With a world wild increase in electricity demand, smart grids emerged as a solution for various problems within the current electrical grid. Some novel aspects about smart grids are the use renewable energy sources, energy storage and also allowing the user to take some decisions to control energy use. Microgrids are building blocks of smart grids and given that academic campuses are very good contributors to energy consumption, their energy consumption can be efficiently controlled by using an energy management system. This paper focuses on the importance of smart campuses with an emphasis on the importance of an energy management system.

Hybrid Mobile Cloud computing (HMCC) refers to a Mobile Computation Outsourcing (MCO) model that exploits hybrid granular cloud-based resources composed of coarse-, medium-, and fine-grained resources interconnected by wireless and wired networks to augment mobile devices. Leveraging single type of granules for augmentation (i.e., vertically heterogeneous) has its own deficiencies of low proximity or/and scalability that leads to communication or/and computation latency. Therefore, responsiveness and energy efficiency of cloud-connected Compute-intensive Mobile Applications (CiMA) are degraded. In this paper, we aim to enhance energy-time efficiency of executing CiMA using HMCC. Performance evaluation results show significant gains, 80%-96% round-trip time and 83%-96% energy saving when executing CiMA using HMCC.

Mobile virtualization, emerging fairly recently, is considered to be a valuable way to mitigate security risks on Android devices. In this paper, we propose a lightweight Android virtualization solution based on container technology, named Condroid. Condroid includes resource isolation based on namespace feature and resource control based on cgroups feature. By leveraging them, Condroid can host several independent Android virtual machines. Our approach requires only a single kernel to support several Android containers. Therefore, we can get a higher performance compared to other virtualization solutions. Furthermore, our implementation presents system service sharing mechanism to reduce memory utilization and file system sharing mechanism to reduce storage usage. The evaluation results on Google Nexus 5 demonstrate that Condroid is feasible in terms of runtime, hardware resource overhead, and compatibility.

The tutorial will begin with an explanation of the concepts behind cloud computing systems, cloud software architecture, the need for mobile cloud computing as an aspect of the app industry to deal with new mobile app design, network apps, app designing tools, and the motivation for migrating apps to cloud computing systems. The tutorial will review facts, goals and common architectures of mobile cloud computing systems, as well as introduce general mobile cloud services for app developers and marketers. This tutorial will highlight some of the major challenges and costs, and the role of mobile cloud computing architecture in the field of app design, as well as how the app-design industry has an opportunity to migrate to cloud computing systems with low investment. The tutorial will review privacy and security issues. It will describe major mobile cloud vendor services to illustrate how mobile cloud vendors can improve mobile app businesses. We will consider major cloud vendors, such as Microsoft Windows Azure, Amazon AWS and Google Cloud Platform. Finally, the tutorial will survey some of the cuttingedge practices in the field, and present some opportunities for future development.

People spend a third of the lifetime on sleep. exercise and light exposing have critical influence on sleep quality. exercise affects sleep efficiency, and the light exposing affect sleep circadian rhythm. This paper investigates the impact of sleep rhythm and efficiency with a HTML5-based behavior recording and analytic service -- Healthy Sleep Space (HSS). HSS takes advantages of important features from HTML5, such as consistent user experience across multiple mobile device, offline processing etc. With HSS, users can record their sleep and behavioral information, then analyze collected information in the cloud, regardless of internet condition or type of mobile devices. We propose a simple Sleep Quotient (SQ) index to evaluate the quality of sleep. Based on the SQ values, HSS provides appropriate exercise and light exposure prescriptions to modify user's daytime behavior, and eventually to improve sleep quality.

Three practical meteorological applications with different characteristics are used to highlight the usability of a computer science workflow middleware called ASKALON by allowing easy access to distributed computing for atmospheric scientists. Utilizing Cloud and grid computing, this paper shows use case scenarios fitting a wide range of applications from operational to research studies with real world examples from meteorological research. The paper concludes that distributed computing is easily usable for meteorological problems using ASKALON. This powerful tool allows simple and cost effective access to computing capacity from grid and Cloud environments.

