This paper presents a method for grouping 3D points into cuboids. The 3D points are extracted using multiple stereovision sensors, and the sensor fusion module performs the fusion of the data sets and the grouping of the points in a single algorithm. The fusion/grouping algorithm is scalable, being able to work using any number of sensors, including a single one. The grouping method relies on a method of transforming the 3D space so that the density of the points is kept constant, and all the points belonging to a single object are adjacent, making the grouping of points into cuboids a simple labeling problem.

Sensing the state of the environment is an important source for context-aware applications. Several approaches exist to provide sensor information to mobile application nodes. As the extreme cases we have pure infrastructures and pure ad hoc networks. In order to allow sensor platforms to serve both of these approaches, we have designed a universal sensor platform and integrated it into an infrastructure-based approach as well as into ad hoc networks. In this paper we discuss the requirements on such a platform, the design, and the experiences.

Pervasive computing environments are characterized by an additional heterogeneity compared to existing computing infrastructures. Devices ranging from small embedded systems to full-fledged computers are connected via spontaneously formed networks. In this paper we analyze requirements of applications and system software to cope with the dynamically changing execution environment. Based on our micro-broker-based middleware BASE a component framework for pervasive computing supporting application adaptation is proposed.

Networking forms an essential part of distributed systems and reliable point-to-point communication is one of the main utilization of distributed networking systems. In this paper, we discuss new techniques for improving networking in distributed systems under a sequence of operations, such as inserting and deleting a link between two nodes. As a result, by simply alternating the insertion and deletion of a link, we can generate a sequence of operations that at each step changes the number of components. It is shown how to rest at any time whether two nodes belong to the same sub-network, and how to insert and delete a link in O(m(2/3)) time in the worst case, where m is the current number of links in the network.

Over the past 10 years, Thales Naval Nederland (TNN) has successfully applied a pure data-centric architecture called SPLICE in its naval Combat Management systems This fielded architecture provides the essential non-functional properties as demanded in these mission-critical environments such as (real-time) performance, scalability, fault-tolerance and evolve-ability. Thales recently contributed this knowledge and experience in a joint submission regarding the OMG's Data Distribution Service (DDS) for Real-time systems. The SPLICE architecture is characterized by autonomous applications with minimal dependencies where function and interaction are clearly separated and SPLICE-agents act as real-time information brokers. SPLICE thus offers a normalized environment that is designed once for all applications and which delivers 'the right information at the right place at the right time'.

Data distribution in embedded real-time sensor networks requires new protocols and programming environments that achieve time-sensitive message delivery and provide useful abstractions to the application programmer Attainment of these goals requires changes to multiple layers of the communication protocol stack. In this paper we review a protocol suite developed by the authors for data communication in embedded sensor networks. It takes into account time constraints and exports attribute-based connections that are tightly integrated with properties of the monitored environment. A programming language is described that allows external physical objects to be represented as first class abstractions in the computing system. The language facilitates writing monitoring applications. The system was implemented on a prototypical sensor network based on MICA motes.

Exploiting autonomic adaptation in defending a distributed application is a relatively new research area. We describe how the QuO adaptive middleware was used to implement auto-adaptive defenses ranging from simple rapid-response sensor-actuator tactics to more sophisticated containment and outrun strategies. In addition, we report on two experiments where live red team attacks were used to evaluate our auto-adaptive defense technology.

Connectivity based node clustering has wide ranging applications in decentralized Peer-to-Peer (P2P) networks such as P2P file sharing systems, mobile ad-hoc networks, P2P sensor networks and so forth. This paper describes a Connectivity-based distributed Node Clustering scheme (CDC). This scheme presents a scalable and an efficient solution for discovering connectivity based clusters in peer networks. In contrast to centralized graph clustering algorithms, the CDC scheme is completely decentralized and it only assumes the knowledge of neighbor nodes, instead of requiring a global knowledge of the network (graph) to be available. An important feature of the CDC scheme is its ability to cluster the entire network automatically or to discover clusters around a given set of nodes. We provide experimental evaluations of the CDC scheme, addressing its effectiveness in discovering good quality clusters. Our experiments show that utilizing message-based connectivity structure can considerably reduce the messaging cost, and provide better utilization of resources, which in turn improves the quality of service of the applications executing over decentralized peer-to-peer networks.

We present an architectural framework, Garnet, which provides a data stream centric abstraction to encourage the manipulation and exploitation of data generated in sensor networks. By providing middleware services to allow mutually-unaware applications to manipulate sensor behaviour a scalable, extensible platform is provided. We focus on sensor networks with transmit and receive capabilities as this combination poses greater challenges for managing and distributing sensed data. Our approach allows simple and sophisticated sensors to coexist, and allows data consumers to be mutually unaware of each other This also promotes the use of middleware services to mediate among consumers with potentially conflicting demands for shared data. Garnet has been implemented in Java, and we report on our progress to date and outline some likely scenarios where the use of our distributed architecture and accompanying middleware support enhances the task of sharing data in sensor network environments.
