Deadline handling is a fundamental part of real-time computing but has been practiced in ad hoc forms for decades. A general framework for systematic deadline handling in real-time distributed computer systems is proposed in this paper. The notions of hard deadlines and hard-real-time program components are discussed along with the advantages of a hard-real-time component based construction approach. To present approaches for implementation of systematic deadline handling in concrete forms, we use the time-triggered message triggered object (TMO) network structuring as the basic design framework in which deadline handling approaches are incorporated. The TMO structuring scheme is a general-style component structuring scheme and supports design of all types of components including hard-real-time objects and non-real-time objects within one general structure. An augmentation of the TMO structure with statistical performance indicators is also proposed. © 2000 ieee.

A crucial aspect in the design of (embedded real-time) operating systems concerns interrupt handling. This paper presents the concept of a modularized interrupt-handling subsystem that enables the synchronization of interrupt-driven, non-sequential code without the need to disabling hardware interrupts. The basic idea is to use nonblocking/optimistic concurrency sequences for synchronization inside an operating-system kernel. Originally designed for the PURE embedded operating system, the presented object-oriented implementation is highly portable not only regarding the CPU but also operating systems and yet efficient. © 2000 ieee.

Recent work in opening up distributed object systems to make them suitable for applications needing quality of service control has had the side effect of increasing the complexity in setting up, configuring, and initializing such applications. Configuration of distributed applications is more complicated than that of non-distributed applications, simply because of the heterogeneous and distributed nature of the application's components. CORBA and other distributed object middleware simplifies the configuration of distributed object applications, but hides much of the information and control necessary to achieve quality of service (QoS). We describe the techniques and tools that we have developed within our Quality objects (QuO) framework for simplifying the configuration of distributed applications with QoS attributes. We describe a QuO configuration language, as well as the specific configuration needs of particular QoS properties-real-time, security, and dependability-and the support we provide for them. © 2000 ieee.

As the demands for real time distributed systems increase, the need for programming tools useful in development of such application systems is becoming increasingly acute. An issue that the research community has long recognized as an important technological challenge but has not shown much progress in meeting the challenge is to guarantee response times of real time distributed systems. Two basic problems must be solved to effectively meet this challenge: (1) to establish the distributed real time program structure and the system infrastructure structure, i.e., the structure of the operating system (OS) and the communication infrastructure, that enable systematic analysis of the worst case time behavior of the application systems;and (2) to establish a tool which performs automated analysis of the worst case time behavior while leaving only minimal work to the designers. The problem area (1) has been recognized as a research area for a long time, but only in recent years has the skeleton of a usable technical foundation started emerging. In other words, there has long been a lack of fully general and yet easily analyzable distributed real time program structures and also a lack of useful OS timing models. However, on the basis of the skeleton emerged, rapid progress is expected in the future toward establishment of a full technical foundation. Therefore, the time seems ripe for launching new larger scale attacks on problem (2) on the basis of those recent developments in handling problem (1). © 2000 ieee.

Presents an approach towards the automatic synthesis of implementations from real-time object-oriented design models. From an application design model that addresses the functional requirements of the system, and given end-to-end timing requirements, our synthesis approach generates a feasible implementation model, i.e. one that will meet the timing requirements. The synthesis process is supported by automatic code generation that can take the application design model and the synthesized implementation model, and can generate code for the target platform. The synthesis of an implementation model is facilitated through the use of a generic (application-independent) implementation architecture, thereby reducing the synthesis problem to selecting a mapping of the application design model to the artifacts of the implementation architecture. In this paper, we use a multi-threaded event handling architecture with fixed event priorities. The synthesis problem then consists of determining priorities for events and mapping events to threads. We show how, given such a mapping, the response times can be analyzed, and then how, using the analysis, a feasible implementation model can be automatically synthesized. © 2000 ieee.

Today's virtual environments are expected to be distributed to allow collaboration for common purposes. However, they must ensure a high level of quality of service (QoS) to the user, especially in an open context with unknown, a priori, man-in-the-loop event occurrence. This paper presents our distributed Virtual Environment COllaboration Model (DVECOM) and its implementation which aims to provide an end-user QoS support for distributed virtual reality applications. The idea of DVECOM is to guarantee full consistency and soft synchronization of the virtual world distributed displays, with the least rendering degradation possible, and also to auto-adapt the rendering in accordance with the retained strategy, ensuring best effort and least suffering for virtual world rendering. This representation degradation is driven by the users' choices. The receiver-side protocol is based upon the end-user preferences, physical level capability information, as well as the pertinence of the notification to each client (contextual end-user information). When available, such guarantees would make it possible to use DVE out of a closed, oversized, very restricted context for industrial collaborative applications with an expected QoS. © 2000 ieee.

