Peer-To-Peer (P2P) networks are self-organizing, distributedsystems, with no centralized authority or infrastructure. Because of the voluntary participation, the availability of resources in a P2P system can be highly variable and unpredictable. In this paper, we use ideas from Game Theory to study the interaction of strategic and rational peers, and propose a differential service-based incentive scheme to improve the system's performance.
Energy is one of the most critical constraints for sensor network applications. In this paper, we exploit the localized prediction paradigm for power-efficient object tracking sensor network. Localized prediction cons...

The Bluetooth wireless technology is an emerging technology originally designed as a short-range connectivity solution for personal, portable, and handheld electronic devices. This paper briefly presents the functionality and the architecture of an indoor positioning service based on this technology. Most of the design choices for the service have been strongly influenced by Bluetooth features. The effectiveness of the indoor positioning service is critically analyzed. Experimental and simulation results used for defining the policy of mobile device discovery are shown.
Any learning environment can be parsed into five facets. These five facets are information banks, symbol pads, construction kits, 39;phenomenaria39; and task managers. 39;Phenomenaria39; are areas for the spec...

Peer-to-Peer (p2p) networks are the latest addition to the already large distributedsystems family. With a strong emphasis on self-organization, decentralization and autonomy of the participating nodes, p2p-networks tend to be more scalable, robust and adaptive than other forms of distributedsystems. The much-publicized success of p2p-networks for file-sharing and cycle-sharing have resulted in an increased awareness and interest into the p2p protocols and applications. However, p2p-networks are difficult to study due to their size and the complex interdependencies between users, application, protocol and network. This paper presents a 3-level simulator designed to study complex p2p networks.

sensor networks, that consist of potentially several thousands of nodes each with sensing (heat, sound, light, magnetism, etc.) and wireless communication capabilities, provide great opportunities for monitoring spatial information about a region of interest. Although spatial query execution has been studied extensively in the context of database systems (e.g., indexing technologies), these solutions are not directly applicable in the context of sensor networks due to the decentralized nature of the sensor networks and the limited computational power and energy scarcity of individual sensor nodes. In this paper, we present a peer-to-peer indexing structure, namely peer-tree, in order to address the problem of energy- and time-efficient execution of spatial queries (such as nearest-neighbor queries) in sensor networks. Loosely speaking, our peer-tree structure can be interpreted as a peer-to-peer version of the centralized R-tree index structure. Using the peer-tree as a building block, we present a peer-to-peer query processing model where a query can be posed in any node of the network without the need of a central server. For achieving minimal energy consumption and minimal response time, our query processing model ensures that only the relevant nodes for the correct execution of a query are involved in the query execution.

People with disabilities face major problems in their daily lives in communicating with other people. Sign Languages (SLs) are the basic means of communication between hearing-impaired people and also form their natural way of speaking. systems that could act as interpreters between deaf people and people that do not speak SL, would facilitate the formers' life. Such systems would have to cope with bidirectional translation of sign language sentences and spoken language sentences. Various research works have been presented recently, concerning mostly SL recognition, rather than spoken language interpretation. The system we present in this paper, aims at Greek Sign Language (GSL) recognition, too, through the use of Hidden Markov Models (HMMs). The recognition rates we achieved for GSL sentences, formed out of a 33-sign vocabulary, exceed 86% and are quite promising.
One of the principal characteristics of large scale wireless sensor networks is their distributed, multi-hop nature. Due to this characteristic, applications such as query propagation rely regularly on network-wide fl...
