In this paper, we devise data allocation algorithms that can utilize the knowledge of user moving patterns for proper allocation of shared data in a mobile computing system. By employing the data allocation algorithms devised, the occurrences of costly remote accesses can be minimized and the performance of a mobile computing system is thus improved. The data allocation algorithms for shared data, which are able to achieve local optimization and global optimization, are developed. Local optimization refers to the optimization that the likelihood of local data access by an individual mobile user is maximized whereas global optimization refers to the optimization that the likelihood of local data access by all mobile users is maximized. By exploring the corresponding features, we devise algorithm SD-local and algorithm SD-global to achieve local optimization and global optimization, respectively. The simulation results show that the knowledge obtained from the user moving patterns is very important in devising effective data allocation algorithms which can lead to prominent performance improvement in a mobile computing system.

In this paper we demonstrate that in an ideal distributed Information Retrieval environment, taking the ability of each collection server to return relevant documents into account when selecting collections can be effective. Based on this assumption, we suggest a new approach to resolve the collection selection problem. In order to predict a collection's ability to return relevant documents, we inspect a limited number n of documents retrieved from each collection and analyze the proximity of search keywords within them. In our experiments, we vary the underlying parameter n of our suggested model to define the most appropriate number of top documents to be inspected. Moreover, we evaluate the retrieval effectiveness of our approach and compare it with both the centralized indexing and the CORI approaches [1], [16]. Preliminary results from these experiments, conducted on WT10g test collection, tend to demonstrate that our suggested method can achieve appreciable retrieval effectiveness.

The paper develops an abstract architectural view of a distributed mobile terminal for use in third generation mobile systems, including UMTS and the Mobile Internet. The actual physical form that a third generation terminal will take is still arguable, however, it is possible to be architecturally prescriptive as to the logical form such a terminal should take. The paper starts by reviewing the current status of mobile terminal development and an analysis of the perception of what comprises a third generation mobile terminal. From this analysis hints as to what elements that comprise the architecture are extrapolated. Building upon these findings, the paper presents, for discussion, a conceptual architecture for a 3G mobile terminal, which will impose no restrictions upon implementation. The general operation of the functions that comprise the architecture will be outlined.

In most modern cellular radio systems efficient interference management aims at acceptable Carrier-to-Interference (CIR) ratios in all active communication links in the system. Power control is an integral technique in the design and operation of such cellular radio systems. It can be used to reduce cochannel interference and hence the near- far effects. Two main approaches have been adopted for power control, which are known as centralized and distributed. Centralised power control requires knowledge of the information of all link gains between base stations and mobiles, which is very difficult to implement for large real-time systems. In this paper, we consider distributed power control algorithms, which are only based on local information at the base station. A new technique based on the method of Projection Onto Convex Sets (POCS) is developed and is used to obtain the minimum protection ratio. Simulation results show that the POCS method achieves much faster convergence and improved outage probability than other conventional methods.

In this paper we address issues related to mobility, personalization and asynchronous operation to support efficient access to the World Wide Web across weakly connected or low bandwidth wireless links. WWW provides a large globally distributedcomputing and information access infrastructure. With the large amount of accessible information came the problem of information overload, making the process of finding content of interest a difficult issue. This is further exacerbated in mobile environments because of the well-known resource constraints. We have developed MobilelQ, a distributed system and service infrastructure that can offer personalized mobile information access in a wireless network environment. MobilelQ addresses challenges unique to a mobile environment such as mobility management and disconnection management, in addition to issues common to all environments: content personalization, bandwidth utilization, download latencies, and user privacy. We will also demonstrate how this architecture may be used to provide location-based services to users of the MobilelQ system.

Efficient distribution of rich multimedia content requires personalisation of media services to client device and bearer link properties. The customisation of multimedia data delivery is imposed by the vast amount of network heterogeneity and diverse user terminal capabilities. This paper discusses varied personalised communication strategies whilst introducing a proposed scheme. In this scenario, media delivery is provided through content adaptation via transcoding at a central media gateway. This is achieved by acquiring terminal capability and link characteristics data from several distributed client-side gateways. Computer simulation results prove the efficiency of the proposed method.