The paper describes benchmarking for evolvable and adaptable real time command and control systems. MITRE's Evolvable real-time C3 initiative developed an approach that would enable current real time systems to evolve into the systems of the future. We designed and implemented an infrastructure and data manager so that various applications could be hosted on the infrastructure. Then we completed a follow-on effort to design flexible adaptable distributed object management systems for command and control (C2) systems. Such an adaptable system would switch scheduling algorithms, policies, and protocols depending on the need and the environment. Both initiatives were carried out for the United States Air Force. One of the key contributions of the work is the investigation of real time features for distributed object management systems. Partly as a result of our work we are now seeing various real time distributed object management products being developed. In selecting a real time distributed object management systems, we need to analyze various criteria. Therefore, we need benchmarking studies for real time distributed object management systems. Although benchmarking systems such as Hartstone and distributed Hartstone have been developed for middleware systems, these systems are not developed specifically for distributed object based middleware. Since much of our work is heavily based on distributed objects, we developed benchmarking systems by adapting the Hartstone system. Large distributed systems may contain millions of objects that have to be managed. This makes it impossible to specify management policies for individual objects. Instead it is necessary to specify policy for groups of objects. This paper describes a framework for the construction of the ADlets distributed Migration Mechanism (ADDMM), which is used by the Adlet System for the management of adlets. The Adlet System is a new approach for multimedia information retrieval and fusion based on the concept of active document advertising, whereby an adlet (the metadata of a document) travels in the network to seek out documents of interest to the parent document, and at the same time advertises its parent document to other interested adlets. ADDMM provides the Adlet System with the facility of managing migrating adlets. ADDMM supports location-independent transparency and minimal interface by utilizing the ADDNS naming system that provides a mechanism for transparent naming and locating adlets, which in turn supports ADDMM transparency at the adlet access level. With the ADDMM migration mechanism, various adlet migration protocols can be constructed and deployed. A visual diagram is introduced to specify such protocols for adlets migration, which can also be employed to specify distributed object management policies. © 2000 ieee.

In many application domains, the distributed object computing (DOC) middleware is responsible for dispatching upcalls to one or more application objects when events or requests arrive from clients. Implementing efficient, predictable, and scalable middleware dispatching mechanisms is hard and implementing them for multi-threaded systems is even harder. In particular dispatching mechanisms must be prepared to dispatch upcalls to multiple objects, to handle recursive requests originated from application-provided upcalls, and must often collaborate with the application to control object life-cycle. In our DOC middleware research we have implemented many dispatching mechanisms that repeatedly apply common solutions to solve the challenges outlined above. Moreover, we have discovered that the forces constraining dispatching mechanisms often differ slightly thereby requiring alternative solutions. This paper presents two contributions to the design and implementation of efficient, predictable, scalable and flexible DOC middleware and applications. First, it shows how patterns can be applied to the object-oriented systems to capture key design and performance characteristics of proven dispatching mechanisms. Second it presents a pattern language that describes successful solutions that are appropriate for key dispatching challenges that arise in various real-time DOC middleware and applications. © 2000 ieee.

The aim of this project is to improve the fault-tolerant data communication setup that we proposed previously. From the verification tests for this setup, which integrates two basic schemes, we observed that performance could be very sluggish sometimes, due to time constraints imposed by problematic routing among communicating objects and possible message retransmissions. These constraints, if not relaxed, would restrict the possibility of building useful object-based real-time systems over the Internet. The two schemes in the extant setup are namely (a) consecutive message transmissions to improve the communication reliability, and (b) adaptive buffer management to prevent message losses at the reception side due to buffer overflow. Careful analyses of the previous test data have revealed that inclusion of load balancing would make the setup more responsive. With this motivation in mind, a load-balancing model is proposed in this paper. The different experiments in this project involved both local and remote Internet sites. The preliminary test results indicate that the proposed load balancing scheme can indeed enhance system responsiveness by relaxing time constraints. Therefore, further work and deeper investigations in the same direction are worthwhile. © 2000 ieee.
