An oracle is used in software testing to derive the verdict (pass/fail) for a test case. Lack of precise test oracles is one of the major problems in software testing which can hinder judgements about quality. Metamorphic testing is an emerging technique which solves both the oracle problem and the test case generation problem by testing special forms of software requirements known as metamorphic requirements. However, manually deriving the metamorphic requirements for a given program requires a high level of domain expertise, is labor intensive and error prone. As an alternative, we consider the problem of automatic detection of metamorphic requirements using machine learning (ML). For this problem we can apply graph kernels and support vector machines (SVM). A significant problem for any ML approach is to obtain a large labeled training set of data (in this case programs) that generalises well. The main contribution of this paper is a general method to generate large volumes of synthetic training data which can improve ML assisted detection of metamorphic requirements. For training data synthesis we adopt mutation testing techniques. This research is the first to explore the area of data augmentation techniques for ML-based analysis of software code. We also have the goal to enhance black-box testing using white-box methodologies. Our results show that the mutants incorporated into the source code corpus not only efficiently scale the dataset size, but they can also improve the accuracy of classification models.

The creation of animations was made as a subject of university programming course in order to make students understand the process of program creation, and tackle programming with interest. However programs created by students had many problems. In this paper, the formats and composition of the programs were investigated. It was clarified by the analysis of source codes that there were a lot of problems related to such matters as how to use indentation, how to apply comments and functions etc. in the programming for the format and the composition of the source codes.

App stores are not merely disrupting traditional software deployment practice, but also offer considerable potential benefit to scientific research. Software engineering researchers have never had available, a more rich, wide and varied source of information about software products. There is some source code availability, supporting scientific investigation as it does with more traditional open source systems. However, what is important and different about app stores, is the other data available. Researchers can access user perceptions, expressed in rating and review data. Information is also available on app popularity (typically expressed as the number or rank of downloads). For more traditional applications, this data would simply be too commercially sensitive for public release. Pricing information is also partially available, though at the time of writing, this is sadly submerging beneath a more opaque layer of in-app purchasing. This talk will review research trends in the nascent field of App Store analysis, presenting results from the UCL app analysis Group (UCLappA) and others, and will give some directions for future work. © 2015 ACM.

This paper uses a projection theory of slicing to formalize the definition of executable dynamic and forward program slicing. Previous definitions, when given, have been operational, and previous descriptions have been algorithmic. The projection framework is used to provide a declarative formulation in terms of the different equivalences preserved by the different forms of slicing. The analysis of dynamic slicing reveals that the slicing criterion introduced by Korel and Laski contains three inter-woven criteria. It is shown how these three conceptually distinct criteria can be disentangled to reveal two new criteria. The analysis of dynamic slicing also reveals that the subsumes relationship between static and dynamic slicing is more intricate that previous authors have claimed. Finally, the paper uses the projection theory to investigate theoretical properties of forward slicing. This is achieved by first re-formulating forward slicing to provide an executable forward slice. This definition allows for formal investigation of the relationship between forward and backward slicing.

Mastery of the subtleties of object-oriented programming languages is undoubtedly challenging to achieve. Design patterns have been proposed some decades ago in order to support software engineers in overcoming recurring challenges in the design of object-oriented software systems. However, given that dozens if not hundreds of patterns have emerged so far, it can be assumed that their mastery has become a serious challenge in its own right. In this paper, we describe a proof of concept implementation of a recommendation system that aims to detect opportunities for the Strategy design pattern that developers have missed so far. For this purpose, we have formalized natural language pattern guidelines from the literature and quantified them for static code analysis with data mined from a significant collection of open source systems. Moreover, we present the results from analyzing 25 different open source systems with this prototype as it discovered more than 200 candidates for implementing the Strategy pattern and the encouraging results of a preliminary evaluation with experienced developers. Finally, we sketch how we are currently extending this work to other patterns. © 2017 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

Building application specific systems-on-chip requires several coordinated steps. A hardware configuration must be specified, the corresponding system must be synthesized and finally, the software part of the application must be implemented. Traditionally, development was executed in exactly this order. Specifying the hardware configuration can be a time consuming task, since it is often executed with the help of graphical tools. Experienced users can reverse the process, by first writing the software and then inferring the required hardware components of the system. In this contribution, we present a tool that enables this style of working. We evaluate the functionality of our tool with the help of several existing examples and we evaluate the gain in productivity by comparing the time required for the generation of two different systems. We show that our tool is successful for all examples and that it requires considerable less time. © VDE VERLAG GMBH · Berlin · Offenbach

To build high-reliability software in software development, software review is essential. Typically, software review requires documents from multiple phases such as requirements specification, design document and source code to reveal the inconsistencies among them and to ensure the traceability of deliverables. However, most previous studies on software review (reading) techniques focus on finding defects in a single document in their experiments. In this paper, we propose a multi-document review evaluation system, DRESREM 2. This system records reviewers' eye movements and mouse/keyboard operations for analysis. We conducted eye gaze analysis of reviewers in design document review with multiple documents (including requirements specification, design document, etc.) to confirm the usefulness of the system. For the performance analysis, we recorded defect detection ratio, detection time per defect, and fixation ratio of eye movements on each document. As a result, reviewers who concentrated their eye movements on requirements specification found more defects in the design document. We believe this result is good evidence to encourage developers to read high-level documents when reviewing low-level documents. © 2008 ieee.