The recent advance in mobile network technologies (3G/4G) provides an efficient mobile network infrastructure supporting mobile users to access large volumes of mobile data. Now, many mobile applications are developed based on mobile databases on devices and conventional databases. Due to the limitations of mobile devices, using mobile databases on mobile devices encounters certain scalability issues in mobile data accesses and storage. One alternative approach is to use cloud-based databases to support mobile users and applications on mobile devices. This also runs into the several challenges, such as mobility support, localization, energy consumption, and performance concerns. This paper presents a mobile enabled cloud database solution, called MCloudDB, to address the related issues and needs. MCloudDB provides a mobile enabled cloud database infrastructure with a framework, which can be used as a bridge to connect and integrate mobile applications with back-end cloud databases to support mobile cloud data management and access services. The paper presents the design of this framework and the related key solutions for essential features in mobile cloud databases, such as multi-tenancy, elasticity, seamless connectivity and disaster recovery. A simple application example and related experiment results are reported.

Mobile Cloud computing has shown its capability to support mobile devices for provisioning computing, storage and communication resources. Many existing research has proposed to offload computation tasks from mobile devices to clouds in order to reduce energy consumption, where the offloading service model is usually one-to-one. Due to the development of mobile sensing and location-based mobile cloud services, the cloud edge has been extended to the mobile devices and sensors. As a result, the one-to-one model is not sufficient to model the dynamic changes of mobile cloud-based services. Thus, a many-to-many (or multi-site) mobile cloud service composition is highly desired. In this research, MoSeC is presented to model the many-to-many mobile cloud service composition, where there are multiple surrogates, such as cloud computing nodes, mobile devices, or sensors, and their services (i.e., computation, storage, sensing, etc.) can be composed to fulfill functions required by a mobile service requestor. MoSeC takes into considerations the surrogates' changes due to their mobility and resource constraints. Moreover, MoSeC takes into considerations several service metrics for service mapping (or allocation) through a mobile cloud service topology reconfiguration process. A set of algorithms are presented to address the Service Topology Reconfiguration Problem (STRP) in several mobile cloud representative application scenarios, i.e., they are modeled as finite horizon scenarios, infinite horizon scenarios, and large state space scenarios to represent ad hoc, long-term, and large-scale mobile cloud service composition scenarios, respectively.

Federating the portability and mobility of mobile devices with the computation capacity on desktop computers have been a widely discussed computation model for the next decade. However, the mobility of the mobile devices also introduces challenges on the federation. This work developed the elastic computation framework to tackle the aforementioned challenge. The elastic computation framework federates the computation resources on wearable devices, mobile devices, nearby computers, and remote computers into a pool of computation resources. each resource in the pool is characterized by its network delay, expected response time, and computation capability. each mobile device is also characterized by its mobility and computation workload requirements. The elastic computation framework assigns computation resources in the pool to meet the workload requirements on mobile devices. The framework consists of resource allocation component, task scheduling algorithm, and task dispatch middleware. In the experiment, we compare the developed scheduling algorithm with other known algorithms by simulation. The results show that the developed scheduling algorithm does not complete the most tasks though, the cost/performance of system resources is the best among all the algorithms. To be specific, the cost-performance of the developed algorithm can be at least two times better than that of compared algorithms.

Avatar is a system that leverages cloud resources to support fast, scalable, reliable, and energy efficient distributed computing over mobile devices. An avatar is a per-user software entity in the cloud that runs apps on behalf of the user's mobile devices. The avatars are instantiated as virtual machines in the cloud that run the same operating system with the mobile devices. In this way, avatars provide resource isolation and execute unmodified app components, which simplifies technology adoption. Avatar apps execute over distributed and synchronized (mobile device, avatar) pairs to achieve a global goal. The three main challenges that must be overcome by the Avatar system are: creating a high-level programming model and a middleware that enable effective execution of distributed applications on a combination of mobile devices and avatars, re-designing the cloud architecture and protocols to support billions of mobile users and mobile apps with very different characteristics from the current cloud workloads, and explore new approaches that balance privacy guarantees with app efficiency/usability. We have built a basic Avatar prototype on Android devices and Android x86 virtual machines. An application that searches for a lost child by analyzing the photos taken by people at a crowded public event runs on top of this prototype.
