The concept of software cohesion in both the procedural and object-oriented paradigm is well known and documented. What is not so well known or documented is the perception of what empirically constitutes a cohesive 'unit' by software engineers. In this paper, we describe an empirical investigation using object-oriented (OO) classes as a basis. Twenty-four subjects (drawn from IT experienced and IT inexperienced groups) were asked to rate ten classes sampled from two industrial systems in terms of their overall cohesiveness;a class environment was used to carry out the study. Four key results were observed. Firstly, class size (when expressed in terms of number of methods) did not tend to influence the perception of cohesion by any subjects. Secondly, well-commented classes were rated most highly amongst both IT experienced and inexperienced subjects. Thirdly, the empirical study suggests that cohesion comprises a combination of various class factors including low coupling, small numbers of attributes and well-commented methods, rather than any single, individual class feature per se. Finally, the research supports the view that cohesion is a subjective concept reflecting a cognitive combination of class features;as such it is a surrogate for class comprehension.

Smart Contracts are computer programs which implement and execute transactions and manage business logic on a decentralized public ledger. Smart Contracts can be written in different programming languages and for different Blockchains. Currently the most used language for Smart Contracts is Solidity and the most used platform is the Ethereum Blockchain. Assessing the quality of Smart Contract programs is an important task required to professional programmers, especially when a programming language has so powerful economic implications. It is therefore crucial to provide professional programmers with tools for the evaluation of Smart Contracts. In software engineering, software metrics has been defined and used to measure software quality and, more in general, to qualify software under the principle "You Can't Manage What You Don't Measure". For the Solidity programming language there are only a few Standalone Applications to analyse the Smart Contract metrics. The aim of this paper is first to build a tool for the practical computation of a specific set of Solidity source code metrics, so that the set will be extensible in the future according also to Solidity compiler evolution, second to fully enable a web based usage of the tool to access the metrics of the Solidity programming language. The tool, PASO, differently from the existing application, is able to give software metrics values for Smart Contracts written in Solidity programming language just using a web browser.

In this paper we present an approach and a tool for uncertainty quantification based on Polynomial Chaos Theory. The main goal is to enable the execution of the uncertainty analysis without modifying the original model formulation. While in the past this was achieved by means of non-intrusive approaches, here a new solution based on operator overloading is proposed. As result, different types of analysis for different parameter sets can be performed using the same code formulation. The validity of the tool is demonstrated performing sensitivity analysis on a multi-energy system.

Weiser's algorithm for computing interprocedural slices has a serious drawback: it generates spurious criteria which are not feasible in the control flow of the program. When these extraneous criteria are used the slice becomes imprecise in that it has statements that are not relevant to the computation. Horwitz, Reps and Binkley solved this problem by devising the System Dependence Graph with an associated algorithm that produced more precise interprocedural slices. We take a "step backward" and show how to generate exactly the interprocedural slicing criteria needed, using the program's call graph or a stack. This technique can also be used on a family of program dependence graphs that represent all procedures in a program and are not interconnected by a system dependence graph. Then we show how to use the Horwitz, Reps and Binkley interprocedural slicing algorithm to generate criteria and show that the criteria so generated are equal to those generated by the call-graph/stack technique. Thus we present alternative, equivalent ways to generate precise slicing criteria across procedure boundaries. And finally we show that under certain circumstances, Weiser's technique for slicing across procedures is a bit "too strong, " for it always generates sufficient criteria to obtain the entire program as a slice on any criteria.

Being able to ask questions about the provenance of sonic data requires documentation on each influence on that data's existence and content. Much software exists, and is being developed, for which there is no provenance-awareness, i.e. at best, the data it outputs can be connected to its inputs, but with no record of intermediate processing. Further, where sonic record of processing does exist, e.g. as logs, it is not in a form easily connected with that of other processes. We would like to enable compiled software to record useful documentation without requiring prior manual adaptation. In this paper, we present an approach to adapting source code from its original form without manual manipulation, to record information on data provenance during execution.

In this paper we propose the quantitative analysis of the complexity of a simple reference game implemented on a particular gaming platform as means for characterizing how the platform succeeds in easing the development of networked multiplayer games. We first present our own open source tool based on Sneed's Object-Point (OP) method for the automatic quantitative assessment of the complexity of a software API by analyzing a source code using the API. We then apply our tool, together with the recently released JSComplexity tool based on classical software complexity metrics, to compare two platforms for networked multiplayer games, the open source realXtend Tundra SDK and the proprietary Union. As the reference games we use existing implementations of the simple Pong game atop the two platforms. Our data shows that these complexity metrics reveal API design tradeoffs, resulting in complexity differences in the reference games.

Leafmap is a Python package for interactive mapping and geospatial analysis with minimal coding in a Jupyter environment. It is built upon several open-source packages, such as ipyleaflet and *** (for creating interactive maps), WhiteboxTools (for analyzing geospatial data), and ipywidgets (for designing interactive graphical user interface). Leafmap provides many convenient functions for loading and visualizing geospatial data with only one line of code. Users can also use the interactive user interface to load geospatial data without coding. Anyone with a web browser and Internet connection can use leafmap to perform geospatial analysis and data visualization in the cloud with minimal coding. This workshop will introduce the key features of leafmap for interactive mapping and geospatial analysis in a Jupyter environment. Attendees will learn how to leverage open-source Python packages and free cloud computing platforms for geospatial analysis and data visualization. © 2021 Owner/Author.
