VISPAR is a research project partially funded by the Commission of European Countries (CEC) at the National Centre for Software Technology in India for investigating the use of parallel computing in global illumination and visualization of 3D environments. A task delegation framework has been evolved based on the notion of distributed agents, which take both the responsibilities of suitably delegating tasks to other agents and of executing tasks delegated to them, based on their core competencies. The paper describes this framework and the distributed multi-agent architecture designed specifically, for obtaining high performance in interactive manipulation and walkthrough computations of very large virtual environments.

Engineering of complex distributed real-time applications is one of the hardest tasks faced by the software profession today. All aspects of the process, from design to implementation, are made more difficult by the interaction of behavioral and platform constraints. Providing tools for this task is likewise not without major challenges. In this paper, we discuss a tool suite at New Jersey Institute of Technology's Real-Time computing Lab which supports the development of complex distributed real-time applications in a suitable high-level language (CRL). The suite's component tools include a compiler, a transformer-optimizer, an allocator-migrator, schedulability analyzers, a debugger-monitor, a kernel and a (simulated) network manager. The overall engineering approach supported by the suite is to provide as simple and natural an integrated development paradigm as possible. The suite tools address complexity due to distribution, scheduling, allocation and other sources in an integrated manner (largely) transparent to the developer. To reflect the needs of propagation of functional and non-functional requirements throughout the development process, a number of robust code transformation and communication mechanisms have been incorporated into the suite. To facilitate practical use of the suite, the developed programs compile-transform to a safe subset of C++ with appropriate libraries and runtime support.

We put forward a distributed model for accessing heterogeneous database systems. Database operations requested by the user are processed in a distributed manner that takes advantage of the inherent parallelism of distributedsystems, minimises network traffic and uses almost any general purpose computer on the network. Processing is not confined to DBMS sites but is provided as a distributed service. The design is modular and provides the mechanisms that may be arranged in a variety of ways providing a range of integration paradigms from loosely coupled integrations to more tightly coupled integrations.

Techniques of customizing and extending operating systems (OSs) have a growing impact on system architectures in the field of distributedcomputing and parallel programming. Even if traditional methods of adaption have been limited to the user-level, modern OSs cannot do without kernel support. Hence concepts and structures of microkernel architectures must be redefined to meet the requirements of today's and future applications. We propose a new customizable low-level OS architecture-the Dycos kernel. We discuss customization demands on microkernels and describe the basic kernel concept. Dycos is an object-based approach providing a toolbox of operations to build user-definable compositions of kernel structures. The Dycos approach has been evaluated on a Solaris 2.5.1 platform.
