The paper presents a novel approach to the automatic identification of objects/classes from a system specification. The methodology is aimed at the development of distributed real time systems (DRTS), especially those conceived for industrial automation applications. UML is used as the modeling language in conjunction with an extended version of traditional DFD (E-DFD), that conveys information on flow type (data or control) and on process complexity and timing constraints. E-DFDs are mapped into a graph and a tool is used to carry out an automatic graph partition, which allows the identification of a set of objects that constitute, from the design and test points of view, the 'best-fitted' architecture. To validate the proposed methodology, a case study is presented and analyzed, comparing two design strategies. © 2000 ieee.

The paper documents progress to date on a research project, the goal of which is wartime event prediction. It describes the operational concept, the data mining environment, and data mining techniques that use Bayesian networks for classification. Key steps in the research plan are as follows: (1) implement machine learning;(2) test the trained networks;and (3) use the technique to support a battlefield commander by predicting enemy attacks. Data for training and testing the technique can be extracted from the object oriented database that supports the Integrated Marine Multi-Agent Command and Control System (IMMACCS). These data were derived from message traffic generated during US Marine Corps exercises. The class structure in the IMMACCS data model is especially well suited to support attack classification. © 2000 ieee.

While recently emerging middleware technologies such as CORBA and DCOM address the complexity of distributed programming, they cannot be directly applied to distributed control system design due to their excessive resource demand and inadequate communication models. We propose a new CORBA design for CAN-based distributed embedded control systems. Our design goal is to minimize its resource need and make it support group communication without losing the IDL (interface definition language) level compliance to the OMG standards. To achieve this, we develop a transport protocol on the CAN and a group communication scheme based on the well-known publisher/subscriber model. The protocol effectively realizes subject-based addressing and supports anonymous publisher/subscriber communication. We also customize the method invocation and message passing protocol, referred to as the general inter-ORB protocol (GIOP), of CORBA so that CORBA method invocations are efficiently serviced on a low-bandwidth network such as the CAN. This customization includes packed data encoding and variable-length integer encoding for compact representation of IDL data types. The new CORBA design clearly demonstrates that it is feasible to use CORBA in developing distributed embedded systems on real-time networks possessing severe resource limitations. © 2000 ieee.

High productivity is required for industrial systems that are to produce large amounts of low-price products. Most industrial systems are sequentially controlled because materials and parts are processed and constructed step by step. A new method of sequential control is needed to increase productivity, and a new technique to schedule the start time of each process is also needed because of frequent adjustment of production lines and their equipment. Intelligent devices such as intelligent sensors and actuators used in the latest industrial systems have embedded high-performance processors and contain software modules. These devices cooperate and control processing robots and production lines. Advanced sequential control is proposed for sequential control systems consisting of distributed software modules. Processing time can be minimized and productivity increased by intelligent scheduling for advanced sequential control, and this paper describes a new method for adjusting the starting times of production processes automatically. This method shortens the time margin and decreases the total processing time. This paper also describes a processing flow diagram that makes it easy to adjust the starting time of each process. The effectiveness of this intelligent scheduling and start-time-adjustment has been demonstrated by using them to optimize the operation of a system for testing disk plates. © 2000 ieee.

Hybrid testbeds are popular for testing distributed software systems, like network protocols and distributed applications, since the beginning of the 2000s. Combining physical and virtual resources for testing these networked computer systems allows to leverage the advantages and mitigate the disadvantages of either one. However, hybrid testbeds introduce novel challenges, e.g. regarding plausibility, heterogeneity, and controllability. To counter these challenges, we introduce the Hybrid Applications Testbed for Fault Injection (Hatebefi) which combines two approaches: On the one hand, Hatebefi aims to increase the plausibility by integrating hybrid testbeds with domain-specific simulators (e.g. for traffic simulation). This integration also addresses the heterogeneity of contemporary distributed applications. On the other hand, our framework allows for efficient creation and execution of complex test scenarios with a high degree of controllability by offering an event-based execution model. To demonstrate the feasibility of our approach, we implemented a basic set of arbitrarily combinable events to cover the most common scenarios. Both features combined pave the way to test distributed software systems, like Internet of Things applications involving connected vehicles or smart cities.

This paper presents an approach for modeling simulating and analyzing multi clocks real time systems during the different steps of a design. These steps range from the first requirements to a model allocated on a specific execution platform. The UML MARTE profile and the CCSL language are used together to specify the causal and temporal characteristics of the software as well as the hardware parts of the system. The time Square environment allows a simulation of such specification and the detection of potential errors and deadlocks. When the specification refinement is finished, to prove the specification correctness, the CCSL specification is used to generate a synchronous model and some observers in Esterel. We illustrate the approach through a spark ignition control system. © 2011 ieee.

Continuous monitoring of a computer network performance is probably the only solution which allows prompt identification of anomalous functioning conditions and knowledge of parameters on which to base speedy, effective recovery interventions. A number of tools for performance management already exist, but their effectiveness is limited as they are essentially inserted inside owner network management solutions. In the paper we describe the realization of PMt, a platform for the development of performance management applications for the control and real-time management of a heterogeneous computer network. PMt imposes an object-oriented view of the distributed system, defines a performance management design methodology which adapts well to really distributed system management and provides the user with a set of tools and services to assist him both in the design of new performance management applications and in actual management of the whole system.

The paper describes benchmarking for evolvable and adaptable real time command and control systems. MITRE's Evolvable real-time C3 initiative developed an approach that would enable current real time systems to evolve into the systems of the future. We designed and implemented an infrastructure and data manager so that various applications could be hosted on the infrastructure. Then we completed a follow-on effort to design flexible adaptable distributed object management systems for command and control (C2) systems. Such an adaptable system would switch scheduling algorithms, policies, and protocols depending on the need and the environment. Both initiatives were carried out for the United States Air Force. One of the key contributions of the work is the investigation of real time features for distributed object management systems. Partly as a result of our work we are now seeing various real time distributed object management products being developed. In selecting a real time distributed object management systems, we need to analyze various criteria. Therefore, we need benchmarking studies for real time distributed object management systems. Although benchmarking systems such as Hartstone and distributed Hartstone have been developed for middleware systems, these systems are not developed specifically for distributed object based middleware. Since much of our work is heavily based on distributed objects, we developed benchmarking systems by adapting the Hartstone system. The paper describes our efforts in developing benchmarks.
