The Fidelity Measurement question in distributed Interactive Simulation (DIS) needs to be answered. It's resolution is crucial to defining and resolving the interoperability issue of 'How to compare and contrast simulations of varying fidelities on a quantifiable basis'?' Once such a measure of fidelity is modeled, it would allow high-fidelity simulators to play fairly with low fidelity simulations. The Fidelity Subgroup of the DIS Standards Development Project has developed a Draft Fidelity Description Requirement (FDR) Document, in an hierarchical taxonomy format. This framework provides an object-oriented, modular referent to model. The input and output descriptors are defined verbally, linguistically. Recent research would suggest this linguistic base can easily be transformed into quantifiable measures, indices. This paper presents the development of a real-time system for recognition of textured objects. In contrast to current approaches which mostly rely on specialized multiprocessor architectures for fast processing, we use a distributed network architecture to support parallelism and attain real-time performance. In this paper, a new approach to image matching is proposed as the basis of object localization and positioning, which involves dynamic texture feature extraction and hierarchical image matching. A mask based stochastic method is introduced to extract feature points for matching. Our experimental results demonstrate that the combination of texture feature extraction and interesting point detection provides a better solution to the search of the best matching between two textured images. Furthermore, such an algorithm is implemented on a low cost heterogeneous PVM (Parallel Virtual Machine) network to speed up the processing without specific hardware requirements.

This article presents a complete hybrid object recognition system for three-dimensional objects using the characteristic view (ChV) idea. To apply the ChV representation method in a recognition system investigations are needed concerning the processing of large object data bases. First we present two methods to reduce the number of views in the object data base. Second we developed an accumulator (AC)-based matching strategy combined with a localization process. This strategy bases on a hierarchical indexing structure that uses a Gaussian distributed voting. The off-line part of the matching includes a statistical analysis of the object data base and an interface to process results of a sensor configuration analysis. The calculated results support the construction of an adapted layer model suitable for hierarchical indexing. Further an unsupervised learning module is introduced;that investigates the measurement errors and adapts the system online. Results of the matching are verified by a localization tool, which uses an interpretation tree search combined by a shape from angle method and a constrained alignment technique. The article shows results with real greyscale images.

A novel optical proximity sensor system, HexEYE, capable of measuring the distance to, the orientation of, and the curvature at a local area of object surface has been designed and evaluated for robotic application. This paper presents: 1) the implementation of distance mapping from raw data based on a multilayer backpropagation neural network; 2) the hardware and software implementation of a single sensing unit; and 3) the experimental evaluation under various surface conditions. A prototype of a single sensing unit has been built with commercially available parts.

A specific task of distributed and parallel Information systems is workflow management. In particular, workflow management systems execute business processes that run on top of distributed and parallel Information systems. Parallelism is due to performance requirements and involves data and applications that are spread across a heterogeneous, distributedcomputing environment. Heterogeneity and distribution of the underlying computing infrastructure should be made transparent in order to alleviate programming and use. We introduce an implementation architecture for workflow management systems that meets best these requirements. Scalability (through transparent parallelism) and transparency with respect to distribution and heterogeneity are the major characteristics of this architecture. A generic client/server class library in an object-oriented environment demonstrates the feasibility of the approach taken.

Middleware products have emerged to provide interoperability for client/server system components via 'gateways,' which map the APIs, data manipulation languages and database wire protocols of these components. The ease-of-use and performance characteristics of the middleware model have also begun to change, as well as its role. Middleware is being used for applications outside of its traditional regime of query-only, decision support. Customer requirements are extending its use into new areas of enterprise computing. These, and other middleware trends are discussed.

As credible sensing and actuation is an essential pre-requisite for advanced control, validation of the sensor and actuator interface is necessary.
