On developing the personal robot system presently, the internal architecture is every module those occupy separated functions are connected through heterogeneous network system. This module-based architecture supports specialization and division of labor at not only designing but also implementation, as an effect of this architecture, it can reduce developing times and costs for modules. Furthermore, because every module is connected among other modules through network systems, we can get easy integrations and synergy effect to apply advanced mutual functions by coworking some modules. In this architecture, one of the most important technologies is the network middleware that takes charge communications among each modules connected through heterogeneous networks systems. The network middleware acts as the human nerve system inside of personal robot system;it relays, transmits, and translates information appropriately between modules that are similar to human organizations. The network middleware supports various hardware platform, heterogeneous network systems (Ethernet, Wireless LAN, USB, ieee 1394, CAN, CDMA-SMS, RS-232C). This paper discussed some mechanisms about our network middleware to intercommunication and routing among modules, methods for real-time data communication and fault-tolerant network service. There have designed and implemented a layered network middleware scheme, distributed routing management, network monitoring/notification technology on heterogeneous networks for these goals. The main theme is how to make routing information in our network middleware. Additionally, with this routing information table, we appended some features. Now we are designing, making a new version network middleware (we call 'OO M/W') that can support object-oriented operation, also are updating program sources itself for object-oriented architecture. A fiber-optic Fabry-Perot interferometric medical pressure sensor of 125 /spl mu/m in diameter and results of animal experiments are presented. A Fabry-Perot cavity is formed at an optical fiber end using MEMS (Micro Electro Mechanical systems) technology. Deformation of the diaphragm of the sensor induced by pressure varies the Fabry-Perot cavity length. White light interferometry is used for detecting the change of cavity length to avoid noise caused by bending of the optical fiber and fluctuation of the light source. The spectrum of the modulated reflection light from the sensor interferometer is measured by high-speed spectrometer controlled by a micro-controller with parallel signal processing. The detection system tracks peak wavelengths of the modulated light and determines the sensor cavity length, which corresponds the applied pressure. Pressure changes have been monitored by using the developed detection system. The total rate of sampling at the spectrometer, data transfer from the spectrometer to the micro-controller, calculation and data output is 800 Hz. Animal experiments using a rat have been carried out and dynamic blood pressure changes in a carotid artery have been successfully monitored.

The use of low-cost imagers in sensor network applications is imminent. Small low-power imagers have many potential applications in visual confirmation of events, target recognition, security and entertainment. To make the autonomous operation of imager sensors in such applications possible, smart imager sensors should be able to calibrate their views with respect to other imagers in the network and should become aware of the locations of other non-imager sensors. Such calibration will allow cameras with multiple vantage points and sensors distributed in physical space to jointly undertake collaborative tasks.

This demonstration will show two distributed sensory systems. One is an environmental monitoring system that can be used outdoor weather and habitat studies or for controlled environment monitoring (Figure 1). This system is composed of two types of wireless sensor. One is a simple relative humidity and temperature sensor and the other has total solar radiation, photosynthetic radiation, and barometric pressure (in addition to relative humidity and temperature).The second system is a platform for distributed motion detection that can be used for perimeter or area activity monitoring or for building occupancy analysis (Figure 2). The system is composed of a node which has multiple sensors including four passive infrared, two-axis magnetic field, and acoustic *** data from both systems will be displayed on a user interface called MOTE-VIEW. This is a PC application which is used to view incoming data, chart sensor information over time, and visualize the network topology and sensor data on a map of the *** demo will also provide information on the software and hardware building blocks for sensory systems. The software building blocks include the embedded firmware in the sensor nodes ("XMesh-enabled applications"), the data aggregation and dissemination layer ("XServe"), and finally the client layer ("MOTE-VIEW"). The hardware building blocks include the wireless platform modules ("Motes") and sensor suites and interfaces. These building blocks are packaged as development platform and will be on display.

Over the past years a number of methods have been developed to monitor the cardiac output. Some of these techniques are rather inaccurate, others are expensive or labour-intensive for the clinical staff in the Intensive Care (IC). In order to avoid the problems with existing systems, three approaches, which make use of multisensors, are being investigated. A series of prototype sensors (for measuring blood-flow velocity, blood pressure and electrodes for blood impedance measurements) have been fabricated and are being tested. Ultrasound transducers are considered for intravascular diameter detection of the blood vessels of interest.

This paper presents a novel microdevice for the dielectrophoretic manipulation of particles and cells for sample preparation and analysis. A two level isotropic etch of a glass substrate was used to create insulating ridges in micron sized channels. These ridges created a non-uniform field when a direct current field was applied across the channel and the dielectrophoretic force that resulted from the ridge was used to manipulate particles. We show the continuous concentration and separation of Bacillus subtilis from a two component sample mixture. When the applied voltage is at or above 30V/mm the flow of Bacillus subtilis was restricted to the central channel as a result of negative DEP away from the field concentration produced by the insulating ridges. Under the same applied electric fields the 200-nm polystyrene particles DEP away from the insulating ridges was negligible for the 200-nm particles, which flowed uninhibited down the three exit channels.

We propose a demonstration of extremely scalable modular robotics algorithms developed as part of the Claytronics Project (http://***/~claytronics/), as well as a demonstration of proof-of-concept prototypes. Our effort envisions multi-million-module robot ensembles able to morph into three-dimensional scenes, eventually with sufficient fidelity so as to convince a human observer the scenes are real. Although this work is potentially revolutionary in the sense that it holds out the possibility of radically altering the relationship between computation, humans, and the physical world, many of the research questions involved are similar in flavor to more mainstream systems research, albeit larger in scale. For instance, as in sensor networks, each robot will incorporate sensing, computation, and communications components. However, unlike most sensor networks each robot will also include mechanisms for actuation and motion. Many of the key challenges in this project involve coordination and communication of sensing and actuation across such large ensembles of independent units.

Wireless sensor Networks are edging closer to widespread feasibility with recent research showing promising results in developing and adapting new mechanisms to suit their environment. Secure communication between these distributed wireless devices is a desired characteristic, especially in scenarios where these sensors will be used for military and other mission-critical operations. This paper highlights some of the research challenges for extending secure communications over these resource-limited devices and points out why current protocols do not scale well in this unique application realm. A new key setup protocol (SEKEN) is proposed that neatly fits into the requirements of these device types. The performance of SEKEN is then analyzed against some other possible key setup mechanisms. Our initial results confirm that it performs better under most of the conditions anticipaied for general wireless sensor networks.

We describe a technique called lookaside caching that combines the strengths of distributed file systems and portable storage devices, while negating their weaknesses. In spite of its simplicity, this technique proves to be powerful and versatile. By unifying distributed storage and portable storage into a single abstraction, lookaside caching allows users to treat devices they carry as merely performance and availability assists for distant file servers. Careless use of portable storage has no catastrophic consequences. Experimental results show that significant performance improvements are possible even in the presence of stale data on the portable device.

Augmented Reality (AR) provides a natural interface to the "calm" pervasive technology anticipated in large-scale Ubiquitous computing environments. However the range of classic AR applications has been limited by the scope, range and cost of sensors used for tracking. Hybrid tracking approaches can go some way to extending this range. We propose an approach, called Ubiquitous Tracking, in which data from widespread and diverse heterogeneous tracking sensors is automatically and dynamically fused, and then transparently provided to applications. A formal model represents spatial relationships between objects as a graph attributed with quality-of-service parameters. This paper presents a software implementation, in which a dynamic data flow network of distributed software components is thereby constructed in response to queries and optimisation criteria specified by applications. This implementation is demonstrated using a small laboratory example, and larger setups modelled in a simulation environment.
