The Internet of Things, like many future wireless sensor networks, is expected to follow a software defined paradigm, where protocol parameters and behaviors will be dynamically tuned as a function of the signal statistics. New protocols will be then injected as a software when certain events occur. For instance, new data compressors could be (re) programmed on-the-fly as the monitored signal type or its statistical properties change. In this paper, a lossy compression scenario is considered, where the application tolerates some distortion of the gathered signal in return for improved energy efficiency. To reap the full benefits of this paradigm, an automatic sensor profiling approach is discussed, where the signal class, and in particular the corresponding rate-distortion curve, is automatically assessed using machine learning tools (namely, support vector machines and neural networks). This curve can be reliably estimated on-the-fly through the computation of a small number (from ten to twenty) of statistical features on time windows of a few hundreds samples.

The shape of the long line array is required to correct signal processing data and locate underwater targets precisely. In this paper, the warping transform form with waveguide invariant (β) is adopted to extract the single normal mode (3rd and 4th) through the compression processing broadband sound source signal of the vertical line array, which is based on underwater acoustic propagation sea trial data conducted in shallow waters of the South China Sea in November 2017. This method verifies the relationship between the single normal mode phase for the vertical line array sound field and shape. The results are consistent with the vertical line array attitude sensor measurement method. © 2021 ieee.

This paper reviews a set of standardized communication technologies, ieee 802.15.4 and 6LoWPAN for Ambient Assisted Living (AAL). These technologies form a well suited communication stack for applications in this field, enabling body near communication and communication for housing. A sensor/actor network using these standards was implemented on a hardware platform based on the TI CC2430 chip at the wireless lab at the HTW-Berlin (University of Applied Sciences). It is currently coupled with sensors and signal processing for monitoring vital parameters. Results of these developments will support the research in AAL as well as teaching in a new master degree course as an interdisciplinary project between two Berlin Universities (Alice Salomon Hochschule and HTW Berlin) in order to create the next generation products for Ambient Assisted Living (AAL).

Optical communication through light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and video cameras is rapidly gaining attention due to the increasing pervassiveness of those devices, and because of its potential data capacity. However, the communication quality is greatly compromised by the low resolution of the imaging sensor which produces blurred images of the LEDs at long distances. On the other hand, the images recorded at high frame rates possess particular features that can be used to improve the reception. This paper suggests image processing techniques to detect and decode the optical signals of an array of LEDs. For the case of blurred images, detection of the LED's is reinforced by a k-means clustering algorithm based on distance measurements derived from the linear correlation among pixel intensities along the time dimension. Experiments with a prototype show that the proposed algorithms can improve the bit error rate (BER) of the decoded signal. Furthermore, partial implementation on a General Purpose Graphics processing Unit (GPGPU) is also addressed, and processing times are demonstrated.

Multi-group multicast beamforming in wireless systems with large antenna arrays and massive audience is investigated in this paper. Multicast beamforming design is a well-known non-convex quadratically constrained quadratic programming (QCQP) problem. A recent attempt is to apply convex-concave procedure (CCP) to find a stationary solution, whose complexity, however, increases dramatically as the problem size increases. In this paper, we propose a low-complexity high-performance algorithm for multi-group multicast beamforming design in large-scale wireless systems by utilizing the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) together with CCP. In specific, the original non-convex QCQP problem is first approximated by a sequence of convex subproblems via CCP. Each convex subproblem is then reformulated as a novel ADMM form. Our ADMM reformulation enables that each updating step is performed by solving multiple small-size subproblems with closed-form solutions in parallel. Numerical results show that our fast algorithm maintains the same favorable performance as state-of-the-art algorithms but reduces the complexity by orders of magnitude.

An advanced interference plus noise covariance matrix (ICM) reconstruction approach was proposed to facilitate robust adaptive beamforming for antenna sensor arrays The proposed method involves the calculation of the eigenvectors and eigenvalues of the signal of interest (SOI) and the interference through eigen-projection processing. Following this, the covariance matrix without the required signal component is formed by amending the diagonal matrix of the eigenvalue Then, the mixed ICM is constructed using the shrinkage method. A quadratically constrained quadratic programming (QCQP) dilemma can be worked out to ascertain the difference between the proposed steering vector (SV) and the true vector. The benefit of the proposed method is that the ICM can be obtained on the move and also can be obtained more precisely in the situation of high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Finally, the results of the theoretical analysis and simulation demonstrate the robustness and efficacy of the proposed method. © 2023 ieee.

In this work, implementation of a system-on-chip in a Field Programmable Gate array (FPGA) is described. This system analyzes temporal phase-shift in a pattern of interference fringes, in order to measure displacements in real-time. The interferograms images are introduced to the FPGA through a Charge Coupled Device (CCD). A pipeline architecture is used to the stages of phase analysis and display of the results. The system consumes just 2030 slices of an XC2V3000 and it runs at 65 MHz clock frequency.

The computational load is prohibitive in 3D sonar systems for real-time image generation. In the literature, an efficient frequency beamforming method based on the distributed and parallel subarray (DPS) has been introduced for planar arrays working in the far field. This paper extends the DPS beamforming algorithm to process the signals acquired from a scene in the near field. The alogrithm divides the full populated transducer array into two stage distributed subarrays. It performs parallel beamforming on the first-stage subarrays and applies the approximation for time delays in the near-field beam patterns of the second-stage subarray. The computational efficiency is significantly improved as compared with the traditional methods, while achieving the similar resolutions. In addition, a multi-FPGA signal processor is proposed for implementing the underwater 3-D imaging.

Millimeter wave (mmWave) communication with advanced lens antenna arrays is a promising technology for achieving cost-effective 5G wireless systems. This paper studies a multi-user mmWave single-sided lens multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system in the uplink communication, where the base station (BS) is equipped with a full-dimensional (FD) lens antenna array with both elevation and azimuth angle resolution capabilities, and each mobile station (MS) has the conventional uniform planar array (UPA). With limited radio frequency (RF) chains at the BS and one single RF chain at each MS, we propose a low-complexity path division multiple access (PDMA) scheme to enable virtually interference-free multi-user communications, by exploiting the angle-dependent energy focusing property of the lens antenna array at the BS as well as the multi-path sparsity of mmWave channels. Besides, a new technique called path delay compensation is proposed at the BS to effectively transform the frequency-selective MIMO channel to parallel frequency-flat small-size MIMO channels, for each of which the low-complexity single-carrier (SC) transmission can be applied. Numerical results show significant sum-rate gain with the proposed design over benchmark systems.
