. In ubiquitous computing environments, we use various communication methods and applications at the same time. Therefore, our flexible discovery mechanism works well in ubiquitous computing environments. Moreover, we verified our algorithm by implementing it on a topology discovery simulator and actual prototype devices of ubiquitous chips.

In this paper we outline a sensor network for landslide detection. Network sensors deployed on the surface and underground the hill under observation, use distributed signal processing techniques to self-localize and detect any changes in their relative locations. When such movements occur, changes in location as well as soil parameters are passed to a central location and used as input to a Finite Element Model that predicts whether and when a landslide will occur.

Achieving re-configurability and flexibility of the control software was one of the main factors that stimulated the emergence of the standard IEC 61499. The current paper is concerned with the re-configurability aspect in terms of control process within the scope of this standard as a task scheduling approach is presented as a probable solution. Task scheduling is proposed as a means of describing the process sequences of a sub-system in an effective and reconfigurable way. When orders of the processes need to be changed for a different mode of operation or even in case of total depreciation of the previous processing sequences, the changes can be actuated through task schedules. This allows re-configurability of the sub-system to be achieved during runtime without stalling the controlled operations. The task schedules can also be associated with a maximum time limit for particular task executions and this may help in monitoring the controlled hardware's actions. For the description of the schedules timing and sequence diagram of UML as well as Gantt charts are investigated. The implementation of the proposed approach on a resource-restricted hardware imposes some additional design constraints.

This paper surveys recent research on IC designs for wireless applications. Recent advances in device technologies and system architectures are presented. Recent low power wireless systems, both from academia and from industry, are summarized. Circuit design techniques and challenges for low voltage and low power applications are discussed. RF performance and power trade-offs are addressed. Examples of common RF building blocks, e.g. LNA's and VCO's, designed for sub-1 V power supplies are presented.

Scalability is a stringent requirement to every evolving information system. One of the key solutions to the scalability is caching. Most distributed object caching systems to date offer only coarse-grained mechanism in which an entire servant object graph is cached at once. Doing this minimizes cache miss frequency but imposes the long latency of cache miss resolution especially when the servant object graph is large or when the network load is high. Hence, it is preferable to compromise between this pair of performance metrics. Using fine-grained caching approach in which only necessary parts of the servant object graph are cached can satisfy both metrics at the same time. In this paper, we propose a framework that supports the incremental and automatic finegrained caching of Java objects at run time in transparent manner to client. This goal is efficiently achieved by means of proxy and hook mechanisms. Experimental results demonstrate that our framework incurs the latency of cache miss resolution by only one third of a remote invocation latency of Java RMI. Furthermore, the proposed framework can deliver cache hit performance closely to that of Java local invocation's while outperforming Java RMI 1400 times.

In this paper, we describe the mechanical design, system integration and dynamic walking of the humanoid, KHR-2 (KAIST Humanoid Robot– 2). KHR-2 has 41 DOFs in total, that allows it to imitate various human-like motions. To control all joint axes effectively, the distributed control architecture is used, which reduces computation burden on the main controller, and allows convenient system. A servo motor controller was used as the sub-controller, whereas a 3-axis force/torque sensor and an inertia sensor were used in the sensory system. The main controller attached on the back of KHR-2 communicates with the sub-controllers in real-time through CAN (Controller Area Network) protocol. Windows XP was used as the operation system, whereas RTX HAL extension commercial software was used to realize the real-time control capability in Windows environment. We define the walking pattern and describe several online controllers in each stage. Some of the experimental results of KHR-2 are also presented.

Current research on mechatronic engineering focuses mainly on engineering methodologies. This paper presents a new architecture based on the reference model of IEC 61499. This architecture includes both, the engineering view of a device represented by its services and their representation within the control application as function blocks that are used within the whole distributed automation system. The services of a mechatronic component are its special functionalities, for instance motion in the case of a linear servo drive. The direct relation between services and IEC 61499 function blocks enables simple and intuitive control engineering for the user. In this paper the usage of this novel integrated approach is demonstrated by the example of a linear axis. Each movement of the axis corresponds to a certain function block. The control application itself is modeled by associating the motion sequence with the services encapsulated in function blocks. The embedded control platform of the mechatronic component executes the application control logic and each device within the network is able to access the services of a certain mechatronic component. Therefore device vendors are able to enhance their products by integrating their special intellectual property. The users can access the functionality of the mechatronic components without regard to its implementation details.

Missing data creates various problems in analysing and processing data in databases. In this paper we introduce a new method aimed at approximating missing data in a database using a combination of genetic algorithms and neural networks. The proposed method uses genetic algorithm to minimise an error function derived from an auto-associative neural network. Multi-layer perceptron (MLP) and radial basis function (RBF) networks are employed to train the neural networks. Our focus also lies on the investigation of using the proposed method in accurately predicting missing data as the number of missing cases within a single record increases. It is observed that there is no significant reduction in accuracy of results as the number of missing cases in a single record increases. It is also found that results obtained using RBF are superior to MLP.
