Most existing approaches for determining serious pathological conditions involve analysis of stained images of human tissue. In this paper we describe a multi-agent distributed control system model for image processing of unstained human (mammalian) cell images. The control system model develops a symbiotic relationship between soft computing agents like neural networks and water immersion and morphological agents for segmentation and classification of cells in unstained Chinese hamster ovarian image samples.

The different ways in which some computer network concepts are understood by students who take an internationally distributed project-based course have been identified in an empirical, qualitative, phenomena graphic research project. The students, who work in teams of six, three in each of the participating countries, collaborate over the Internet to produce a software system which controls a modified version of a toy. Their learning of a computer networking protocols as well as the possibilities to generalize and to deploy the results in teaching situations are presented. The results are useful when seen in the light of the students' learning environment, since relations between the learning outcome and the learning environment can be discerned.

Plug-and-play sensor self-calibrating technology is presented in this paper. The solution involves the evolution and tuning of a neural network (NN), through a genetic algorithm (GA). The former is utilized to interface to a sensor, on-board a robotic sensor agent. Multiple NN interfaces can be utilized for multiple sensors, hence providing for a parallel and scalable system. The system introduces the "sense remotely, actuate immediately" concept, along with an analysis of a completely pervasive and sentient environment, in which sensors provide the user with real-time and wireless sensory information, while actuators provision for the user's response to the filtered data, streaming from the plethora of intelligent sensors.

The move towards renewable energy and the deregulation of the market changes the infrastructure for power transport and distribution from centralised to distributed. This requires a new algorithm for control of the electrical power infrastructure. This paper describes a possible new algorithm: a distributed, emergent algorithm that provides additional dependability and resilience to failures. The trade-offs of this algorithm, faults that can be tolerated and the possibility for priorities are also discussed.

People with disabilities face major problems in their daily lives in communicating with other people. Sign languages (SLs) are the basic means of communication between hearing-impaired people and also form their natural way of speaking. systems that could act as interpreters between deaf people and people that do not speak SL, would facilitate the formers' life. Such systems would have to cope with bidirectional translation of sign language sentences and spoken language sentences. Various research works have been presented recently, concerning mostly SL recognition, rather than spoken language interpretation. The system we present, aims at Greek sign language (GSL) recognition, too, through the use of hidden Markov models (HMMs). The recognition rates we achieved for GSL sentences, formed out of a 33-sign vocabulary, exceed 86% and are quite promising.

We present an approach of enriching grown structures of teaching in German schools with innovative technology and collaborative software tools. Two applications for collaborative modelling and mind mapping will be introduced. Together with a community of secondary school teachers we have elaborated classroom experiments which give an added value but without redefining well suited pedagogic methods or changing the learning matters. We will present different experiences made by teachers and researchers in the domains of mathematics, biology and German language in secondary schools. We have found out that not only are teachers in science interested in computerised learning scenarios but there are several premises for a successful transfer of technology into schools.

We present the distributed information system for support of research and educational process with remote access to informational and technical resources within the intranet/Internet networks. The authors created the software and hardware of remote access and control described herein. The system is characterized by the network integration of computer-based research equipment for the natural sciences. It provides multiple access to such resources in the networks functioning on the basis of protocol stack TCP/IP. The access to physical equipment is realized through the standard interface servers (CAMAC, GPIB), the access server of the microcontrollers i80C196KC, and the communication server, which integrates the equipment servers into uniform information system. The system is used for making research task solutions in optical spectrography, as well as for supporting educational process at the Department of Physics of Petrozavodsk State University.

In mobile-agent-based distributed sensor networks (MADSNs), instead of moving data from an individual sensor node to a processing center as a typical scenario in the client/server-based computing, mobile agents on that carry the executable code are dispatched from the processing center to the sensor nodes and process data locally. Because of the complicated behavior of the mobile agents, there has not been much work done in modeling and simulation. In this paper, a Generalized Stochastic Petri Net (GSPN) is used to model the mobile agents in DSNs. GSPN is a very popular modeling tool for systems that feature concurrency, synchronization and randomness. One of the most challenging problems in GSPN modeling is to design a mechanism for breaking the transition conflicts. This paper presents a random transition selector based on joint entropy and a so-called "rolling rocks random (R3) selector" to break conflicts among immediate transitions. The GSPN model based on this transition selector is synthesized on a Xilinx Virtex 1000E Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) using reconfigurable components. Simulation results show that the proposed transition selector performs better than the commonly used random selector.

The design and realization of a leading-to-FPGA implementation Mandani's fuzzy inference system with two inputs, 16 rules and single output is introduced here. System architecture, that is sequential in nature, was specified through a software tool which automatically generates the architecture code according to user settings. A novel type defuzzyfication stage was implemented in order to use a parallel distributed arithmetic scheme.

Any learning environment can be parsed into five facets. These five facets are information banks, symbol pads, construction kits, 'phenomenaria' and task managers. 'Phenomenaria' are areas for the specific purpose of presenting phenomena and making them accessible to scrutiny and manipulation. Taken together these five facets offer a perspective on the general structure and style of the learning environment. A collection of processes, which are distinct, spatially separated, and which communicate by exchanging messages constitutes a distributed system. A distributed algorithm defines the steps to be taken by each process within that system, including the transfer of messages. It must be able to deal with the failure of one or more of the processes involved in its computation and also the failure of one or more message transmissions. A major problem in teaching the latter material is the ability to capture the dynamic movement of data. Typically, when demonstrating data movement on a white board, part of the existing data configuration must be erased in order to show the new configuration. A phenomenarium offers a way forward for both lecturers and students in that it provides mechanisms not only to animate but to simulate dynamic movement in visual form. Moreover, it can be housed within an environment that permits 'anytime anywhere' learning, like the World Wide Web. Simply stated, a phenomenarium permits a student to interact with elements of a given algorithm in their own time. An argument in favor of the use of the latter in the teaching of distributed algorithms is presented.
